W ith their beautiful hues of reds

and whites, poinset-tias typically signify that the winter holidays are approaching. These colorful plants are often given as gifts and used as decorations in the home or office. Here are some interesting facts about poinsettias. The poinset-tia’s showy “flowers” are actually a cluster of modi-fied leaves called bracts. The true flowers are small and clustered in the center of the bracts. Despite popular belief, poinsettias are not poisonous, but the latex in their milky sap can be irritating to some.

Do you hate tossing the plant in the garbage at the end of the season? Poin-settias can be planted in the landscape and provide a beautiful display year after year. With that being said, you may have tried to grow your poinsettia inside your office or in the landscape and ended up with a leggy or dead plant. Follow these strategies to increase your plant’s chance of survival.

If you are getting a poin-settia with the thought of planting it in the yard, it is best to purchase the plant in mid-November since these early flower-ing varieties are ones that will also bloom earliest in the landscape. With a late flowering variety, bloom-ing may be interrupted by cold weather in the landscape.

Once you have your poinsettia home, enjoy

the blooms and keep the plants in a bright area and water whenever the soil is dry. Although those decorative sleeves may be pretty, take them off because it will keep the plant soggy and cause it to decline. Don’t add any fertilizer, just keep it happy and green (and inside) until the last frost is over around March. After that time, you can transition the plant to the outside by cutting the stem down to 4-6 inches on each branch and plac-ing the pot in a shady area for a couple of weeks. If you prefer to keep the plant in a pot, just replant it to a larger pot and follow the same guidelines.

Once it is acclimated, choose a sunny, well-drained area that will not receive any artificial light at night, so don’t plant them under your window, near security lights, or by the streetlights. Poinset-tias bloom when there are longer periods of dark-ness for several weeks. If it senses light during the night, then it will mess up its internal clock. Make sure you pick a large enough area because poinsettias become a large shrub in the landscape. Plant it to the same depth

as it was in the pot, mulch, and keep it moist. It is very important to keep it moist at all times and not dry out while it’s in the landscape. If it dries out, some of the lower leaves will drop off.

Prune it back to about 12 to 18 inches from the ground around Memo-rial Day and Labor Day, leaving 4 leaves on each stem. This will allow it to develop into a more compact plant and not become leggy. Fertilize it with a slow-release fertil-izer each time you prune. Hopefully by October, you will start to see the first bit of color in the leaves and a lovely display by the holi-days. If this sounds too complicated, then you are probably better off throw-ing the poinsettia out with the Christmas tree.

NEW YORK — Taking on a cat is one thing. Catifying your home to rise to true Cat Person status is another.

Choosing just the right gear and tweak-ing your home can keep felines safe, sane and stimulated, said Kate Benjamin, a “cat style expert” who has appeared on Animal Planet’s “My Cat From Hell.”

She has teamed with the show’s host, cat behaviorist Jack-son Galaxy, on a new DIY-focused book, “Catify to Satisfy.” It’s a follow-up to their 2014 best-seller, “Catifica-tion,” with both offering tips from cat owners on what they’ve accom-plished with home enhancements.

Most human-cat relationships can be improved by clearing up one basic misunder-standing, Galaxy said in a recent interview from Los Angeles:

“Cats are not dogs. Cats care not at all about pleasing you. That’s not why they’re here. You have to get your ego out of the way when it comes to having a good relationship with a cat. You have to compromise to live successfully with them.”

Q: I want to ask you about this supposed 1920s speakeasy peephole. I am curious as to its authenticity. I have sent you these photos for reference.

or not the item is an original speakeasy peephole door-knocker. However, I found several for sale on the Inter-net being sold as speakeasy peepholes. One was of the same type as yours for sale at $90 and another of cast iron openwork for $125. That is all I can say, perhaps our readers will have an opinion.

 Q: I have this shaving mirror.

My grandfather was from Eng-land. He was born in 1886 and died in 1941. In his lifetime, he traveled in Europe from early 1900 to 1939. He was a

carpenter by trade but I do not think he made the case.

The shaving mirror case has a beveled mirror inside. It has Sorrento engraved on the front of the case. I would like to know how old it is and any-thing else you can tell me.

shaving mirror was made in Sorrento, Italy. The inlaid male and female dancers are made of various natural colored woods. The overall condition

appears to be excellent. Sor-rento, Italy, is famous for this type of fancy inlaid woodwork. It was made in large quantities for export worldwide and for purchases by visiting tourists. The time of production is early 20th century, so it is close to if not 100 years old. Potential dollar value is less than $100.

vase as a wedding gift in 1930 from a well to do family friend. It is 10 inches tall. Do you have any information about this piece? Is it worth preserving? I cannot locate any information on the Internet. Anything you can tell me to identify it would be so helpful.

World War I and II. The style is Art Deco. Czechoslovakian decorative arts are a large category of collector interest. The main collectors club has a website, www.czechcol-lectors.org, you might want to check out. Potential dollar value is $50 to $100.

lection of OPA tokens before he passed away. He said I should get them checked out. Is there any-thing at all you can tell me about them? I do not even understand what OPA stands for.

Price Administration. OPA tokens were produced from 1944 to 1945 for rationing during World War II. OPA’s were used by retailers to give change back for food bought

with ration stamps. They are collectible and sell from 50 cents to $2 each depending on type and condition.

I am the Queen of the Last Minute. No matter how much time I have to prepare for an event at my home, seconds before my guests arrive you'll find me running around like a crazy lady, trying to pull everything together. Some might argue that I'm an adrenaline junkie, living for an exhilarating photo finish. But the fact is, I am always positive I can fit about 48 hours' worth of work into 12 hours. Hopefully, you are much more organized

than I am and NEVER have this problem. But just in case you are more like me than you care to admit, here are a few tips from my little bag of tricks for setting a beau-tiful Thanksgiving table in minutes.

Trick no. 1: Grab a blanket and use it as a table topper

Go on a reconnaissance mission throughout your house looking for a throw blanket you can steal from the back of a chair or the foot of a bed. If you have a choice, grab one that is either

neutral or shows off the colors of fall. Can't find a blanket that will work? In a pinch, I've even been known to use a shawl or scarf. When you score one, lay it over your dining table on the diagonal. You now have a beautiful table cover-ing upon which to build your quick but gorgeous tablescape.

2. Layer the place settings to make them look luxurious

When you buy a home, it’s all about the numbers. Before you apply for a mortgage- knowyour numbers! Your mortgage rate is based on your credit scores, debt-to-income, and howmuch of a down payment you can afford. Your credit scores can fall between 300 and 850.Lenders use these numbers, which are compiled by three credit bureaus and Fair Isaac togive them a quick snapshot of your credit-worthiness.

To qualify you, lenders use two ratios -- income to mortgage debt and income to total debt. Toqualify for a 30-year fixed rate loan that is federally insured (FHA), your income to mortgagedebt can be no higher than 29% of your gross annual income. If you’re carrying credit carddebt, student loans, or pay child support, your monthly debt service must be counted. To getthe income to total debt ratio, multiply your monthly income by 41%.

For most loans, your credit scores affect down payment requirements. If you have a highcredit score, you can most-likely get an FHA-guaranteed loan with only 3.5% down, but ifyour scores are low, you may be required to put as much as 10% down.

Where your down payment comes from also makes a difference to lenders. If you have savedthe money yourself, or it comes from a recent real estate transaction, lenders tend to be morerelaxed than if your parents are giving you the money as a gift. All these numbers have tomake sense to the lender, so you can comfortably afford the home you want to buy.

achieve this affect in a snap just by stacking interesting dishes on top of one another, starting with a unique charger. If you don't have enough pieces in your dish set to serve the whole gang for Thanksgiving, no worries. Mix together different patterns, like I do on my table. How you

do so will depend on the shape of your table and how many place settings you have of the dishes you want to use. I'm usually two plates short when I host Thanksgiving, so I set the sides of my table with the same dishes, then use the second set at the host and hostess seats.

3. Use place cards to make each place setting look special

OK, I know, I know. You are probably rolling your eyes right now, saying, "If I had time to do that, I wouldn't be in a panic!" But the truth is, it just takes seconds to do place cards for your guests, and it pays big dividends. That special step of putting someone's name above their seat makes them feel treasured, a valued part of the gathering. One year, I grabbed little boxes of chocolates at the grocery

store, wrapped them up in brown craft paper and tied on a gift tag bearing each guest's name. These little brown paper pack-ages tied up with strings did double duty as cute name card holders and fun take-home gifts. You can use just about anything to hold name cards, from fall gourds to pine cones.

4. Opt for a simple centerpiece that looks dramatic

Here's my formula for a centerpiece that looks sensational but takes seconds to pull together: Line stuff up and down the center of your table. It could be a row of pumpkins interspersed with clusters of votives, lanterns or hurricanes holding flickering candles, with fall leaves and ber-ries collected from your yard poked in between. Another one of my

done-in-a-flash center-pieces is a big, beautiful bowl holding seasonal treasures. I love to fill blue and white oversized serv-ing bowls, cachepots or English foot baths with a tumble of gourds.

We do have a plumber, but I want to choose and pick up the new trim materials myself. Can I just buy new chrome fixture trim, or will I have to get the entire mixing valve package?

mixing valve is fairly new and you have the make and model, you may be able to order just the chrome trim package from a local plumbing supplier. If you're really lucky, you may even have some different trim styles to choose from. If the mixing valve is in bad shape or new trim is not available, your best option may be to replace the entire valve.

The good news is that many mixing valve

packages come with the trim, tub spout and show-erhead included. Your plumber can then install the new mixing valve complete with all the new accessories to give your bathing area a nice, clean start.

thing from a paper bag to a cardboard box to a cat carrier. It should slowly be moved out of base camp as socialization progresses.

“Catification is a lot of DIY,” Benjamin said. “You don’t have to buy anything. You can look

at what you already have and do a little rearranging.”

The time it takes to move beyond base camp varies. You should be able to tell when a cat is ready by body language and behavior.

Observe, observe, observe

Before you make changes to your home, understand basic behav-iors. Start by simply

watching your cat.“We really do anthro-

pomorphize cats a lot more than we should,” Benjamin said. “You really have to under-stand their true nature, their instincts and their needs.”

Some basic personality archetypes: the Mojito Cat, who is social, outgo-ing and confident of her territory; the Wallflower Cat, who lacks such confidence and slinks

around on the periphery to avoid confrontation; and the Napoleon Cat, who sprays, bullies and otherwise postures aggressively.

Many cats are a mix of the three.

ScratchersCats like to scratch on

different surfaces and at different slants. Try various materials — card-board, carpet, thick sisal, tighter sisal, wood and

cork, for instance — and see what they like. Benja-min discovered that yoga mats are great scratchers. Consider swatches.

Some cats are hori-zontal, vertical or incline scratchers.

“You have to get in there and really pay atten-tion,” Benjamin said.

One reason your cat likes to scratch your sofa, for example, is to mix your scent with hers. But the sofa might also

be made of a deliciously scratchable material. And it’s sturdy as the cat exercises its upper body. That tells you what type of material, incline and environment to provide as an alternative.

Location is everything when it comes to scratch-ers. If your cat constantly plays with the door jamb in your bedroom, you’d be a fool not to match that slant and place a scratcher nearby.
