Dr Tushar Mehta MD - Hands up who

thinks Doctors are not interested in

Nutrition

Following the UK’s leading dietetic expert Professor Tom Sanders being told by medical press “Doctors are not interested in Nutrition’ Canadian family MD Dr. Mehta explains why an updated knowledge of diet and nutrition is imperative and evidence based strategies to fight chronic disease.

Due diligence, best practice places an obligation on keeping up to date with evidence based dietetic science. Dr Metha provides some vital studies an evidence based research to explain why nutrition is vital in your patient’s care plan and help you avoid losing your patient’s trust.

Cristina Perrone

- Probiotics a

Optimum Health

Gareth Zeal - Digestion: Root of All Evil?

The importance of Digestive support in

Patient Care Plans

There are still big gaps in the knowledge base of health professionals on just how important gut health is as a tool in patient health risk, outcomes and survival. Much standard medical practice increases patient risk of dependence on expensive life threatening procedures and drugs that could easily be avoided with a little more knowledge of digestive system function and responsibilities. Talk suitable for GPs, midwives, dietitians, nutritionists and all public health advisers.

Gareth Zeal looks at potential causes of IBS, colitis, Crohn’s Disease and food sensitivities and some of the non invasive solutions to avoid and tackle the condition’s such as gut flora management, the role of nutrition and diet therapy and the FODMAP diet.

Dr Emilie Combet - Iodine Insufficiency

- Glasgow university

Dr Emilie Combet Aspray University of Glasgow, Glasgow Public Health, Nutrition and Dietetics, Nutritional Biochemistry BSc, PhD Lecturer in Human Nutrition, Glasgow Royal Infirmary Glasgow.

Research informs Dr Combet’s teaching, on the MSc in Human Nutrition, mainly on the “Food and Nutrition through the lifecycle” and “Digestion, absorption and metabolism” courses.

Dr Combet is specialisation leader for a Research Methodology course on the MSc Translational Medical Sciences, focussing on biochemical and metabolic research. Her published papers include iodine deficiency and a look at seaweed foods.

This talk will be on iodine insufficiency and seaweed.

Dr Tushar Mehta MD - Reversing

Diabetes with Simple Diet and

Nutrition Best Practice

The role of optimum diet and nutrition in avoiding, treatment and reversing diabetes type 2 is undeniable. Any health professional who fails to help patients understand the true implications of following a diet a standard diet rather than an optimised diet with vastly more fruit and vegetables and plant based sources of protein and essential fats risks failing duties of due diligence and best practice.

With a barrage of evidence based study and research Dr. Mehta argues it’s a Doctor’s duty to properly acquaint themselves with the facts and living in denial is failing both their patients and the future of the National Health Service. Suitable for GP’s, Dietitians, Midwives and all public health advisors

2:30 - Veronika Powell - Why You Don’t

Need Dairy

Veronika’s compelling talk asks: is it natural to consume milk after weaning?

Indeed is it natural to consume cow’s (or goat’s) milk at all? What is the life of a dairy cow and how does this link to our health? Why has dairy been linked to cancers? How do growth hormones and oestrogen in milk affect us?

What are the dangers of milk protein and saturated fats? Do we - and especially our children - need calcium from dairy? If not, where should we obtain it and how do we ensure we have strong bones?

Dr Melanie Joy -

Speaking Truth to

Power: Being an

Empowered Vegan

in an Animal-Eating

Culture

In this presentation, we examine the ways that carnism, the invisible belief system that conditions people to eat animals, distorts vegans’ perceptions of themselves, others, and veganism. We then discuss how how recognizing these distortions can lead to personal empowerment and the empowerment of the vegan movement.www.carnism.org

Dr Richard

Twine -

Understanding

Vegan Transition

In this talk I reflect upon my research as a sociologist into the question of vegan transition. During 2013 I interviewed vegans in Glasgow, Manchester and Lancaster about their narratives of transition. I explore what we can learn for broader attempts to veganize society from such rich detailed accounts of the everyday possibilities, joys, pains and obstacles of vegan transition. I argue that lessons can be learnt from such accounts and they can go some way to providing the animal rights movement with a much needed understanding of social change.www.richardtwine.com

Professor Erica Fudge - The History of

the Vegetable Eaters

This talk will look at the strange history of vegetarianism in England: at the radical nature of the ‘vegetable diet’ in the seventeenth century, and at how different from, and similar to it, our conception of veganism is today.www.strath.ac.uk/staff/fudgeericaprof

Libby

Anderson

- How You

Can Make a

Difference for

Animals in

Scotland and

Beyond

OneKind is an animal protection charity based in Edinburgh working to end animal suffering through campaigns, research and education. In this talk I will explain how a very small charity seeks to influence politicians and the public and how we decide our main policy positions and campaign priorities. Current campaigns focus on the pet trade, especially exotic pet-keeping; the protection of free-living wild animals in the UK, and the effects of fox-hunting and snaring; and the use of wild animals in circuses. Finally I will touch on next year’s Scottish Parliamentary elections and what people can do to get more action for animals in the next session.www.onekind.org

Dr Matthew Cole and Dr Kate Stewart -

Animals, Children, and Vegan Living

Animals, in the form of ‘pets’, ‘cuddly toys’ or ‘cute’ media characters are often used to invite children’s affection, love and compassion. But often this takes place at the very same moment as children are encouraged to (unwittingly) participate in the exploitation of animals – think ‘happy meal’ tie-ins where a child can eat a hamburger at the same time as playing with a toy animal from Babe or The Lion King. This talk explores how this muddled thinking is encouraged throughout our culture, but also how to reverse the process through introducing children and their caregivers to vegan living.

‘Vegan Any Questions’ panel

Want to be vegan but don’t know where to start? Are you a vegan but concerned about whether you’re eating enough protein? Concerned about animals and want tips on how to make a difference? Come to Vegan Any Questions where a panel of experts will answer your questions.

should vegans promote this approach?’

A series of activists for the vegan lifestyle engaging in discussions/debates/

workshops about effective vegan outreach on Sunday

Sponsored by Yaoh

2:00 – 3:00 - Prof. Gary L. Francione

- Why Vegans Should Not Support

Welfare Reform Campaigns, Single-

Issue Campaigns, or Groups that

Promote Either (via Skype)

Welfare reform campaigns and single-issue campaigns necessarily involve the promotion of animal exploitation. The groups that promote them claim that they are effective and practical. There is no empirical evidence to support that view and, in any event, these campaigns are explicitly and overtly speciesist. www.abolitionistapproach.com

3.00 – 3:50 - Prof. Gary L. Francione -

Q&A (via Skype)

Ask Prof. Francione anything in this interactive Q&A session with the audience, conducted via Skype.

4:00 – 5:00 - The Big Discussion -

Reducetarian - should vegans promote

this approach?

Should vegans be promoting reducetarian as an option for pre-vegans? Or should vegans make it loud and clear without compromise that 100% veganism is a moral imperative, and anything less implies supporting continued animal exploitation?

Join the big discussion on this recently hotly-debated topic. Vegfest Scotland / VegfestUK organiser Tim Barford and the Grumpy Old Vegans will discuss this topic and invite members of the audience for some questions & answers.

Amanda Woodvine – With a little help

from my friends: how to be a friend to

veggie elders

When Joyce went into care in 2007 after developing dementia, she was given meat to eat despite having been a dedicated animal rights campaigner. Staff essentially shrugged their shoulders and offered the excuse: ‘Well, she wouldn’t know any difference, would she!’

Joyce had no relatives to fight her corner and point out how unethical this was… but something really positive grew out of this awful disregard. VfL came into being to help protect all the other Joyces in care homes. So successful has it been that VfL now offers essential support for older vegetarians and vegans in their own homes as well as in care.

Shona Barr – Raising

awareness of ethical

investment – value

as well as values

Ethically influenced purchasing decisions are now firmly established as part of everyday life. Ethical investment accounts for over £13.5bn of UK savings and investment, which equates to a mere 1% of the market. We will consider the main areas of ethical investment and discuss some real life scenarios to illustrate how ethical strategies can be applied in practice. We will look at the financial planning landscape further to pension legislative changes in April 2015 with focus on the issues relevant to those approaching retirement and beyond.www.affinityifa.co.uk Twitter @AffinityIFA

Tina Fox –

Silver travel for

vegetarians and

vegans

Tina Fox enjoys travel very much but finds it a great challenge to get decent veggie and vegan food, particularly breakfast. Learn from her experiences and perhaps contribute some tips of your own on how you cope with travel, ensuring that the food you get is tasty, appropriate and worth the money you are paying!

Barbara Chalmers –

Funerals & stuff

If you have clear values that underpin the choices you make in life, we think you might want to exercise choice right till the end of life – and maybe beyond. If you care about your body, what you put in it, your carbon footprint, the planet, the environment, your legacy – you might want to do death differently. You might prefer natural burial to cremation. You might rather have a DIY funeral. You might prefer a bamboo shroud than a brass handled, polyester lined, mahogany coffin. Come along to this talk and find out more.www.finalfling.com Twitter @FinalFlingUK

Jane Hughes –

Simply inspiring

meals for one

VfL understands the difficulties in catering for just one vegetarian or vegan. Indeed, some of the most popular pages on our website are our Easy Recipes for One. So our latest publication focuses on senior vegetarians and vegans who cook for themselves. VfL’s roving chef, Jane Hughes, demonstrates some dishes from the guide, which is available free of charge.

Alec Cameron –

Estate planning – if

you leave nothing to

chance, you chance

nothing

Estate planning is about making sure your assets are protected throughout your lifetime and that your wishes are followed regarding the distribution of your estate after you die. According to new research, the nation’s estate planning is in a shocking state with almost two thirds (61%) of people not having addressed this issue. The session will consider asset protection and everyday threats to your assets, the consequences of doing nothing, inheritance tax planning and estate planning.

Jane Hughes – Waste not, want not –

making good use of the food you buy

Roving Chef Jane Hughes looks at ways to get the most out of the food you buy. Share your own ideas for using up scraps and squeezing the best out of your budget.

Dr Kim Stringer – Caring for older

vegetarians and vegans

Find out how VfL works hard to support older vegetarians and vegans and ensure that their diets are not compromised. This work is not just focussed on those who are in care homes, but also those who live independently.

Jason Schroeder – Scottish Men’s Sheds

Association

What happens to men when they are retired, unemployed, on shore, demobbed – in short ‘have time on their hands’? This can be a challenging time particularly for men who have grown up in a world of ‘doing’. The Community Men’s Shed phenomena has reached Scotland and is gaining momentum across the country. This is a place within your community where there is a fully equipped workshop and a social area open to all men.www.scottishmsa.org.uk Twitter @ScottishMSA

Amanda Woodvine – Nutrition for

older vegetarians and vegans

Research has shown that vegetarians and vegans tend to be very healthy – perhaps more so than their meat-eating peers. Vegetarians typically have a more nutrient-dense diet than meat eaters. And a well-planned veggie diet can help prevent a range of diseases, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer. This talk will help you get the balance right – whether you are an older vegetarian or vegan yourself, or simply cater for one.

Daria Wall – Yoga

session: ‘Let food

be thy medicine’ –

finding balance

Daria from DP Wellbeing will use restorative yoga along with the wisdom of Chinese medicine, Ayurveda and Western science to talk about how the food we consume affects the body’s equilibrium.www.dpwellbeing.com

History of Veganism Exhibition

The UK’s first vegan festival History of Veganism exhibition will be brought to VegFest Scotland courtesy of the Great Yorkshire Vegan Festival where the exhibition made its debut earlier this year.

The exhibition will take you back in time to where veganism first began. The historical journey will show how veganism has developed through the years and how the vegan movement has evolved over time.

The exhibition will also include a display on modern day vegan living showing the range of avenues that pre-vegans can explore with an intention to going vegan and how these avenues can help.

Thinking of going vegan or just want some healthier options?

Vegetarian or Vegan and need some inspiration?

Then you have come to the right place – VeggieVision TV!

After spending time and money getting a veggie TV programme off the ground and being told that ”It’s ahead of its time” and too much of a “niche” market, Karin Ridgers realised that she needed to think…

“How can I get a positive, veggie friendly TV programme off of the ground”, rather than “It’s never going to work!” (With many thanks Tony Robbins, American Peak Performance Coach.)

And she thought of the internet. Well this was before You Tube and Facebook too!

VeggieVision waited patiently (well not that patiently at times!) for technology to catch up with their idea and they are now so pleased to show you the exciting new and improved VeggieVision.TV - the internet TV station promoting everything fun and positive about veggie living and more.

VeggieVision TV is packed with fun, interesting and hilarious clips from all over the world – addressing the fact that here in the UK there are no veggie/vegan TV programmes.

Please check out VeggieVision.tv for vegan cookery - their growing number of film clips show you tasty vegan recipes step by step.

Fancy filming your own favourite vegan dish or sharing your vegan cooking tips? Do drop them a line at [email protected]

And to give you more they have VeggieVision Cashback (veggievisioncashback.com) where can save and earn £’s – AND for those who want to meet likeminded people they have VeggieVisionDating (veggievisiondating.com) too.

Please do check them out, sign up for their ezine and tell others too!
