“Treba ja~ati svijest na prostorima Bosne i Hercegovine o kul-turnoj raznolikosti uz uzajamno uva`avanje i toleriranje”, ka`edon Ivan Ravli}, `upnik @upe Presvetog trojstva u Sarajevu iautor zanimljive izlo`be predstavljene u sarajevskom Collegiumartisticumu proteklog mjeseca.

Ravli} se odlu~io daje otvori fotografijom glavnog oltara Crkve koji predstavlja kri`niput ra|en od klorirane keramike iz daleke 1907. godine. reason of convergence, while unfortunately at some other timesit leaned in the negative direction, driving nations apart.

However, on behalf of coexistence, cooperation and under-standing, which are all inevitable ingredients for the subsistenceof all of us together in these areas, we prefer the religious valuesthat bring us closer to each other. And such can be witnessed onevery step we take in this country and in the traces of the cen-tury-long existence of four of the largest monotheistic religiouscommunities in the crowded area of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“We ought to build up people’s conscience about cultural di-versity by mutual appreciation and tolerance in the area of Bosniaand Herzegovina”, says Don Ivan Ravli}, parson of the Holy Trin-ity Parish in Sarajevo and author of the fascinating exhibition pre-sented in Collegium Artisticum last month in Sarajevo.

Don Ivan Ravli} says that the idea of an exhibition of sacraland religious exhibits of the religions on the territory of BiH – Isla -mic, Roman – Catholic, Orthodox and Jewish religious commu-nities – which exist in BiH, has been growing in him for a long time.

“This cultural event is a step forward for our region towardsimproving inter-religious communication, ecumenism, and dia-logue”, says Ravli}, whose idea was unofficially supported byCardinal Vinko Pulji}, Reisu-l-ulema of the Islamic community inBiH Mustafa ef. Ceri}, Archbishop Nikolaj, and the president of theJewish community Jakob Finci.

BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER

The objective of the exhibition is, as of all true believers, toconnect and unify BiH nations in their diversity and thereby getpeople closer to each other in their coexistence.

Visitors had the opportunity to see numerous photos of reli-gious objects and documents about religious life in BiH since oldtimes until now, whose originals could not be brought to Col-legium Artisticum due to various reasons.

Photos of valuable details from the church of the Holy Trinityin Novo Sarajevo were exposed. Ravli} decided to open the exhi-bition with a photograph of the main altar of the church repre-senting a cross road made of chlorine ceramics from 1907. Theside altar is a piece by one of the most known architects fromthese areas, Josip Vanca{, called the Heart of Mary made of oakand covered with gold somewhere in Tirol.

MADONA S KRISTOM, PORTRET BOSANSKE KRALJICE,

KALE@I I KADIONICE

SINAGOGA U BIJELJINI, NO[NJA BOSANSKOG DERVI[A,

NAJSTARIJE D@AMIJE

MADONNA WITH CHRIST, PORTRAIT OF THE BOSNIAN QUEEN,

ENGRAVINGS AND CENSERS

Then follow two valuable paintings from the 17th century.Madonna with Christ is a gift from an unknown master fromVenice and it has been borrowed from a monastery in Kre{evo. The painting Sinless pregnancy by Stjepan Dragojlovi} from 1621arrived from the monastery Kraljeva Sutjeska. Visitors of the ex-hibition who have never been to the monastery in Kraljeva Sut-jeska could see the portrait of Bosnian Queen Catharina Kosa~aas well as valuable exhibits from monasteries in Mostar, Fojnica,Gu~a Gora, Petri~evac, Livno, Rama-[}it, and Tolisa.

The National Museum in Sarajevo borrowed some of the exhi -bits to the author, and among them there are engravings andcensers from the 17th and 18th century, as well as bells fromBobovac.

The beautiful painting Dazzled Saint Franjo arrived from themonastery in [iroki Brijeg, a piece by an Italian master from the17th century.

It is a custom for richer people to help their parish from timeto time. Johan and Viktorija Rusnak did just that in 1907 by gi vinga sacramental cross to the Church of the Holy Trinity in NovoSarajevo which is in use even today.

Lilies as a Bosnian motif and the symbol of the long Bosnianlife are printed on a priest’s cloak made of red brocade.

A part dedicated to the Orthodox in BiH offered a variety ofexhibits from all parts of the country. Visitors could enjoy every-thing from churches in Trebinje and Dobrun most probably builtin the 12th century, and the house of birth of Saint VasilijeOstro{ki in the village Mrkonji}i, over to the Orthodox Church inBanja Luka from 1930.

The author also tried to present an evangel from the 14th cen-tury, which was one of the curiosities of the exhibition.

SYNAGOGUE IN BIJELJINA, COSTUME OF

A BOSNIAN DERVISH, THE OLDEST MOSQUES

In the part dedicated to Judaism, photos of breviaries attractedlooks as well as a praying mantle from the synagogue of Ashke-nazi Jews. Those who did not know this earlier could at Ravli}’sexhibition find out that there is a Jewish synagogue in Bijeljina. Moreover, the beauty of making of a cemetery chapel in the Old

Predstavljena jei ljepota izrade grobljanske kapele u Starom sefardskom grobljuu Sarajevu.

Dio izlo`be posve}en islamu otvorili su eksponati no{nji me|ukojima se isticala no{nja bosanskog dervi{a iz Hajdarije, po-rodi~nog muzeja {ejha Muse hafiza ]azima Had`imejli}a izKa}una.

Sephard cemetery in Sarajevo was presented as well. The part of the exhibition about Islam was opened by an exhibit

of costumes among which the costume of a Bosnian dervish fromHajdarija taken from the family museum of Musa hafiz ]azimHad`imejli} from Ka}un was particularly interesting. Besides nu-merous paintings of headstones from the Ottoman period visitorscould also see calligraphic writings and famous ’levhas’. One ofthem originates from the mosque Sulejmanija in Travnik. A calli-graphic writing from the Land museum in Travnik from 1815 wasalso extraordinary. It is written on it in Arabic: Ve lillahi teala(Everything belongs to Allah). The way people have used the Divi~mosque for centuries was presented on an old postcard todayowned by the Museum of History of BiH. Similar to that one isanother postcard with the motif of El~i Ibrahim – pasha’s medresa(Islamic school) in Travnik renewed in 1893.

The photo of [i{man Ibrahim-pasha’s mosque in Po~itelj, oneof the oldest religious objects was also presented at the exhibi-tion. And of similar value was the photo of a Qur’an from 1458held in the monastery of the Holy Trinity on Petri~evac.

’RAHLE’ MADE OF NACRE, WOOD AND TURTLE SHELL

’Rahle’ (foldable book stands which Muslims use for reading)could also be seen, usually with a copy of the Qur’an on them. Those presented at the exhibition by Don Ivan Ravli} are made ofnacre, wood and turtle shell and have been borrowed from themuseum of Musa hafiz ]azim Had`imejli}.

The exhibition that was visited by many people from Sarajevoduring the last month in Collegium Artisticum is the first of itskind in our areas. Thus, it carries great importance for the historyand culture of its nations, considers the author. One should reallywish many more exhibitions of this kind both to Don Ivan Ravli}and the nations of BiH. Because, as Don Ivan put it - events likethis one will connect people in their diversity.

The cable car will use the existing route, it will have 15

posts, and the cabins will be made out of glass and alu-

minum, with eight seats. The capacity is 1.000 passengers

per hour and instead of the usual 12,5 minutes, the new

cable car will get to Trebevi} in six and a half minutes. The

project investment estimate is 16 million KM.

According to the project idea for the new Trebevi} cable car fi-nanced by the City of Sarajevo and submitted by the company

„Geodet“, the first and last station of the cable car will remain onthe same locations as before. The first station will have an en-trance hall, a small shop and a café-restaurant. It will be equippedwith a staircase and two elevators that will be used to reach theplatform from which the cable car starts its journey. The last sta-tion will also have a coffee bar, a shop and a garage facility forcleaning the cabins. There will also be a few binoculars availablefor the tourists to observe the panorama of the city.

One of the priorities of the Action plan of the City of Sarajevo2006-2008 is precisely the reconstruction of the Trebevi} cablecar.

“We practically initiated this project a few years back. By set-ting aside resources from the city budget for demining Trebevi},which amounted to 700.000 KM, and with the financial help andcooperation of the Old Town Municipality, we have created theconditions for the reconstruction of the cable car”, said Semiha

Borovac the mayor of Sarajevo and also reminded that accordingto the estimations by BHMAC, the area of Trebevi} should be com-pletely free of mines by the end of this year.

“Jo{ prije nekoliko godina mi smo prakti~no pokrenuli ovaj pro-jekt.

the design of a project idea for the Trebevi} cable car, with anapproved budget of 65.000 KM. After finishing the procedure, theproject idea by “Geodet” was selected. The budget for 2008 ap-proved by the City of Sarajevo for the continuation of the projectactivities amounts to 70.000 KM.

Mayor Borovac accentuates that the following period shouldbe used for the design of the master plan document for Trebevi},which would in turn include the cable car reconstruction. Activi-ties for the preparation phases and tasks for the master plan havebeen started in cooperation with the Old Town Municipality. Hav-ing these two documents in place (the project idea and masterplan), completes the conditions for submitting the applicationsfor the request for donations from national and international in-stitutions and foundations. One of the models for the realizationof this project could be concession, a decision about to be madeby the Sarajevo Canton, says Borovac.

“The goal of this project is returning the functionality to one ofthe symbols of Sarajevo and the enrichment of the tourist offer. A project of this significance should be a priority in the budgetson national and municipal levels because it is a highly importantproject for Sarajevo as well as for BiH”, emphasized mayor of Sarajevo.

During the research activities performed on the Desilo locationin Hutovo blato near ^apljina, the team of archaeologists led

by Snje`ana Vasilj last month identified two layers, one antiqueand one prehistoric, and concluded that an old stronghold prob-ably existed on this site, in front of which there was some kind ofharbor used for communicating with other parts of the RomanEmpire.

Archeologists say that the antique layer dates from the secondcentury BC, and they have found fragments and amphora corks in it.

The second, prehistoric layer revealed ceramics of smoothermaking and two fragments of ornate ceramics considered to dateto the Iron Age. Last November an exceptionally preserved axewas found in that layer, and this time divers found a buckle fromthe Iron Age on the bottom of the lake. Based on the research andmaterial evidence experts conclude that there was no water herea long time ago, at least not of today’s form.

Up to now we didn’t know about the construction on pillars, first set in the ground and then braided to form a plot. That kindof construction either regulated the flow of waters or was in thefunction of the harbor that must have existed here – saysSnje`ana Vasilj.

Experts also believe that there was a fort on the hill above Desilo. They base this conclusion on the revealed graveyard near thewater, and on some findings on the hill itself.

In antique times life here was much more vivid than we hadimagined it to be. The findings below water, the stronghold andthe graveyard speak about a very interesting micro-region thatcan be systematically explored from the prehistoric period till me-dieval times– says Vasilj.

Experts plan to conduct further research on the hill on the De-silo location where they suppose there was a fort once. A keyfrom the Roman period has been retrieved on the hill.

A year ago Vasilj’s team revealed two antique ships in Desiloand during the exploration of the water they discovered 150 am-phora corks with imprints of workshops, numerous amphora frag-ments most likely used for transporting wine, some 200 amphoralids, a remarkably saved metal axe thought to be older than theships, remains of domestic Illyrian ceramics, and a Roman ironspear - all previously featured in BiH CITY REVIEW.

The ships in Hutovo blato are the first ever found Illyrian ships. They are 2.200 years old and assumed to either have been an-chored or wrecked here. The most recent research that showedthe existence of a harbor city serves as a good explanation towhy there are ships here in the first place

Direktor Fortunatoursa Mili Bija-

Fortunatours, the most respectable tourist agency in Herzegovina, opened a branch

office at Hotel “Turist” in Jajce with the purpose of bringing the beauty of the royal

city Jajce, a candidate for the UNESCO World Heritage List, closer to its clients.

The branch office was opened in the name of the tenth anniversary of business cele-brated by the owner of the hotels “Turist” and “Plivska jezera” Dominik Peji}.

Director of Fortunatours Mili Bijavica said that he is satisfied with the preparations forthe upcoming tourist season but also mentioned his worries about the closing of the onlydiplomatic branch office in South America. Now instead of going to Buenos Aires for avisa, those who want to visit Me|ugorje must go and get the visa in Washington. Of coursethis is a very difficult and expensive procedure, so that the number of visitors coming fromSouth America to Me|ugorje could plunge in the following months.

uspje{nijih do sada.

The city authorities of Mostar have started the preparations

for the upcoming tourist season, which is expected to be

one of the most successful ones so far.

The of new pedestrian signalization like that across all largerEuropean cities will surely contribute to this season’s suc-

cess. The new signalization will help both foreign and domestictourists to get by more easily in town, and to find places of cul-tural and historic interest in Mostar without difficulty.

At the Tourist community of the Hercegova~ko-neretvanskaCounty they particularly emphasize that the realization of thisproject will top off the long term venture of setting up advertis-ing signs and urban tourist signalization, making Mostar the onlycity in BiH to have these elements.

USAID supported the realization of this project by setting aside27.000 for the pedestrian signalization. The directions for pedes-trians are made in English and the BiH national languages, andare shaped to clearly show the way to the monuments one wantsto see, just like in renowned world tourist destinations like Pragueor Dubrovnik. The new signalization is in brown color and hasbeen set up on around 20 spots in the center of town, and it willsoon be set up in Neum, ^itluk, ^apljina – customized to the char-acteristics of these towns.

Zato je vje~no.

Ru~no pravljene knjige prepisivali su strpljivi kaligrafi

gu{~ijim perom, tintom, kistovima i uz pomo} drugog pribora zapisanje.

(Kur’an)

Since ages ago beautiful and kind words were written on

stone, wood, parchment, glass, silk, gold, and paper by

those who showed respect for it, those who were born for

it. The hand followed the thoughts that were born in the

soul, and the soul watched over every bend of a letter. It

simply had to be perfect. And that is why it is eternal.

The art of beautiful writing was developed in our areas as well.Handmade books were rewritten by patient calligraphists that

used goose quills, ink, paint-brushes and wrote with the help ofother writing kits. Even holy texts which by themselves had spir-itual value were rewritten by calligraphists, who also decoratedsacral objects and homes as the famous Taj Mahal built between1632 and 1647.

Today in the Japanese andChinese writing culture callig-raphy is very important and in-spiring. More important thanthe legibility, it was importantto accomplish perfect estheticbalance and express feelings,so much that it is said that cal-ligraphists used to practice formonths to perfect in certainmoves. Many calligraphistspoint out the meditative char-acter of their job. Even thoughcalligraphy has lost its signifi-cance in Europe, it lives on as aform of art and hobby. Arabicand Hebraic calligraphists havea century-old tradition.

The tradition of calligraphy in BiH is carried on by calligraphistsin many cities. In Tuzla, among others, these are Prof. Edina

Halilovi} and Prof. Nermina Kamberovi} Barakovi} who pre-sented their works in Konjic in the middle of March as part of thecultural event «Days of Sejfulah ef. Proho» (1859 – 1932).

- While other artists express themselves on paper, canvas, cop-per, wood, and stone, my teacher Prof. Edina Halilovi} and I daredto paint on glass to perpetuate God’s word. I find inspiration formy arabesques and details in my grandmother’s books, rooms, gardens, carpets, sofas. We are obligated to preserve Bosnianvalues in our hearts, paintings, and books, says member of theAssociation of Artists of Tuzlanski Canton, Prof. Nermina Kam-berovi} Barakovi} for BiH CITY REVIEW.

The poet and woodcarver from Konjic Aziz Nuhi} exposed hislevha (Islamic paintings) and woodwork.

Except for its long tradition in woodwork Konjic also has itsknown calligraphists whose pieces are kept in Ghazi Husrev-bey’slibrary. Known calligraphists from Konjic were Dervi{ Ga~o son ofMustafa, Ahmed son of Salih from Neretva (Konjic), Mula-Husejnson of Muhamed from Seonica, Sejfulah Proho, and Mustafa sonof Abdulah al Bosnevi al Belgrad~iki (from Konjic) who, as a stu-dent in Istanbul in 1758, rewrote a piece from the Arabic Gram-mar «Izhar al – asrar».

Current projects in the heart of Tuzla’s old town: the re-

newal of Turali-bey’s mosque, the construction of the Is-

lamic Center, and the final touches to the second salty lake

This issue of BiH CITY REVIEW gives you a little more aboutTurali-bey’s mosque, which is the most renowned building of

Ghazi Turali-bey’s bequest in Tuzla. Built between 1548 and 1572 in an open field east of the city

gate, which is the reason why it got the name Field Mosque later on. In March of 2005, the BiH Committee for preservation of na-

tional monuments decided to proclaim both the Field Mosque, that is, Turali-bey’s mosque and Tuzla’s cemetery national monu -ments of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

It is considered one of the most monumental mosques in thearea of northeastern Bosnia. It kept its original appearance until1890 when the authorities decided to build other facilities aroundthe mosque, and filled and flattened the terrain around it. As theentrance to the mosque ended up lower than before, the interiorof the mosque was filled as well; 145 cm were added to the ex-isting walls and a new roof was made. This is when the mosquegot its look as we know it, with minor additional changes in 1910,1967 and 1968. This mosque has been a shelter for Muslims inTuzla for four and a half centuries. It has been the place wheregenerations and generations of young people have been taughthow to be good Muslims. It has served as an oasis for communi-cating to God, a place where Muslim souls could experiencepeace, contemplation, and closeness to Allah.

Posebna vrijednost i specifi~nost Gazi Turali-begova vakufasvakako je, prije svega, prisustvo Gazi Turali-begove d`amije na-stale u 16. stolje}u, „tom zlatnom vijeku islamske kulture u Bosnii Hercegovini“.

NAGNUTA MUNARA BIT ]E ISPRAVLJENA

U cilju o~uvanja njene autenti~nosti projektant jepredvidio njeno ispravljanje, dovo|enje u vertikalni polo`aj i prezi -|ivanje gornjeg dijela zida munare iznad postoje}e {erefe (ogradana munari). Ovo ispravljanje se izvodilo hidrauli~kim presama uzprethodno izvo|enje temeljne konstrukcije.

Autori projekta su dipl. in`. arh. prof. Zlatko Ugljen i dipl. in`. ar-hi tekture Husejn Dropi}.

in Tuzla have made its survival possible to these days. And onceagain, in cooperation with the Government of the Federation, Can-ton Tuzla, Municipality Tuzla and the Islamic community, the citi -zens would like to be included in - as people in the Islamicco mmunity of Tuzla like to call it - the book of greats who havesaved the bequest with deeds and funds.

A specific of Ghazi Turali-bey’s bequest is certainly Ghazi Tu-rali-bey’s mosque from the 16th century that is called „the goldenage of Islamic culture in Bosnia and Herzegovina“. This mosque isboth the crown and cradle of Ghazi Turali-bey’s future compound.

The need for removing the redundant land to reach the origi-nal level of the ground, and shaping the harem (a marked part ofthe mosque’s yard that is in most cases partially a cemetery),which was lowered by 145 cm with respect to the surroundingroads, made the authors decide to also shape the roof differentlyand design an entrance porch with sofas (the elevated space infront of the mosque, right next to the mosque’s wall used for pray-ing when there is no room inside the mosque), and designing theharem of the mosque. The harem is reached using a staircase andaccess ramps specially adapted for disabled persons, while itssoutheastern side is inclined and surrounded with green.

LEANING MINARET TO BE STRAIGHTENED

Above the walls of the mosque from which layers of stone addedduring the Austro-Hungarian period are being removed to discoverthe original parts from the Ottoman period, there will be a sharp-angled four edged pyramid to remind of traditional Bosnian roofscovered with wood.

The location of the building and the sagging of the terrain onthis part caused it to lean to the side, in particular the minaret inthe northeastern direction. Aiming to preserve its authenticity, chief designer wanted it straightened and have the upper part ofthe minaret’s wall above the existing {erefa (balustrade on theminaret) rebuilt. This straightening would be conducted using hy-draulic press machines upon the finished basic works.

The authors of the project are graduate engineers of architec-ture Zlatko Ugljen and Husejn Dropi}.

This summer, somuni (traditional Bosnian flat bread) and cakesby “Klas” along with the products of the „Sarajevska pivara“,

will be included in the food offer at hotels, restaurants, cafeteriasand fast food places across Dalmatia, for the most part along theMakarska Riviera. This is the result of the successful presenta-tion by “Klas”, “Sarajevska pivara”, and the other members ofthe MIMS Group at the last “Gast 2008” fair in Split.

- In Split, both our company and Sarajevo’s food industry“Sprind” chiefly focused on the presentation of bakery productsand half ready meals. Croatian food industry representatives haveshown great interest for our products, and it is certain that oursomuni and traditional cakes will be placed on the Dalmatian mar-ket this summer, while „Sarajevska pivara“ will step out with itsfa mous beer and other products, said Sr|an Mandi}, head ofthe Department for marketing, market research and developmentat „Klas“.

Taj posao jeostavio u naslije|e starijem sinu Red`epu, a 1966. posao preu-zima njegov brat Mujo, o ~ijoj dobroti i plemenitosti je kolega Pod-gorelec pisao u BiH CITY REVIEW-u.

I njeni sinovi Adis i Amir na-stavljaju put svojih predaka. U~e tajne obiteljskog zanata i

They are Banja Luka’s brand and have existed for more than ahundred years. Their form, taste and way they are served are

unique. They are Banja Luka’s chevapi (traditional Bosnian meat-balls) served in flat bread. Those who come to Banja Luka and donot try chevapi- especially at the restaurant “Kod Muje” (AtMujo’s) – it is as if they have never been to Banja Luka at all. Havingchevapi is a tradition for visitors and tourists to the city on Vrbas.

Banja Luka’s chevapi are made of several kinds of finest meatmixed with spices, including the inevitable garlic. The preciseratio of mixing the spices is known only to a small number ofcooks and the secret is transmitted from older generations to theyounger ones in the family. Chevapi are shaped by hand or usinga machine for meat grinding with special add-ons. That is howthey have been prepared from generation to generation. Oneshould eat real chevapi using a toothpick and, of course, by nomeans should they be had without homegrown onion. Unlike Sara-jevo’s chevapi, Banja Luka’s chevapi are grouped together andare grilled in “tablets” consisting of four lined pieces of chevapi. The portions are served as small, middle and large.

The history of Mujo’s Banja Luka’s chevapi actually dates from1923 when Banja Luka, having less than 20.000 residents, wasthe transit spot for merchants traveling from central Bosnia to-wards the west. In that year, Red`ep \uzel opened an eatingplace that became widely popular a few years later. He endowsthat business to his older son Red`ep, and in 1966, his brotherMujo took over the business. In a previous issue of BiH CITY RE-VIEW our colleague Podgorelec wrote about Mujo’s kindness andnobleness. After the earthquake (1969) Banja Luka developed ina fast pace and that restaurant became one of its symbols. AfterMujo’s getting hold of the business, the restaurant went througha revival. That is when it got the name “Kod Muje” (“At Mujo’s”).

Mujo introduced an array of changes in the way of serving andnew recipes of grilled meals, making the restaurant famous for itsBanja Luka’s chevapi in the area of ex-Yugoslavia and all aroundthe world.

Legendu o Muji i banjalu~kom }evapu prenose i Banjalu~anikoji `ive {irom svijeta.

His daughter Emina joined Mujo in the business when she wasa girl. She was going to school and at the same time she waslearning the craft’s secrets. Mujo died in 1991 and his daughterEmina continues with the business. She expanded the businessto suit the modern world but continued making chevapi accord-ing to the traditional recipes. Her sons Adis and Amir are follow-ing in their ancestors footsteps. They are learning the secrets ofthe family craft and they will continue the tradition, which is nowmore than eight decades old. They hope to continue doing busi-ness in the restaurant under the same name.

BANJA LUKA’S CHEVAPI IN RIJEKA

Today, “Kod Muje” is located in the center of town near thecinema “Kozara”, and it hires five employees. Mujo’s daughterEmina Smailagi} says for BiH CITY REVIEW that her goal is tokeep the restaurant named after her father going in Banja Luka. This wish emerges from the love and respect she feels for her fa-ther. Her brother owns a restaurant in Rijeka but Emina says thatit is not the same thing.

People from Banja Luka that live all over the world are passingon the legend about Mujo and Banja Luka’s chevapi. Some peo-ple recently wrote that Mostar has the beautiful Emina (traditionalsong), while Banja Luka has Mujo and Emina.

“My father taught me the working habits, the secrets of thecraft and how to serve people. I am very grateful to him becauseof that”, says Emina. She does not hide her satisfaction aboutthe compliments she gets from all over the world.

She says about herself that she is a brave and determined per-son that goes through life with her head high, and she likes peo-ple just like her father did, and only by looking at them she cansay if they are good or not. And that is the only way she classi-fies people. It is thanks to her braveness and persistence that therestaurant “Kod Muje” was open during the war in BiH. Therestaurant was located near the former mall “Zenit” in that time.Emina says that the circumstances were not easy.

Still, she recalls the nice moments from that period of timewith more pleasure, and she shared with us a story when astrange older man stopped her and recognized that she wasMujo’s daughter. He told her that she looked like her dad, whichwas a great honor for her. He said that he used to work with herfather. She invited him for a portion of chevapi.

After the second restaurant, on the location near the Electro-technical school, Emina opened the third one – in a family housein the Nikola Pa{i} Street, in the area near the School of Eco-

HE KNEW BANJA LUKA’S SOUL

It seems that Mujo knew how to mix two-three kinds of

meat according to some mysterious ratio, added the spices,

carbon plus natural kindness, and of course - his experi-

ence. Some of that is for sure, or just mix all of that together

- and there you have it. His nationals respected him, not be-

cause of the chevapi but because he knew their soul… It

never happened that Mujo failed to treat his children’s

school friends with chevapi, nor that he had an argument

with someone.

Journalist from “Glas” once asked for his recipe and if

there was some secret hidden somewhere. Mujo said:

“Come on children - go home, wash the dishes, cook some-

thing, sweep the room and you will learn everything!” Mujo

the cook - knew that work, work and only work could res-

He liked the football team Borac. At one point he paid with

He used to give meat to neighbors - for free, of course.

BIHCITYREVIEW

THE STONE AND WOODEN MONUMENTKAMENI I SPOMENIK DRVENI

>>>Pi{e/Written by: Slavko Podgorelec

Various military formations passed through Banja Luka(across and along it)… As an old narrator from Banja Luka, the

writer Irfan Horozovi}, so beautifully put it–– some climbed up theroad to God, while some descended the stairs to their grave…

And, as another (again local!) man from Banja Luka, the fa-mous and most knowledgeable person about theater, the es-tablisher and actor Adem ]ejvan, who left this world in thesummer of 1989 (for a better engagement at the heavenly the-ater), used to say - this Town was Europe when many of today’s’European cities’ were not even aware of that…

However, in this issue we will not go on to talk about thecafés Banja Luka had before Paris and Vienna; nor will we speakabout the street illumination, which (according to inscriptions by“Sarajevo’s flower chest”, editor and publisher A.[. Kurt}ehaji})Banja Luka had before… oh, I will not even go into that...

Banja Luka features two unusual attributes: one is made ofstone and (as the writer of the story knows), it still exists on theBanjalu~ko field. The other one, placed in the center of town atthe very beginning of World War I (a wooden soldier, better saidan iron figure) unpleasantly went down before the fall of Aus-tro-Hungary, which – imagine that irony! – occupied, and a bitlater on, took over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Berlin Congress (both de facto and de iure), that is –both practically and legally – gave over Bosnia and Herzegovinato the mercy of Austro-Hungary… Of course – with the formalapproval of the Ottoman Empire that was practically unable toestablish anything in BiH.

The formal entry of the Austrian troupes and their sur-rounding of Banja Luka’s fortress (in July 1878) was quite ele-gant, but the central battle took place on the Banjalu~ko fieldon August 14 that same year…Banja Luka then experienced athree-day long terror from the part of the occupants (fires, rob-bery and much more), but the Austrians erected a monumenton the field– a pyramid that was practically the end of the prom-enade, or better to say of the alley planted alongside and acrossthe town on the Vrbas many years later by baron Jelzon (thebrigade general).

This Austrian mobilized the army to excavate seeds of treesand bring them down from the mountain Kozara. EngineerBlaha (a Czech, of course!) was chosen to do this task.

The monument erected by the Austrian authorities (what ademagoguery!) was only there to cause trouble to the peoplebecause of the guard beside it all day long (with a Turkish fezon the head, wearing the Empire’s and Kingdom’s uniform). What is more, ladies of…let’s say – a specific (delicate) pro-fession used to gather around that monument.

Page 65: BiH City Review [broj 25, april 2008.]

Naravno - uz formalnu saglasnost Otomanske imperije (kojaje, prakti~no, bila nesposobna bilo {ta etablirati u BiH).

Prije formalnog zavr{etka Prvoga svjetskog rata, banjalu~kipe~enjari kestenja rascijepi{e drvenog `eljeznog Viteza, podijeli{ega na “ravne ~asti”, i sagori{e...

The academic and musicologist Vlado Milo{evi} told this tothe author of this text and so did an honored gynecologist fromBanja Luka, Josip Jovi} the ’Driver’…

That is to say, Tone Gaji} (who held dance courses in BanjaLuka in the 20s and 30s of last century), used to say to his stu-dents who had not paid the fee: “Is Tone Gaji} a hooker by themonument? Is Tone Gaji} working for bricks?!”

We will go back to the monument in one of the following is-sues: the highlight of the Austrian occupation was represented bythe so called “Verman im ajzen” (wooden iron soldier).

That wooden sculpture representing a German soldier (proba-bly from the time of Carl the Great?!) was installed by the occu-pational (Austro-Hungarian authorities) in the center of BanjaLuka and it only served as a target for steel nail throws (10 mon-etary units per throw).

Income gathered that way was to be given to refugees andpoor people (whose caretakers had probably been killed on thebattlefield).

Banja Luka remains the same it has always been: when thenews that Franc Josef (both Emperor and King, of course!) hadleft this world in Schönbrunn, spread through town (just beforethe end of the war), and when the news that his successor abol-ishes all of the (alleged) participants of the famous Sarajevo as-sassination attempt (on crown prince Franc Ferdinand) - that wasthe end of the wooden Knight located in the center of Banja Luka!

Before the formal end of World War I, chestnut bakers fromBanja Luka tore the wooden Knight apart dividing it into “equalparts”, and burned it down…

And then, with true pleasure, they collected fine, straight andcase hardened nails from chestnut fireplaces, which would servetheir purpose for many years to come.

BIHCITYREVIEW

The average oldness of the housing in Biha} high; the war

caused additional damages, thus making necessary re-

furbishment of buildings

This year’s budget of the Biha} Municipality assures funds forcovering the expenses of the renewal and arrangement of liv-

ing facilities meant for a safer living and a nicer look of the city.Last year, the public building management institution „Stano -uprava“ Biha} signed contracts on the maintenance and man-agement of common parts with around one hundred buildings. The plans and programs for maintaining the common parts ofthe buildings were drawn up together with the representatives ofthe part owners of the buildings, so to better fit their needs. Thisis a major progress considering the fact that the Law on utiliza-tion, management and maintenance of common parts of buildingshas not been in practice for five years.

The positive trend continues this year with a series of pro-grams supported by the mayor of the Biha} Municipality Hamdija

Lipova~a and the Municipal Council, resulting in assured budgetfunds for this purpose.

The director of „Stanouprava“ Adnan Sabljakovi} says fa-cades of living facilities in the center of the city should be re-newed by the end of May, when it has been planned for the cityto get its central square whose construction is ongoing, plus thepaving of downtown, which has been a topic in earlier issues ofthis magazine, should be done this year.

DEMANDING WORK ON THE [ABULI]A HOUSE FACADE

The facade with decorative relief ornaments on the [abuli}ahouse has been reconstructed. This was a very arduous task be-cause the relief parts of the facade had to be made in Zagreb. El-evators in three story buildings have been finished, telephoneentry systems have been installed, and the front entrances havebeen renovated. Now they are on the job of placing fire extingu -ishers and a hydrant net in the buildings. Training of the buildingoccupants in cooperation with the Fire Brigade is also ongoing.

Stambeni fond Biha}a ima visoku prosje~nu starost,

zgrada

Uovogodi{njem bud`etu Op}ine Biha} osigurana su sredstva zaobnovu i ure|enje stambenih zgrada, a sve u cilju sigurnijeg

`ivljenja i ljep{eg izgleda grada.

IZGRADNJA PRVE POSLIJERATNE ZGRADE

Ukoliko Op}insko vije}e Biha} usvoji predlo`eni programnadzi|ivanja i izgradnje potkrovnih stanova, JU „Stanouprava“ biizvr{ila sve pripremne radnje i izradu projekata, s ciljem izgradnjenovih stanova.

As emphasized by Sabljakovi}, realization of the five-year planon refurbishment of 50 of the buildings that represent or areabout to represent a danger for the citizens has been initiatedthis year. Refurbishment of 12 buildings has been planned for thefollowing year, which comprises renovation of roofs and edges, drain pipes, and the facades. Works on two heavily damagedbuildings on the entrance to the city are already completed.

„Stanouprava“ will finance these projects through a revolvingcrediting system from the budget funds. The funds will be paidback by the people living in the buildings through payment forthe maintenance of the common parts of the buildings, and willbe used to create an investment fund for similar projects.

EXTENSION TO SIX BUILDINGS AND CONSTRUCTION

OF THE FIRST POST-WAR BUILDING

If the Municipal Council Biha} accepts the suggested plan onextension and building of pent house apartments, „Stanouprava“would conduct the preparatory activities and carry out the projectaiming to build new apartments. According to the Law on buildingannexes, „Stanouprava“ has already corroborated that the La me -la, SPO I and SPO II buildings in the Ozimice I neighborhood, aswell as two sky scrappers in Harmani and one next to the „Kom-biteks“ factory fit the criteria. These are buildings that have aflat terrace instead of a roof and are suitable for being built up on,and besides benefiting from these new apartments, these build-ings would also be completely renovated– from installations tothe facade. Moreover, „Stanouprava“ is carrying out the preli -minary activities for the construction of the first post-war buildingin Biha}. The construction should start next year, and a millionKM has already been assured for that purpose.

Bosnia and Herzegovina presented itself successfully at the

international “Gast” fair in Split, and the numerous compli-

and fresh ventures are there to prove it.

Over 150 exhibitors presented their goods and services at the“Gast”, of which 80 were part of communities and associa-

tions, and 70 of them exhibited as individuals. On the first two days of the fair, approximately 45 BiH compa-

nies presented themselves, and the BiH Innovators Alliance thatalready has two international recognitions attracted special at-tention with their anatomical chair. The entire quantity of chairs thatwas brought to the fair was sold out, and new orders were placed.

Presenting BiH as a partner country of the “Gast” fair resulted, among other things, in the initiation of the signing of the agree-ment on tourism cooperation between BiH and Croatia.

evaluation, this tourism cooperation could result, other than sum-mer vacations in Croatia and wintertime in BiH, in an exchangeof labor force considering the amount of BiH workers that arriveto the Adriatic coast during the summer.

The first dairy that produced Livno cheese was built under

the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1885.

Today the production cycle of this cheese is performed inphases – after the milk comes in, it is led to the pasteurizer

through a set of tubes after which it goes through a bacterio-phage process during which the bacteria get removed. Then fol-low the preparation of the milk for making cheese, warming upthe milk, compression and finally packaging. Next, the cheese isplaced in salt pools, a process which takes three to five days. After-wards it is taken to a fully automatic storage room to mature,

A upravo doma}e mli-jeko najvi{e utje~e na kvalitetu njihovog sira.Tome svakako do-prinosi ekolo{ka nezaga|enost livanjskog prostora, blizina morai raznovrsnost trava. It is consumed either as a cold side dish, main dish or

dessert. It contains the vitamins A, D, E, K, B1, B2, and C, as

well as mineral substances, lactic acids, and carotene. Be-

cause of its rich content, high biologic value, it is also highly

digestive and therefore irreplaceable in a regular everyday

diet but also in a weight-loss program. Besides the Livno

cheese, trapist, cincar and sheep cheese, the Livno Dairy

also produces semi-soft cheese like edamer and gouda, soft

creamy cheese, Livno feta and top quality butter.

NATURAL PASTURES AND HEALTHY MILK

The management is proud to say that they are one of the fewdairies in BiH that has never imported. And the number one rea-son that makes the cheese be of supreme quality is in particularthe domestically produced milk. Naturally, a great contribution toit is also the ecological cleanness of the area of Livno, the close-ness to the sea and the diversity of grass areas. The area of Livnomakes up 14,9 % of the total pastures in BiH and 24,1 % of thebest pastures, ideal for raising livestock. Cattle and sheep feedthemselves most of the year with grass from these natural pas-tures making the milk intended for cheese - healthy and of top qua-lity. That is where the specific taste of the Livno cheese that isconquering the global market without any difficulty comes from.

As the largest producer of cheese in BiH, the Livno Dairy an-nually buys eight million liters of milk from 1.300 cooperatives inthe area of Livno and neighboring localities, and it has more than50 employees. The dairy, as the most modern cheese produceron the BiH market, will obtain the following certificates in com-pliance with international standards: ISO 9001:2000 certificatefor quality, the ISO 14001 for environmental management and theHACCP for the health validity of its products.

And there it was again: another March 8 full of hackneyed greet-ing cards, boring flower bouquets and mawkish phrases ad-

dressed to women. The amount of social, institutional as well asbusiness hypocrisy manifested by men on that day was oncemore absolutely repulsive.

For the sole reason that it is those who write their little greet-ing cards, who are the main creators of the obvious inequality ofwomen, and the mobbing they exercise in the context of businesspolitics, apart from all other deeds that come out of their headsmost often implying that women are less competent, less suitableand less successful.

And just so I don’t get caught up in writing another hackneyedtext like those found in March 8 greeting cards, I will just statesome of the “great messages and warnings” sent by powerfulmen from their offices thinking it was enough to use a couple ofcommon phrases and globally known conclusions to make thingsright with us. Those words don’t mean anything to the womenthat use their own heads and really feel male chauvinism; theydon’t even bother to listen.

Namely, the financially powerful world organizations warnedabout the need for “improving the health of pregnant women andnew mothers, putting forward that mortality rates of mothers arebigger in developing countries than those in developed countries”.Apart from that witty statement they also added that “there isless improvement in countries with low income, particularly inSub-Saharan Africa”. Furthermore they said that “in West andCentral Africa, the average risk for death of women during deliv-ery is 1:17 compared to 1: 8.000 in developed countries. Themoney, however, is in the developed ones”.

They went on to point out the various issues women aroundthe world face, such as rape, violence, and premature marriage. And so much for the sex which rapists, violators in the family andat work and those that conclude marriages with minor women inthe first place, belong to.

Then again, the European Commission nominates only menfor future leading positions. As well as a study by the EuropeanCommission showing a smaller proportion of women holding jobpositions in every segment of authority in the majority of countries

“Majka mu stara, gdje si do sada?

This is what a story describing a Bosnian woman as thought-ful and caring would look like. Hence, the ferry traveling to

Sardinia carrying a married couple onboard sinks to the bottomof the sea. After three days of swimming butterfly, on the side, and backstroke, the Bosnian reaches the edge of a desert islandwith the tip of his fingers. As he reaches dry land, he hears a fa-miliar voice saying:

“For God’s sake, where have you been? I came here two daysago! Have you been cheating on me?”, his wife asked.

And of course, with marks on her hip from the coffee mill shesomehow managed to save from the wrecked ferry.

And again, theory says that only such a wife, with or withoutmill traces on her hip, makes wool socks for the soldiers of theBiH Army in the middle of winter, so they wouldn’t catch a coldon Treskavica.

Anyway, as Jusuf was conquering the \okin tower during thewar in ’94, a number of wool socks came to our unit straight fromGermany. It is important to mention here that Jusuf’s wife Belkisahad escaped to Germany together with her two small children.

Knowing that Juka loved Belkisa more than anything, we wroteon a piece of paper:

“I cried a river thinking about my dear Jusuf, a soldier of theBosnian and Herzegovinian army, while knitting these socks. I’masking faith to find a way to get these socks to my only man, friend and fighter Jusuf.”

Then we deliberately attached this crumpled piece of paper tothe socks using a pin and made them accidentally appear beforeJusuf. We watched Jusuf read the note, and a tear rolling downhis cheek. We acted as we had no idea what it was about, so weasked him why he was crying.

“That crazy Belkisa of mine made socks even in Germany ask-ing faith to bring them to my feet. And here they are - on my feet“,Juka told us, crying while putting on Belkisa’s socks.

Of course, we told him otherwise. We said that we were surethat Belkisa was with a German guy to keep her children alive, and that neither Juka nor wool socks for the BiH army weren’t onher mind.

No use! Juka kept crying, putting the socks on and takingthem off, smelling them. He said that Belkisa was a faithful

long. You have no faith in God”, he said. When it comes to faith, let’s say that Juka survived the war.

And that he asked Belkisa if she had been making wool sockswhile staying in Germany.

“Yes! I even attached a note to a pair of them. The note saidthat I wished the socks I made would reach you”, Belkisa told him.

Juka hugged her. And whispered in her ear: “There is a GodBelkisa! There really is!”

Gledali smo Jusufa kako ~ita ono cedulj~e.

- Idu}e godine u Ora{ju }emo poku{ati, uz pomo} Hrvatskematice iseljenika, dovesti i lutkarska kazali{ta iz Ma|arske, Au-strije i Srbije.

The fourth Puppet spring Ora{je 2008, sponsored by the Min-istry of Environment Preservation and Tourism of the Federa-

tion of BiH, was held in Ora{je. This one of a kind manifestationin BiH gathered seven puppet theater groups from BiH and theRepublic of Croatia that performed fifteen shows in total.

Every seat in Ora{je’s cinema and the culture houses in DonjaMahala and Tolisa was taken, and children once again proved tobe a great audience, and that they understand theater very well. This year’s «Puppet spring» enabled the youngest audience inOd`ak, besides those in the Ora{je community, to watch some ofthe shows.

- The number of shows increases every year. This year we hadfive more shows than last year and the number of guest theatershas increased as well. Theaters from Prijedor and Vara`din pre-sented themselves for the first time in Ora{je – said the organizerof the theater party for the youngest, Iljo Benkovi}, the presidentof the Movie Theater Association “Lipa” from Ora{je.

- Next year we will try to bring puppet theaters from Hungary,Austria and Serbia to Ora{je, with the help of Matrix Croatica forEmigrants. That way Ora{je would become an international cen-ter for children and puppet theaters – added Benkovi}.

Another special feature about Ora{je’s theater festival is freeaccess to each show and on their way out the children get achocolate bar each. The festival is also unique considering themass interest of children coming to the shows. Every year it is thesame in Ora{je– full halls of those who come to watch a show. The organizer emphasizes that around 7.000 youngest ones fromPosavina have visited this year’s «Puppet spring».

Alergije

Diagnosing allergies normally follows the usual symptoms,

and the key parameters that are considered when perform-

ing a diagnosis are individual and family anamnesis, an ex-

amination of the nose, a cytological sample from the nose,

and allergy tests (epidermis test).

Allergies are becoming more frequent than ever and can ap-pear in any stage of life, and the danger of them appearing is

especially high with spring knocking on the door. Allergies are acomplex problem, and that is why it is important they get pro-fessionally diagnosed and treated. People that have allergies are ina way limited in their activities but with good control and therapythe allergies can be successfully treated and kept under control.

Allergies can be manifested with the nose leaking, tears runn -ing and eye irritation, significant amount of secretion – sneezing, coughing, mucous membrane irritation but also allergic bronchi-tis and allergic bronchial asthma. A blister could appear on theskin surface. If the digestive tract has also been affected, stom-achaches and convulsions could occur, and it is also consideredthat headaches also have allergic diathesis (tendency for allergicreactions).

To effectively control allergic patients it is necessary to choosethe right medication, to confirm and avoid the cause of the aller-gic reactions, educate the patients about the treatment methodand self-help, and to regularly supervise as well as to adjust thetreatment to the stage of the disease.

It is very important for people suffering from allergies to be in-formed about all the different aspects of the disease– whatcaused it, how the symptoms appear, how to recognize the symp-toms and estimate their severity, how to choose the medication, and how to correctly apply it and estimate its effect. Education isespecially important for parents whose children are allergic.

DUST, POLLEN, FEATHERS, LOTIONS, LATEX, METALS...

Allergic reactions are caused by substances from our environ-ment known as allergens, and the most common ones are house-hold dust, ticks from our furniture, pollen found during the bloo mingseason, animal hair and feathers, grass and weed, medicaments,

SVE U^ESTALIJE ALERGIJE

EVER MORE FREQUENT ALLERGIES

>>>Pi{e/Written by: Alma Daci}

Page 93: BiH City Review [broj 25, april 2008.]

PRA[INA, POLEN, PERJE, LOSIONI, LATEKS, METALI...

Za uspje{nije izbjegavanje sezonskih alergena (peludi) stru~ -njaci preporu~uju izbjegavanje boravka i fizi~ke aktivnosti u pod -ru~ju bujne vegetacije u vrijeme visoke koncentracije peludi uzraku, posebno u jutarnjim satima.

Va`no je izbjegavati i dodir s ku}nim ljubim-cima s dlakom i perjem.

cockroach excrements and insect poison, but also very frequentlyfood, including milk. That is how even a bee sting can cause anallergic reaction. Thin-skinned people should pay a mandatoryvisit to the doctor and undergo therapy, because several stings inthe neck or spots where vital organs are located can seriouslyendanger one’s health.

Allergens can be found in crèmes, lotions and even in medica-ments for local use. People sensitive to latex (main ingredient inrubber products) should also be careful with cosmetic productssuch as hair coloring products. The ones allergic to insect poisonshould be careful while spending time in the nature and have aself-help kit nearby, just in case.

For a more successful avoidance of season-related allergens(pollen), experts recommend avoiding spending time or doing activities in leafy vegetation in the period of high pollen concen-tration in the air, especially in the morning hours. Drying and air-ing of clothing and sheets is recommended for the afternoonhours or on air-conditioners.

For those sensitive to allergens throughout the year, reductionof dust in the house is recommended by removing fabric-coveredfurniture, decorative cushions carpets, curtains, etc. The spacewe live in has to be maintained on a regular basis – vacuumedand dusted, and the sleeping pillows shouldn’t be stuffed withfeathers. Also, they shouldn’t be more than 5 years old. It is im-portant to avoid contact with hairy or feathery pets. Pets wouldbe best kept outside the house and bathed regularly to preservetheir hygiene.

People sensitive to contact allergens such as various metalsshould avoid objects and jewelry made of those metals.

Contemporary science is investing huge efforts in the pro-curement of right medicines for allergies, and it is important toknow that an allergy can only be controlled or healed after it hasbeen definitely confirmed.

MEN TO BECOME COMPLETELY

SUPERFLUOUS?

Delegates of the British Parliament planto introduce changes to a law, allo-

wing artificial sperm and eggs to inducehuman pregnancies.

The new scheme would allow the useof artificial egg cells and spermatozoidsin scientific experiments but not for hu -man insemination, causing anger withsome delegates who are for the possibil-ity to be open to people suffering fromcancer and those that cannot naturallyget children.

The major reason against allowinghuman insemination with the help of thistechnique is the fact that it would repre-sent the “ultimate incest”, because eggcells and spermatozoids could be createdfrom the embryonic cells of the donors (asexperiments with mice showed), meaningthat one person could effectively becomethe child’s mother and father.

Another consequence is that men couldbecome completely superfluous in theprocess of human reproduction, transmitsObserver.

Former American lawyer John Franken-field, who spent two years in prison

guilty for stealing was told by a judge: geta shovel, get a job!

John Frankenfield appeared before ajudge in Auburn, Maine after being accu-sed of violating a condition of probation.Judge Thomas Delahanty told him to re-port back next month with a plan forpaying back $219,000 in court-ordered re-stitution for clients. Slavni engleski laid-back gitarist Chris Rea, kojeg nazivaju jo{i britanskim Bruceom Springsteenom, nastupio je 8. marta u

paviljonu 5 Zagreba~kog velesajma pred osam hiljada posjetilaca.

The famous English laid-back guitarist Chris Rea also known asthe British Bruce Springsteen performed on March 8 in the

5th pavilion of the Zagreb International Fair before 8.000 spec-tators. Christopher Anton Rea or Chris Rea performed within theEuropean part of the tour “The Return of the Fabulous HofnerBluenotes” that started in February and will end in April. Overthe last few years Chris Rea left the noisy London and moved toCockham, a small town 50 kilometers away, where he refurbisheda 700-year-old mill into his personal studio, office and comfort-able apartment. This lifestyle does good to him, more than everafter the two years of fighting his disease and the very severepancreas surgery he underwent a couple of months back, whichhe barely survived.

REA BACK IN SHAPE

He came to Zagreb in a private jet almost two days earlier. Thereason was the day off he had after his concert in Bulgaria so hewanted to get some rest. He entered the “Pleso” Airport throughthe ordinary entrance not wanting to use the privileges of the VIPentrance. His concert in Zagreb can be categorized as for the en-tire family. In a little bit more than an hour and forty minutes,Chris Rea first played as a member of The Delmonts, and the re-maining hour and ten minutes were dedicated to the numeroushits from his rich career. The Delmonts are actually a band thatperforms instrumental music from the end of the 50s and begin-

dowsa. U sklopu aktualneturneje “The Return Of The Fabulous Hofner Bluenotes” ChrisRea promovira istoimenu muzi~ku knjigu.

On The Beach” i “Let’sDance”.

ning of the 60s, similar to the Shadows. On stage they transforminto The Fabulous Hofner Bluenotes. This transformation on stagewas made possible by powerful spotlights and the continuingchanges of the “The Delmonts” logo to “The Fabulous HofnerBluenotes” in the back of the stage. Along with the “The Returnof the Fabulous Hofner Bluenotes” tour, Chris Rea is promoting amusic book of the same title.

The story in the book is about an instrumental band from the50s of last century, The Delmonts that turned into the blues bandThe Fabulous Hofner Bluenotes in the 60s. The box contains abook of 80 pages, three CDs and a vinyl record.

ROCK FOR GROWING OLD WITH PLEASURE

During the concert Chris Rea moved from instrumental rockfrom the beginning of the 60s to blues and finally to his own great-est hits with new arrangements. But most of all there was muchof his known laid-back rock for growing old with joy.

“This tour is different because I now have a new band com-posed of great musicians that make me feel that I’m approach-ing my goal. In the musical sense, of course”, Chris Rea saidbefore his arrival to Zagreb. The 5th pavilion of the Zagreb Inter-national Fair blasted with classics like “Josefine”, in a reggaerhythm this time, “Easy Rider”, “Julia”, “Looking for the Sum-mer”, for the concert to then reach its finale with “Stainsby Girls”and an extended version of “The Road To Hell”. After the latter,Chris Rea made a three-minute break and without waiting for theaudience to scream for more, he and his band came back onstage and performed “On the Beach” and “Let’s Dance”. Thewhite lights that followed let the audience know that there was-n’t going to be another encore.

A DIFFERENT GUITAR FOR EACH SONG

It was strange but the well-trained Zagreb audience didn’t com-plain much about only an hour and a half of performance for theprice of 240 kn. The audience was mostly middle-aged people, generally women that followed the concert without exaggeratedemotional spillovers. There was no room for disappointmentthough, because Rea lost no time on unnecessary guitar tuningsor song announcements. He changed guitars before each song, handed over by a technician from his right.

He spoke shortly to the audience, on two occasions. He said“hello” at the beginning of his performance, and asked them tosing to the chorus of “On the Beach” when the concert wasreaching its end. As the reaction of the present wasn’t too fulfilling,he just said: “You are rubbish”, and continued uncaringly.

Chris Rea made a come-back after surviving a difficult sur-gery a few years ago, but he rarely talks to the media. He onlygave two interviews during the current European tour. In the onegiven to Media Servis he talked about his ex-Yugoslavian roots. Heis Italian by father and Irish by mother. He has both Italian andSlavic roots because his Italian ancestors were Slavic gypsiesthat took care of the land of rich Italian upper classes. They arethe ones from whom Chris inherited his sensibility and romantictouch. He knows Croatia mostly through football and says theyare good in it. Here are several details from his biography. Reawas born on March 4, 1951. He has sold 30 million records dur-

pretjeranih izljeva emocija.

On je jedan od najrespektabilnijih pjeva~a i gitarista u Velikoj Bri-taniji, autor hitova „On Te Beach“, „Road To Hell“, „Blue Caffe“,„Josephine“ i mnogih drugih.

Chris Reane krije svoju privr`enost opusima Vana Morrisona, Elvisa Co-stella, Bruce Springsteena, Joe Walsha , Rya Coodera i naro~itooca laid-backa J.J.Calea.

ing his career. He is one of the most respectable singers and gui-tar players in Great Britain, the author of the hits „On The Beach“,„Road To Hell“, „Blue Café“, „Josephine“ and many others. It isinteresting that Chris Rea performed before Queen on the well-known tour “Magic” from 1987 and 1988. Rea is also an actorand he played a part in a movie from 1999 called “Parting Shots”and acted side by side with John Cleese and Bob Hoskins.

MAJORITY OF SONGS DEDICATED TO HIS WIFE

Ironically, he played a man with only six weeks left to live, whodecides to get rid of all people that had done him any harm. ChrisRea is not a typical showman. He cannot stand the rules of show-business, meaning that he cannot be seen on places to whichregular stars come. Yet, his cultural status is growing. He uses hisstable family situation as a source of energy and inspiration forhis songs, and most of them are dedicated to his wife Joana, withwhom he has two daughters – Josephine and Julia, which werealso inspiration for the songs that carry their names. There is afamous quote by him: “You try hard to record an ordinary song forthe radio to help the sale of the album, but once the song be-comes popular everybody forgets about the album.”

He once admitted that a great role in his love for music wasplayed by Mark Knopfler and The Dire Straits. Chris Rea and theDire Straits started their career in 1978 but, while the Straits be-came one of the most popular groups with their first album, Rea’sfame had to wait until the end of the 80s and beginning of the90s. He started his music career quite late, and the fame andpopularity came even later. In 1976 he was proclaimed one of thegreatest hopes of English rock by the journalists of the “MelodyMaker”. His music is a European view of rhythm and blues. ChrisRea does not hide his respect for the work of Van Morrison, ElvisCostello, Bruce Springsteen,Joe Walsh, Rya Cooder, andparticularly for the father oflaid-back rock, J.J.Cale. Healso recognizes that he fre-quently has a problem withold blues guitars that cannothandle modern production orthe many lights on stage, sothey make funny sounds. Tomake a long story short, itwas a pleasure to grow olderduring that hour and a halfwith the music of an artistthat got to Zagreb thanks tothe concert agency “Nota”.
