NEveryone has their first- First love, first kiss, first date, and for some first marriage. When these first come along we had nothing to compare them to. We think “WOW! Does it get any better than this?!” Then those other dreaded first come along-first fights, first break-ups, first divorce. After we pick ourselves up from these first and start over we move on to our seconds, but when these seconds come around,when do we stop comparing them to our first?

Letting go of the past is hard to do, I’ll be the first to admit that. The person I dated all through college cheated on me the entire time, even while we were living together. Looking back, I should have dumbed his ass long before we ever called a quits. Sad part was he wasn’t the first one who cheated one me, and it seemed like every relationship I had ever been in ended because the guy thought he found someone better. Once I met the man I love now I was honest with him from the

beginning and I told him that I’m going to have trust issues, and what sucked for him was having to work twice as hard to earn my trust because of what happened in my past. Now we’ve been together for two years and even though some days have been a struggle, I had to let go and stop holding everything my ex’s did to me against my new love. HE’S NOT THE ONE WHO CHEATED! But because of my insecurities I almost let someone better slip away because I thought all men eventually walk away.

Just because it didn’t work out the first time doesn’t mean that it can’t work out with someone else. We can’t let the past be an anchor holding us down, we have to let go of it to truly become who we’re meant to be. People walk out of our lives so better ones can walk in. If you always compare those better ones to the ones who walked out then stop then ask yourself why did they let them walk out in the first place?

Before you start a new relationship, you have to make sure you’re ready emotionally. It’s ok to start casually dating before you’re completely over your previous love, but just casually date. If you’re looking for a full on emotionally committed relationship before you’ve completely let go of your past then you’re only asking for more hurt and heartache. I’ve heard it said that on average for every year that you’re with someone it takes 1-3 months to fully let them go. A good friend of mine once said you know you’re over your past love when you can look at them, or talk about them, and you don’t start talking bad about them. I always questioned that, but now I understand.The reason we talk bad about our past relationships right out of them is because we’re hurt, for whatever reason, and we want everyone to know how horrible they are. We have to put them down to bring ourselves up. You have to know when it’s time to let go of the hurt!

No two relationships are the same, many may have the same outcome (ending), but none take the exact same road to reach that outcome. Some relationships are easier to let go of while others may need additional time. So let go of everything that is holding you back, men you can’t compare your ex’s cooking to your girlfriends cooking, maybe they’re chefs at different cuisines. Ladies, just because your ex was great at picking out the most expensive gift doesn’t mean that your boyfriend can’t give you something less expensive with just as much or more love. In the end, the past is the past, and that relationship ended for a reason. Stop asking yourself what could have been if something was different, and live in the present. It’s time to start developing a better future.

What do you get when you combine eight acres of turf, rib cookers that travel thousands of miles each April, four nights of music, and beautiful Arizona spring weather? These ingredients have resulted in thousands of smiling faces over the last two years for music buffs, BBQ connoisseurs or fans of just hanging out with friends on the most well-known expanse of grass in the West Valley. The third annual Big Red Rib & Music Festival is back on the Great Lawn and there will be no shortage of good times.

Unlike a Cardinals game at University of Phoenix Stadium, no need to pack the car the night before with all your tailgating equipment - the party is already set-up on the Great Lawn for you. The excitement starts on April 25 with the Arizona Cardinals Draft Party. Football fans will be able to keep track of all the first-round draft selections on two big screens on either side of the main stage. Later in the evening after this spring football fix, Arizona’s own Chad Freeman and Redline will take to the stage to perform some familiar country favorites and maybe some cuts off their debut CD “Cowboy Heart.”

Along with the sweet smells coming from the numerous rib cooking locations, country music will continue to fill the air on Friday with an evening concert by Phil Vassar. As a singer/songwriter, Phil has hit the Top 5 seven times with songs like “Carlene,” “Last Day of My Life” and “American Child” and topped the charts with “In A Real Love” and the perennial favorite “Just Another Day in Paradise.” His high-energy performance will also include his new smash hit release, “Love Is Alive.” The Stephanie Eason Band will show the show and ensure the country music vibe is at a fever pitch.

Twelve hours of excitement is in store for those visiting the Great Lawn on Saturday. Four bands will

take the stage throughout the day, featuring the one and only KC & The Sunshine Band at 8:30PM. With sales of over 100 million records and three Grammy Awards, Harry Wayne Casey – KC for short – will take all in attendance on a 40-year music history lesson of his unique fusion of R&B and funk, with a hint of a Latin percussion groove. For those parents bringing their children to the show, just count the number of times they look at you and say, ”Oh, they sing that song too?” Hard-rocking Whiskey’s Quicker, sultry blues powerhouse The Sugar Thieves and the ultimate good time party band The Chris Parker Project provides the music in this festival throughout the day.

On Sunday, the sounds coming from the stage will take on a Hispanic feel with three bands of varying influences. La Llegadora Banda is a 17-member band featuring a cantante with a

deep, rich voice that belts out the Latino classics. The regional music will continue from the Banda mi Lindo Mazatlan throughout the afternoon. National headlining act Intocable will close out the evening with their musical signature that had fused Tejano’s robust conjunto and Norteño folk rhythms with a pop balladry. Intocable walked away with two of the 5 nominations to the Billboard Regional Mexican Awards and got a nod for Best Norteño Album to the 2011 Latin Grammy for their album INTOCABLE 2011.

Some would argue the real stars of this festival never set foot on the main stage. As far east as Virginia and reaching north of Chicago, our eight rib cooking teams make it a priority to travel to the Valley of the Sun each year. Their passion is creating

outstanding ribs and, let’s be

honest, outdoing the team next to them. Each team will sell a small sampler if you wish to try them all or come with an empty stomach to see if you can conquer a full rack yourself. Don’t worry, we will have plenty of wetnaps waiting for you.

There is a something for everyone, as long as that “everyone” is looking for a relaxing, family-friendly atmosphere outside the best stadium in the National Football League. Valley Residents Buzz For Bourbon at Scottsdale Culinary FestivalDA VINCI – THE GENIUS NOW AT ARIZONA SCIENCE CENTER

Da Vinci-The Genius, now at Arizona Science Center, showcases “The Secrets of the Mona Lisa” and the work of French engineer Pascal Cotte. Cotte’s life-long passion for the preservation of the Mona Lisa led him to invent a cutting edge camera, which uses patented technology to virtually peel away layers of varnish. Pascal was granted unprecedented access to the Mona Lisa to photograph the painting “in the nude.” In doing so, Cotte was able to uncover how the Mona Lisa looked as she was originally painted and scientifically recreate 25 secrets about the painting that would otherwise go unseen.

Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will present a reading and book signing by NPR humorist and best-selling author David Sedaris on Thursday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m. at ASU Gammage in Tempe.Sedaris’ appearance coincides with the April 23 release of his newest collection of essays titled Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls.

With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers, known for slicing through cul-tural euphemisms and political correctness.His best-selling books have sold millions of copies in 25 different languag-es.

Sedaris’ collections of essays include Barrel Fever (1994), Holidays on Ice(1997), Naked (1997), Me Talk Pretty One Day (2000), Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim (2004), When You Are Engulfed in Flames (2008), and Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Besti-ary (2010). He was the editor of Children Playing before a Statue of Hercules: An Anthology of Outstanding Stories (2005), and his writings have appeared in The New Yorker. Sedaris and his sister, Amy Sedaris, have collaborated under the

name “The Talent Family” and have written a half dozen plays that have been produced at La Mama, Lincoln Center and The

NPR HUMORIST AND BEST-SELLING AUTHOR DAVID SEDARIS RETURNS TO ASU GAMMAGE

Neil Simon’s poignant comic masterpiece tells the story of Al Lewis (David Green) and Willie Clark (Peter Van Norden) who were a top Vaudeville act for decades. The two, now retired, had great chemistry on stage but couldn’t stand each other off stage. They haven’t spoken since the act broke up eleven years ago.

Willie resides in a drab hotel room where everything is falling apart. He spends every day in his pajamas and bathrobe. Yoon Bae’s set surrounds him with faded memories of his past. His long suffering nephew/agent Ben (Bob Sorenson) visits weekly

bringing milk, low sodium soup and Willie’s lifeline – his copy of Variety – every Wednesday, but no job offers. Would Willie even know what day it was without this weekly visit? The very dapper Al, a retired stockbroker, has moved to the “country”, his daughter’s house in New Jersey where he has his own room.

During this week’s visit Ben brings big news. CBS is doing a comedy retrospective and wants Willie to appear. Of course the catch being, that he reunite with Al to perform one of their classic routines. Can they put aside their total dislike for each other and manage to get through a full rehearsal let alone

the performance? We get a taste of the one-liners and sexual innuendos of old time Vaudeville as they try to run through their “doctor” sketch. Sparks fly and disaster ensues but ultimately the two patch things up and move on with the rest of their lives.

This show about growing old, the importance of family, friendship and respect is both hysterically funny and bittersweet. It is well worth your time. Put a little sunshine in your life before it’s too late.

The food and wines being served include: Bodegas Aragonesas Crucillon paired with/ Field Green Salad with Fresh Grapes, Oranges, Green Apples in Raspberry Vinaigrette. (This wine is smooth and well balanced, its’ freshness and sweet tannins provide a remarkable complexity.)

Bodegas Aragonesas Don Ramon will be paired with Spanish Risotto. (The Don Ramon is a blend of Tempranillo and Grenache grapes. It features complex aromas combining matured fruit with spicy and balsamic hints from its aging and has a long lasting aftertaste.)

Bodegas Aragonesas Mosen Cleto will be paired with sun dried tomato and smoked Gouda meatball. (The Mosen Cleto is made with 75% Grenache and 25% Tempranillo grapes. The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

‘The Company You Keep’Robert Redford plays a wanted man and former member of the revolutionary militant group the Weather Underground who goes on the run after a journalist (Shia LaBeouf) outs him. (R - 125 minutes)

Stan: ‘The Company You Keep’ reminded me of being born and raised in Chicago and that crucial time in my own life between 1960-70 which included college, my being drafted and Vietnam, the various groups of SDS (Students for a Democratic Society), finding myself in the middle of the 1968 Grant Park termed ‘police riot’, and the 1969 deaths of Fred Hampton and Mark Clark of the Black Panther Party. The outstanding performances of veteran actors of my age group deliver a mirrored reflective view

for many of us with first hand experience of the time while Shia LaBeouf as a contemporary seeking ‘the journalist truth’ of the past, director/star Robert Redford presents a very powerful cinematic film… (Grade: A-)

Joseph: Seeing Robert Redford, Julie Christie, Susan Sarandon, Nick Nolte, Chris Cooper, Richard Jenkins, Brendan Gleeson and Sam Elliott - or what is essentially a parade of cinematic legends - walk across the silver screen in “The Company You Keep” is a bewildering blast from the past but at some point it all just seems superficial. The sensation is only amplified by the thriller’s spineless story, which lacks any suspense whatsoever and is quite confusing thanks to the unnecessarily high number of players involved. It does not help matters much that none of these characters are particular worth rooting for. (Grade: D)

‘42’; Chadwick Boseman plays Jackie Robinson who makes history in 1946 when he signs with the Brooklyn Dodgers under the guidance of team executive Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford). (PG-13 - 100 minutes)

Stan: Being born in 1946 and attending Chicago White Sox baseball games (in Chicago living on the South Side we were Sox fans, North-siders were Cubs) around 12 years old, and being a person of color, writer/director Brian Helgeland presents a story that transcends a sports movie. The exceptional performance by Chadwick Boseman as Jackie Robinson and Harrison Ford’s truly remarkable transformation, ‘42’ handles the overtly negative subject matter of the time with a commendable balance of grace, fortitude, and a time-portal view which transcends the inequities of American history. (Grade: B+)

Joseph: Since Jackie Robinson is one of the greatest baseball players of all time, it is only fitting that “42” - a new drama about his world-altering first minor league season - is one of the greatest films about baseball released in recent memory. In a time when movies like “Moneyball” forget to appeal to all audiences and instead cater

‘Starbuck’Patrick Huard plays a perpetual screw up who, having been a habitual sperm donor in his youth, discovers that he is the biological father of 533 children - 142 of whom are trying to force the fertility clinic to reveal the true identity of the prolific donor code-named Starbuck. Playing

solely to sports junkies, writer/director Brian Helgeland’s flick is far-reaching. Anchored by an extraordinary performance by a nearly unrecognizable Harrison Ford, this motion picture possesses the emotional depth necessary to vitalize viewers regardless of their grasp on the game. (Grade: A)

‘Trance’James McAvoy plays a fine art auctioneer who, having teamed up with criminal gang to steal a painting worth millions of dollars, suffers a blow to the head and awakens with no memory of where he has hid it prompting the gang’s leader (Vincent Cassel) to hire a hypnotherapist (Rosario Dawson). (R - 101 minutes)

Stan: Writer/director Danny Boyle, who has carved his own niche in thoroughly engaging suspense story telling, excels in presenting the intricacies of manipulating the human mind both conscientiously and psychologically, while we as viewers subconsciously go over every single clue to arrive at who we think, or more like feel, are the true alliances between the central characters. Emotionally exhausted at the end of the movie, and yes, succumbing to the charm of Rosario Dawson who carries the film, I realized that I was in a

exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R - 109 minutes)

Stan: Expecting the common recent trend of adult themed comedy ‘French language style with English subtitles’ with ‘Hangover’ films overtones, and yes, the start of ‘Starbuck’ for the first third of the film falls right into that theme, the movie slowly morphs into serious overtones addressing biological parenthood, older children living with parents, and the topic of rights of those born of sperm donors. As closing credits roll, writer/director Ken Scott left me with the thought, ‘Coming of age, has no age limit’. (Grade: B)

‘Trance’ for 100 minutes without any control on what I was thinking, and felt the better for it.(Grade: B+)

Joseph: So long as you surrender with complete abandon to “Trance,” it will be a surreal cinematic experience unlike any other you have ever had or probably ever will. However, if you hesitate or resist in even the slightest way, the dream will quickly become a nightmare. One’s enjoyment of writer/director Danny Boyle’s new thriller is dependent on the level of faith they have that the psychotic safari will, before all is said and done, make some sort of sense. Fortunately, it does - and in a spectacularly surprising way no less. This movie is intriguing, intense, innovative and especially insane. (Grade: B)

“The first movie I did for the studio was ‘My Boss’ Daughter’ with Ashton Kutcher. They came to know me and they thought that I would be the perfect one to take over the Scary movie franchise when the Wayans left, so Bob Weinstein called me for Scary 3 and wanted to know if I wanted to do it. They said we’ve got a script, they wanted to do ‘Signs of the Ring’ and I had never heard of it but I said all right, lets see what we’ve got. The script was terrible and unusable and so I started over, I assembled my team of Craig Jensen and Pat Proft, Bob Weiss, Phil Dornfeld. We set about making the movie. (Scary) 3 was great, we revived the franchise, we did (Scary) 4, and so he’s been after me for four years to do this one!

“You nailed it, I’ve always had this ability to see the insane side of the most series situation, especially as transported to us through movies! Its just such ‘BS’, the more seriously the movies take themselves, the better it is for me to jump in and poke holes in it if it’s something that’s inflated. I’ve been doing this since 2nd grade, laughing at the seriousness, and it’s something that I’ve always liked to do.

‘Scary’ movie and why this is an amazing franchise is that it never gets old because there’s not only one character or a group of characters. Every Scary movie is a completely fresh premise as opposed to other franchises like ‘Police Academy’ where they are always training to be police officers. This (Scary movies) is always a combination of new movies, and the characters are many times different. In 3 and 4 we’ve had Cindy Campbell, but every other character was different, and we always sprinkle in regulars like Charlie Sheen, Simon Rex, and that’s why people always share the references because they see these movies, because they see these movies, the bigger these movies are, the better we’ll do!” – David Zucker

The Arizona BBQ Festival has been many things throughout the years—a smoked meat heaven, a liquor lover’s dream, and a huge party. This year, it’s all that plus one insanely wacky idea—the in-augural Arizona Redneck Games. Taking place on Saturday, April 20th, from 11am to 9pm, the 4th Annual Arizona BBQ Festival & Redneck Games is set to be what event founders are calling “the funnest damn Honky Tonk in AZ.” Those event founders, by the way, are none other than the fellas over at EATERAZ.com, who started the BBQ Festival back when it was at the Scottsdale Waterfront. Now at Salt River Fields, the event takes place on a huge grass field with parking for more than 20,000 excited BBQ enthusiasts. With the Redneck Games part of the BBQ action, the crowds could be heavy. Why? We’ve all got an inner hick, don’t we?! Toilet seat horseshoes, watermel-on seed spitting, hub cap hurling, arm wrestling, and lawnmower

obstacle courses are just part of the action. The Arena Stage will feature contests like a Daisy Duke Beauty Pageant, Redneck Tat-too Contest, and Hooters Chicken Wing Eating Contest. KNIX’s Bar-rel Boy will emcee all the hilarity. Typically, this event has ended around 7pm, but this year, that’s

Ever since the folks at Oskar Blues in Lyons Colorado put the first craft beer in to a can, back in 2002, interest in canned craft beer has increased rapidly. Just ten years later, over 100 United States breweries have embraced canning their beers. Some, like Big Sky and New Belgium can beers that are already popular in bottles; while others, like Oskar Blues offer their entire line only in cans. Some canned beers are so popular that it creates an incred-ible demand. When Durango fa-vorite Ska Brewing launched their Modus Hoperandi in both cans and bottles they quickly decided to drop the bottled product due to high demand for the cans and insufficient production to accom-modate both packages.

So what makes cans so popular? There are a variety of reasons. First and foremost is quality. Cans are the best possible vessel to preserve freshness in craft beer. The two biggest enemies of beer are oxygen and light. Cans pre-vent both of these enemies from touching the beer far better than bottles do. The result is a beer that maintains its freshness longer and allows the drinker to better taste what the brewer created. As if that weren’t enough, cans are also perfect for just about any occasion. We spend a lot of time involved in outdoors activities in Arizona, and nothing is better than craft beer in a can for the out-doors. Whether camping, boating, playing golf, hanging around at the pool, canned beers are just flat

out better. Some places, lakes and public swimming pools come to mind, don’t even allow bottles, so cans are the only choice. In those situations, why not bring the best possible beer? Even when there is an option to bring bottles, cans are still preferred. Cans are lighter than bottles so when out camping, packing in and packing out the empties is simple. Why would you want to have to carry out heavy, empty bottles? Cans can be crushed, take up less space, and an empty case is easy to carry.

Cans are also easier on the envi-ronment. Aluminum is infinitely recyclable and a can only takes eight weeks to make the trip from recycling center back to the can-ning line. In addition, they are

almost fifty percent lighter than bottles so they cost less to ship, both when empty and when full. This greatly reduces their carbon footprint.

There has always been a percep-tion that canned beers are some-thing less than high quality, but that is simply untrue. Dale Kat-echis from Oskar Blues, the man who lent his name to the flagship Dale’s Pale Ale and started what the folks at Oskar Blues humbly call The Canned Beer Apocalypse, states it very simply,” The myth is that high-quality craft beer has to be in a brown bottle.” When in reality, bottles were only used as a

matter of economy. Canning lines were too big and too expensive; and minimum can orders were prohibitive. That is the main reason why bottles were the initial choice of craft brewers. To further put that perception to rest, look no further than the New York Times. Several years ago they conducted a blind taste test of 25 top selling pale ales, Dale’s Pale Ale won the competition and was named as the Best Pale Ale in America. It was also the only entrant in a can.

Since the last time we looked at craft in a can, the canned beer world has absolutely exploded. Locally, SanTan brewing has hit the scene harder than any new brew-ery ever has. They have four core brands, Devil’s Ale, Hefeweizen, Epicenter Amber and Hopshock IPA. Their package beer is avail-

able exclusively in cans, and they have become one of the fastest growing breweries around. Their recent release of their seasonal beers in cans makes them the first Arizona brewery producing a reg-ular seasonal can lineup. Another local brewery that has embraced the power of cans is Grand Can-yon. Their Black Iron IPA is avail-able only in cans, while they offer their two top selling beers, Sunset Amber and American Pilsner in ei-ther bottle or cans. The latter was recently introduced in cans along with a wheat beer. All four roll up into the Trail Mix pack, a twelve pack featuring three each of all four canned beers. SanTan also offers a variety pack. Given the current success of sampler packs, these should be popular just about everywhere.

Nationally, canned beer is also growing. San Francisco based 21st Amendment Brewing has become known as a leader in cans, as was evident at the Americ-CAN Festival held last May in Chandler. Hell or High Watermelon Wheat and Brew Free or Die IPA are their

By “King” James Swann Hello again beer lovers, last week in my “Rising Tide of Craft Beer” article I mentioned that the landscape of craft beer in Arizona had changed drastically in the last few years. With more choices than ever before this really is a great time to be alive if you love a tasty beverage. Case in point, thanks to Quail Distribution, Black Diamond Brewing from Concord, California is now available here in the Grand Canyon State. Never been to Concorde? It’s just North East of San Francisco near Mt. Diablo. You might even call it a skier’s brewery it’s a favorite destination for after the slopes.

With big beers such as Rampage Imperial IPA, Jagged Edge IPA and award winning brews such as Freestyle Saison and Steep Trail Amber Ale, there is sure to be something to please everyone who fancies trying something new. The brew I am really looking forward to is the Rampage Imperial IPA. Sitting at a hefty 9% ABV. and 88 IBU’s this beer is seriously worth your attention. What I really appreciate is the method of dry hoping they use to build layers of different hop aromas and scents. This beer hits your nose with huge notes of grapefruit, pineapple, mango and a touch of green pine before you even have a sip!

Of course the next question would be where do I get these amazing brews? Funny you should ask as this Thursday the 11th of April, Black Diamond Brewing is holding an Arizona Release Party at Whole Foods Chandler Bar at about 6pm. You will be able to sample five different brews on tap and even meet the brew masters. By the way, all of this wonderfulness only costs five dollars. How’s that for a slice of fried gold?

Minnesota’s Surly brewing is known for making big beers in cans with entries such as Furious, a big American style IPA and Cyni-cAle, a Belgian Saison style beer. They also have some of the finest looking cans out there. You can also find great looking cans from Indianapolis youngster Sun King. Open only a couple of years, these folks already make some fantastic beer and are achieving national recognition for their flavorful beers. Anderson Valley, Abita and Breckenridge are all beers avail-able in Arizona that have, intro-duced cans.

Websites are even springing up around the canned beer revolu-tion. CraftCans.com lists 388 beers made by 135 breweries located in 40 different states that are canning at least one beer. These beers represent 65 differ-ent styles. The most popular beer style in cans is IPA, but if you look hard enough you can find Pumpkin Ales, Barleywines, Cascadian Dark Ales and even a Russian Imperial Stout in cans.

This year on May 18th, as part of American Craft Beer Week, the Third Annual Ameri-CAN festival will take place at the Scottsdale Civic Center. This celebration of canned craft is hosted by SanTan Brewing but will include about fifty breweries, including some never before seen in Arizona. This includes nationally acclaimed breweries 21st Amendment, Six-point, Revolution and Halfacre. We also hear rumors of a couple of surprises that may be in store for those attending. Canned beers are fresher, maintain their quality better, are easier to take with you for outdoor ac-tivities and help the environment. There is absolutely no reason not to try some craft in a can. Fortu-nately, as you have no doubt seen, it is easy to do so. Places like Papago, Whole Foods, Tops, Sun Devil, World of Beer, and many more all have a great selection. Chase Field, considered by many to be the most fan-friendly and affordable ballpark in the country, has made a number of additions in order to enhance the fan experience, including a new res-taurant, and additional food options. Perhaps the most exciting addition this season is Game Seven Grill lo-cated in the Gila River Casinos Plaza. Game Seven Grill, created in partner-ship with Levy Restaurants, takes the place of Sliders, which had previously been in the same location since 2003. The 20,000 square-foot restaurant will feature memorabilia such as game-used jerseys, World Series programs, tickets, game balls and pennants from Game 7 of the 2001 World Series in which the D-backs won the only championship in Phoenix’s major professional sports history. At the heart of Game Seven Grill is a Southern Pride XLR-600 Smoker, with the capacity to serve up to 600 pounds of the restaurant’s signature slow smoked barbecue. The classic “All American” barbeque menu will also include house smoked ribs, beef brisket, chicken, turkey and pork with three distinctly delicious sauce offerings. The menu also includes a variety of unique items, including the “Hottest Wings in Baseball,” made with Ghost Pepper (Bhut Jolokia), a chili pepper recog-nized by Guinness World Records as the hottest pepper in the world. Fans can sign a waiver, dig in and try to become the “King of the Wing” and take home a

custom Game Seven Grill fire helmet. New food options include a Double Stack BBQ Burger, Italian Job, and Turkey Cheesesteak all available along the Insight Diamond Suite Level which is open for everyone in the ballpark to enjoy. The menu has also expanded to include two vegan options with the Pretzel Edamame and an Achiote Bast-ed Mushroom Wrap available for in-seat dining. Perhaps the most unique item to be added to the menu is regional favorite Sonoran Dog available at two Red Hot Grill locations on the Upper Level and Main Concourse. In addition, fans will be able to get a beverage and salty snacks on the go at the new Pepsi Grab-N-Go location on the main con-course that features items such as AMP Energy, SoBe Lifewater, SoBe Energize, Lipton products and Frito-Lay products that are only sold at this location. Also new this year is a Jack Daniel’s portable bar where fans can enjoy an ice cold beverage and watch the game from an expanded viewing area. Inside Chase Field, the D-backs have upgraded their sound system through-out the park to ensure the best quality for fans’ listening pleasure. The Team Shop will also sell new headwear as part of the 2013 MLB Diamond Era 59Fifty collection from New Era that features light weight and breathable materials that include UPF 50+ sun protection.

Just because you work on Monday doesn’t mean that Sunday Funday can’t exist in your grownup life. As an adult, you should know that it requires a lot of motivation to get you through the workweek, therefore, it is essential that you squeeze every last drop of weekend out when you have the chance. It’s the responsible thing to do. Aside from discussing how you dismissed your diet regime this past weekend with coworkers, you’ll also be able to throw trivia questions at them to gauge just how cool they really are outside of work (sarcastic FYI: knowing random indie rock facts is up there on the cool scale). Of course, this is only likely to occur if you attend Crescent Ballroom’s

trivia extravaganza. Most people understand that Sunday Funday requires a few adult beverages so that’s why good ol’ CB offers great drink specials from 6 to 8 on this day. Feast on the Street is an event held in Downtown Phoenix’s Roosevelt Row dedicated to showcasing the flavors of Arizona—I’m not just talking about food flavors, either. There will be live local bands playing in the evening surrounding the half-mile-long dining table, beer gardens, and local art. Bad Cactus

Brass Band kicks off the musical entertainment at 4, followed by Mr. Mudd and Mr. Gold’s country-blues-rockabilly sounds at 5. Bluegrass jammin’ takes over the stage at 5:30 with Renegade Stringband while The Haymarket Squares introduce diners to punkgrass from 6-9 as they roam along 1st Street. Chicha Dust will bring the psychedelic rock at 7 followed by folk-western band, Dry River Yacht Club, playing until 9 pm. That’s a whole lotta local music, people, and you can open your ears to discover their vibrations for free along with the rest of the event. Realize the originality of our desert city this weekend. Who’s up for a folk and classical piano collaboration? Tift Merritt is famous for her dusty vocals and folk/alt-country sound, while Simone Dinnerstein is a Juilliard-trained classical pianist, and their album, Night, is a stunner that marries their different styles together organically. The album includes ten collaborative tracks and two apiece for each of the ladies to do solo, and their performances are often understated and rapturous all at once. You don’t expect acoustic guitar, piano and Merritt’s vocals to make the classic “I Can See Clearly Now” feel vibrant and completely new, for instance, but that’s what happens. And Dinnerstein’s lovely, lilting vocals on “I Will Give My Love an Apple” will give you chills. Haunting, complementary and absolutely beautiful, Night shines like the moon.

By now you pretty much know what you’re getting when you hear a new Dido record: jazzy, breathy vocals (“Happy New Year”), a healthy dose of songs about love or broken relationships (“Loveless Hearts, “Love to Blame”) and songs which mix her angelic vocals with varied dance and trip-hop beats in catchy ways (“Blackbird”). The title track and “Go Dreaming,” however, stand out because of their focus on making

your life matter, and “Let Us Move On” features an uplifting rap appearance from Kendrick Lamar which is a nice change of pace. Fans likely won’t be surprised by much of what they hear on this record, but it’s still a pretty good album and since she sticks with what works fans should enjoy Girl Who Got Away.

By Stan Bindell Chuck Hall’s rockin’ blues guitar landed him in the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame some years ago, but he’s going strong with gigs throughout the valley and in many places throughout the state. Hall recently performed at the Thunderbird Roadhouse in Phoenix. “The owner has a great attitude about live music,” Hall said. “They have good food and it smells good.” Hall also recently played at Mia’s in downtown Flagstaff.

Hall is a regular at Harold’s on Thursday nights, but has also been found at the Copper Blues in Phoenix and Janey’s in Cave Creek. Hall was raised in Louisiana, but raised in Texas. His blues can be described as fiery upbeat tempo guitar blues. Hall came to the blues in a roundabout way. His mother, Betty Sue Hall, was a classical pianist, so that is what he learned first. However, he would listen to the regional radio shows and liked what he heard, but he didn’t know

what it was called. Then he heard Eric Clapton call it the blues and later he heard BB King. In 1984, Hall would open for BB King at the Celebrity Theater. “There are a lot of amazing blues players in Arizona,” he said.

Hall’s idea of great Arizona blues players includes Hans Olsen, Francine Reed and Big Pete Pearson. “But most of us are imported,” he said. “There’s not a lot of blues roots here, but I’ve been here since 1984. That’s a long time.” Hall said the main guys in his band are: John Moore on bass can “find the inside of the music.” Roy Cameron on drums, who was born in Scotland, every night finds a new way to get into the groove the band plays. “I have three sets of guys who play my stuff, but each is a bit different,” he said.
