Cantorial Concert Proceeds Benefit Israel Cancer

Research Fund

Sunday, Oct. 13

CJHS hosted its first North Suburban Math League Meet on Thursday night. We competed against Larkin, Niles North, Romeoville, and St. Charles North High Schools. We finished in 3rd place with a score of 150 points, within 10 points of Niles North's 160 point first place finish. We had a record number of participants including freshmen Sara Behn, Talia Gorstein, Lizzie Jansen, and David Weisskopf; sophomores Sarah Comar, Matt Dulberg, Kayla Fishbein, Hana Lieber, Aviva Hirsch, Maya Michalewicz, Emily Reisler, and Ranan Vales; juniors Leora Calamaro, Benji Fishbaum, Jonah Glick-Unterman, and Rayna Gorstein; and seniors Josh Aaronson, Talia Canter, Evan Gorstein, Joe Kupferberg, and Ari Spellman. Congratulations to all the participants, especially to our seniors who came in first place, our sophomores who came in 2nd place, and Jonah Glick-Unterman who finished first in the orals competition, with a nearly perfect score of 48 out of 50! classic tunes, many of which will

be sung with a unique

interpretation.

Proceeds from this benefit will

support scientific research of

malignant brain tumors at the

Israel Cancer Research Fund. The

ICRF has funded outstanding

cancer researchers at leading

Israeli institutions such as the

Weizmann Institute, the

Technion, Hadassah Medical

Center, and Sheeba Medical

Witnesses and Witch Trials Wednesday, Rabbi Silver came to Dr. Miller's junior American Lit class to discuss Jewish laws of edut (testimony) and the requirements for being a kosher witness. In addition, he discussed the appearance of a 'witch' in the Book of Samuel! This helped us form a deeper understanding of the Salem Witch Trials which we are following through Arthur Miller's The Crucible. Those Puritans could quote their Bible, but apparently many lives could have been saved had our rabbis dealt with the issue with a rabbinic Bet Din.

Geometry Constructions

Ms. Averbuch's freshman and sophomore geometry classes are working on constructions. Using the fundamentals of geometry, a compass, and a straightedge, they can now create beautiful equilateral polygons without any measuring devices at all. Ask your favorite frosh or soph for a peep in their notebook-you'll be surprised at what you find!

Mens' soccer brought in a huge win for Senior Night, beating Cristo Rey 3 to 1--a team that hasn't lost in conference for at least 3 years! Well done and godspeed to the whole team as they head into the postseason tournament, especially to seniors Jonny Chasin, Jeremy Goodman, Ariel Efergan, Federico Romano, Evan Gorstein, and Nathaniel Moses. Jeremy Goodman finished the regular season with a school record of 20 goals, and the team's most recent win clinched the 2nd seed in the Chicago Prep Conference Tournament--Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. at Harrison Park in Chicago!

win, triumphing over Chicago Hope in an intense 3 game match, after a close loss to St. Benedict's on Monday. Seniors Alena Burda, Alana Spellman, Jackie Geraty, Carly Rubin, Dana Levin, and Rachel Small led the JV and varsity teams to thrlling victory against Ellison in the last home game of the season.

Women's tennis also brought home a big win, avenging the men's defeat against Northtown in soccer earlier this week. Congratulations to doubles winners Avery Wein and Carly Silverstein, Tali Lupovitch and Izzy Brekher, Mollie Kramer and Eliana Kaufman, Emily Reisler and Maya Resnick, and to singles champions Madison Reisler and Elizabeth Barras. This was an especially sweet senior night for Carly Silverstein, Tali Lupovitch, Avery Wein, Marci Steinberg, Maddy Reisler, and Elizabeth Barras. Avery Wein reports, "It was a great way to end the season! We have been working so hard and our efforts really came through at the match." Congratulations to Coach Barb Finfer and the whole team on one of the best tennis seasons in CJHS history!

On Thursday the men's golf team played its final match of the year against Lake Forest Academy. Although coming up just short of a win, a valiant effort was put up by all members of the team. The team will practice one final time on Monday before seniors Adam Taitz, Aaron Drexler, Alon Spevak, and sophomores Seth Wein and Jake Lankford represent CJHS in the IHSA regional competition on Tuesday. As fall sports begin to wind down, cross country is only just getting underway! Our runners are pounding the pavement in preparation for the big Latin Invitational next week. Stay tuned

Our very own Dr. Rebecca Schorsch, director of Jewish

studies at CJHS, is honored to be one of three speakers

introducing Rabbi Asher Lopatin at his installation at

Yeshivat Chovevei Torah rabbinical school this Sunday in

New York. We are very excited to have Dr. Schorsch joining

the panel with Rabbi Saul Berman (formerly of Edah) and

Rabbi Daniel Landes of Pardes. Many congratulations to the

distinguished Rabbi Lopatin on his advancement to the

presidency of YCT. We look forward to many years of

inspiring leadership, of ahavat Torah and ahavat Yisrael, of kevod ha-briot and derech eretz. Yasher koach, Dr.

Schorsch, and chazak u'varuch, Rabbi Lopatin.

Lofty New Club Formed at CJHS

It is with great excitement that we announce the official launch of the Remote-Control (RC) Club at CJHS! RC Club, now a major presence at CJHS, explores all things remote controlled, from agile, powerful and durable quadcopters, to conventional RC helicopters, to high-flying remote-controlled planes. In the exciting world of technology, this club will approach these

fascinating machines in a hands-on environment, utilizing various methods of discovery including simulated flight, aerial photography, coordinated flight, robotics, and engineering. By the end of the year, we aspire for every RC Club member to be a proficient RC pilot, wielder of soldering irons, and collaborator. Through these various activities, RC Club help its members soar to new heights. There are many clubs of this nature in the Chicago area and there are plans to visit other clubs and invite speakers to our meetings. The 17 high-flying members are led by juniors Ruli Warner-Rosen, Alex Cope, Ziv Abergel, senior David Kosman, and faculty advisor Dr. Gary Auslander.

Fall Art Show

Ms. Marla Snyder's studio art class is hard at work preparing for their exhibit, "Texting," which will be on display at Am Yisrael Congregation in Northfield beginning Thursday, November 14. Students are painting on textures of fruits and vegetables in watercolor. Stay tuned for the grand opening next month!

Open House Our Open House takes place on Sunday, November 3 at 1:00 p.m. The format has been completely revamped, offering families the opportunity to learn about all aspects of student life at CJHS using an interactive and personal approach. The afternoon begins with a full blown activities fair and pizza lunch where all of our extra-curricular activities will be showcased by our students. Prospective parents and children will then be treated to unique opportunities to ask questions that are meaningful to them. A tour highlighting our students' experiences will follow. The afternoon ends with a Meet and Greet Reception with CJHS faculty, administration, and students. STAND UPdate Noa Gordon-Guterman reports, "On September 23, the U.N. released a report stating that the number of Congolese people who had fled their native country in search of a safe place of refuge had grown by 350,000 since August of this year. The total number of displaced Congolese people now totals a grim three million. Conflicts between rebels and the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo occupy many regions of the Congo, making living conditions for ordinary Congolese citizens dangerous and practically unlivable. The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, conveys that 'more people have been forced to flee their homes than at any time since the Rwandan genocide [in 1993]. If refugees and internally displaced persons were a nation, they would make up one of the world's 30 biggest countries.'"

Elli Cohn ('09) has just received the Jeanette Eichenwald Interfaith Award presented at the 2013 Wallenberg Tribute Dinner sponsored by the Institute for Jewish-Christian Understanding at Muhlenberg College. She spoke about her involvement in IFYC at CJHS which led to her position as president of the Star-Crossed Students Club at Muhlenberg College.

A Taste of Torah: Noach

As we have read in our grade-level minyanim this week, Parashat Noach famously opens with a description of Noah as "ish tzadik, tamim hayah b'dorotav," a righteous person, who was blameless in his era (Genesis 6:9). Yet just one chapter later, God calls to Noah to enter the ark, saying "Come into the ark, you and all your household, for it is you I have seen righteous before me in this generation" (Translation of Robert Alter, Genesis7:1). God tells Noah directly that God has noticed Noah as a righteous person, ki otcha raiti tzadik lefanai bador hazeh. God uses the exact same language as in chapter 6, but noticeably does not use the word "tamim," of blameless or simple, in his description. The renowned commentator Rashi notices this inconsistency and suggests that God does not call Noah both righteous and blameless to his face because God is being mindful of principles of derech eretz, of common human decency, the ways of the world. Where the narrator speaks in chapter six and extols Noah in full, Rashi suggests that one "should praise somebody greatly when he is not in front of him, but should do so less to his face." There are multiple reasons why Rashi would say this, and our 11th century commentator explains his own in his commentary to the Talmud (Eruvin 18b) that multiple forms of praise will render the praising party as a phony (kemahanif). But I think there is another, more subtle, reason why God would utter more praise behind Noah's back than in front of it. Here we see God as an educator. Praise is an essential motivating tool for humans and validates important effort that we put forth. In a generation of scoundrels, Noah stays strong in his moral convictions - he certainly is a tzadik! But God also needs to motivate Noah to strive for new heights of achievement. After all, Noah has to lead all of creation onto an ark! In many ways, this is the model for interactions between teachers and students at CJHS, as well. We strive to honor the tremendous accomplishments of our students. We simultaneously seek to motivate our students to take strive further in their learning and growth as individuals, as Jews. With God as a model educator, may we continue both to recognize accomplishments and push our entire community to new heights.
