Cory FinnellChief Information OfficerBig Fish Games

Cory Finnell joined Big Fish Games in 2005 and is responsible for the company's marketing, product, data warehouse and analytics teams.    Prior to joining Big Fish Games, Cory co-founded Certus Consulting Group, a provider of electronic evidence discovery services to law firms and corporations involved in large-scale litigation. He also served as the director of analytic services for N2H2, a leading provider of Internet filtering software, now a part of Secure Computing.

Cory holds a B.S. degree in quantitative economics and decision sciences from the University of California, San Diego, an M.B.A. from the University of Washington, and a Master   of Science degree in applied economics from the University of Montana.

One Company’s Journey to Big Data

The game industry generates an enormous volume of data.  But what do companies in the industry do with it and why?   Come learn about Big Fish Games’ journey from leveraging “sizable” e-commerce data to mining “big” game telemetry data.   Listen to Cory Finnell, the CIO of Big Fish Games - a leading producer and distributor of mobile free to play casual games – discuss what the company has learned from and how the company approaches investments in analytic people and infrastructure.   What works, what doesn’t and why.

Jesse BridgewaterPrincipal Data ScientisteBay

Jesse Bridgewater leads a data science team at eBay focused on combining machine learning, data mining and user-centric design to improve traditional product development methods.

Some current areas of research include advanced live-traffic experimentation methods based on multi-armed bandits and scalable user-centric design methods. His background is physics and distributed algorithms.

Since completing his Ph.D in Electrical Engineering at UCLA he has done predictive modeling and user-centric data mining at the JD Power Econometric Sciences group, Yahoo Search and Microsoft's Bing search engine.

The R + Hadoop Hookup

Hadoop and R have each democratized important parts of the data analysis  universe.  They are both popular and useful tools for data-driven business   and academic research. Putting the two together is a cottage industry with several different approaches. All of the approaches to date put R at the   center of the process by enabling the creation of map-reduce jobs using R   code.   This is great for a lot of purposes but has real downsides as well.  We present an approach to bringing these two technologies together to   enable hadoop jobs to leverage R when it is useful and without   compromising on robustness, debugability and flexibility.

Lynn GoldsteinChief Data OfficerNYU

Lynn A. Goldstein is the Chief Data Officer for New York University’s Center for Urban Science + Progress, a position she has held since August 2013.

Prior to joining CUSP, she was the Privacy General Counsel/Chief Privacy Officer for JPMorgan Chase from 2004 through May 2013 and for Bank One from 2003 to 2004. From 2001 to 2004, she was the General Counsel for Bank One’s credit card company, and from 1988 to 2001 she was Head of Litigation for Bank One, First Chicago NBD and First Chicago.

Governance for Big Data

As the volume and detail of information captured by organizations increases, the need to address the governance necessary to maximum the value of this information increases.   Sound information governance is based on accountability.  This presentation will address the essential elements of accountability in the context of big data and how an organization leveraging big data can implement these elements.

Kurt BrownDirector, Data PlatformsNetflix

Kurt leads the Data Platform team at Netflix. His group architects and manages the technical infrastructure underpinning the company's analytics. The Netflix data infrastructure includes various Big Data technologies (e.g. Hadoop, Hive, and Pig), Netflix open sourced applications and services (e.g. Lipstick and Genie), and traditional BI tools (e.g. Teradata and MicroStrategy).

Cloud Native Hadoop at Netflix

Nearly all of the Netflix technical infrastructure is in the (Amazon) cloud and our Big Data systems are no exception. In this session we'll discuss why we do this and how we make it work exceptionally well for Hadoop. Simply forklifting your Hadoop setup / processes from your data center to the cloud is a recipe for disappointment. By taking a "cloud native" approach (e.g. embracing openness, elasticity, and cloud services), many new, empowering possibilities open up. While all hype around "the cloud" can lead to skepticism, it's our daily reality and a huge business enabler for Netflix.

Richard WendellGlobal Head of Data ScienceTE Connectivity

Constructing and leading TE's global data science and strategic analytics team. Responsible for creating and executing the data and analytics strategies that accelerate the corporate strategy and enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness. The team's focus spans generating analytic insights, creating quantitative strategies and developing external business development and partnership opportunities.

From Insight to Impact: Lessons Learned in Executing the ‘Last Mile’ of Analytics Projects

The thesis of this presentation is that, while many well conducted big data and analytics projects drive insights, the business impact is often left unrealized.   At the end of the day, it is critical for analytics executives to drive execution across the organization.   This presentation outlines best practices for success in maximizing the ROI from data science and analytics.

David StringfellowChief Economist, DataState of Utah

David Stringfellow is the Chief Economist in the Office of the Utah State Auditor.   He focuses on data analytics, accessing billions of records in the State of Utah’s many data systems.   He builds models and analyzes trends to ensure Utah’s public entities are realistic, effective, and efficient.

Before this, David was a Senior Economist in the Utah Governor’s Office.   He forecast Utah’s economy, $5 billion in annual revenue, and was the Governor's principal tax policy adviser.   He was also a Statistician for the U.S. Census Bureau, producing official estimates for service sectors of the US economy totaling roughly $1 trillion.

Public Policy and the Complexity of Analytics

In the last decade, the economy has swung wildly from a housing based boom, to an unprecedented economic recession, followed by a lackluster recovery.   Economists, as a group, largely missed the recession and pace of recovery.   Data science paired with the science of complexity provide an opportunity for economists and all public sector managers to better understand how world works.   Given the complexity of the world, how should our approach to our data, models, methods, and analytics change to best inform public policy?   Large scale data analytics will have a prominent role in creating more useful tools to better guide decision making in government.   This will range from improved forecasts, to more detailed evaluations of program effectiveness, to increased ability to detect fraud, waste, and abuse.   Examples of how the Office of the Utah State Auditor is utilizing big data and advanced analytics to improve how government operates will be presented throughout.

Big Data: What is it Good for?

Big Data is great, but what is it good for?   It is good for data-driven discovery and decision support.   I will discuss the implications of Big Data in these two areas, with emphasis on Decision Science.   I will describe an "as-a-Service" model for Decision Science.  I will describe the why, what, how, and who of DecisionScience-as-a-Service.

Taylor PhilipsManager, Data ScienceSquare

Taylor Phillips manages the data science and machine learning teams at Square, which are responsible for fraud detection and other data monetization strategies such as recommendation systems. Taylor brings a backend, infrastructure lens to the machine learning domain, helping architect a reliable, highly-available, real-time risk pipeline to support the rigorous requirements of the payments industry. Before Square, Taylor spent several years building and commanding an army of online poker bots.

Highly Available Machine Learning Systems to Move Money

Square's flagship innovations, such as frictionless signup/underwriting and next-day settlement, are enabled by powerful machine learning behind scenes. These use cases boil down to moving money in real-time with machine learning; this is why availability and correctness are of highest concern. In this talk, we'll discuss Square's machine learning pipeline, its evolution from startup to enterprise, and some things we learned along the way.  We'll also look towards the future and share some strategies that Square is considering to monetize its rich, line-item data.

Patrick BeattyDirector, AnalyticsTrulia

Data scientist, product manager, financial engineer, tech/maker, and academic with broad experience in all aspects of business, finance, accounting, risk management, and entrepreneurism. Direct experience with start-ups, tech, data science, risk management, financial consulting, and venture capital. Interested in early-stage start-ups and technology.

Specialties: Business plan and strategy, Economic Capital, Portfolio Management, Financial Research, KMV Products, Programming in most statistical and financial scripting languages as well as C, Announcing, Radio Broadcasting

Building a Data Science Team

Trulia has a wealth of big data.   For example, we have records spanning decades for every home in the United States, logged activity of tens of millions of home buyers, tens of millions of property photos, and millions of real estate questions and answers.   Such a wealth of data about the real estate domain has never before existed in one place.   Trulia aims to find out how the home buying experience can be transformed using all this data.   With that in mind, over the past three years we've built up a data science team to do just that--create new products and undiscover actionable insights from our big data.  This talk will detail the decisions we made in assembling the team, and what has worked and not worked over these past years.

Steve HirschChief Data OfficerNYSE Euronext/ICE

In his current role as Chief Data Officer of NYSE Euronext, Steve Hirsch is responsible for the data vertical which includes data governance, data architecture, database development, operations, platform engineering, storage, and dataflow automation. Prior to entering the exchange space at Archipelago (which later merged with the NYSE), Steve served in other data centric roles at various companies, including Nextcard, one of the first online providers of consumer credit, as well as household names Del Monte Foods and the Walt Disney Company. Steve’s passion for technology began early on in life, coding his first database engine and accounting system while he was still in elementary school and co-founding his first software development firm during his high school years.

Empowering the Data Scientist

Today, the analytic needs of most organizations are no longer met by the processes and tools of the data warehouse and data mart models of years and decades past.   Data volumes are growing exponentially… data structures are frequently changing… new data sources are being born every day all over the world, and data reservoirs are being filled, that must be tapped.  Organizations need a model to quickly access all of the data assets of a company and provision them to the analytics platform that is best suited for the analysis at hand. In this session, Steve Hirsch, chief data officer of InterContinentalExchange Group, the parent company of the NYSE, will talk about how his company has empowered their data scientists and eased the burden on IT   through self-service data provisioning, generating significant efficiency gains and cost savings.
