NAPLAN Online Our students participated in a practice NAPLAN test to get ready for the online version of NAPLAN that will be conducted in Term 2. NAPLAN is one of the tools we use at Billabong High School to assess and review our practice in literacy and numeracy. Consequently, it is important that we ensure that students have the best opportunity to demonstrate their learning to us. Students used this time to familiarise themselves with the functionality of the test and the online tools. Due to Ms Tooney and Ms Murdoch’s excellent coordination and teaching, I can confidently say we are ready. Year 12 excursion Our students set off today to travel to Sydney and explore an amazing number of venues and experiences. This is the first time I have seen a Senior excursion structured in this way. I am impressed with the way students are provided with unique opportunities linked to their studies. Thanks to Mrs Anna Ferguson who has tirelessly planned this excursion over many months. Page 1 Thanks also to Mrs Taylor, Mrs Squire, Mr Duke and Mr Lawson who have enthusiastically taken on the extra responsibilities of taking students on excursion. Term 1 Wrap up This is my last week at Billabong High School as Relieving Principal. I have been working closely with Mr Wawszkowicz to ensure he has all the information to return from leave and lead the school. Meanwhile, I want to thank every parent, staff member and student for the way that you have welcomed me into your community. I have enjoyed learning about and being part of your community for a short time. Culcairn and its surrounding towns are in a unique position with enormous potential for the future. I encourage you to keep placing young people at the centre to develop future growth in learning, employment and life. Duke of Edinburgh Training WalkLast Wednesday morning 18 Year 9 and 10 students walked along the Back Henty Road to prepare for their Adventurous Journey camp in May. 10 kilos had to be carried by each student and they showed team building and observation skills. A note for the May camp will be given out early next term. Students have been asked to start preparing equipment by checking they have, or can borrow, a backpack with waist straps, a sleeping bag, a small torch (head one preferable) and a tent to share between two-three students. ANZAC Day Our school will hold an ANZAC Day presentation tomorrow. It will be part of a whole school assembly starting at 10:15am and its purpose is to raise awareness and encourage students to attend ANZAC Day ceremonies in their local town during the holidays. Our presentation will be led by Year 9 History students and focus on the role and contribution of nurses during war.

Gear Up for AgOn Thursday, 4 April, the junior elective Agricultural class and the Year 11 Primary Industries class spent 3 hours learning all about health and safety issues and management of these issues facing people working (and sometimes living) in this industry. The National Centre for Farmers Health delivered the very informative, encouraging and interactive workshop. A big thank you to the Rural Bank and Henty Community Bank for sponsorship of the program. Each student went home with a full kit of PPE they can use when working in the agricultural industry now or in the future. Billabong Bowlers progress to the third round of Regional Competition.Billabong travelled to Corowa last Tuesday to play against the winner of the Round 2 game between Murray High and Corowa High. These two schools had a see-sawing match with Corowa coming out winners with the narrowest of margins 13-12.In our match against Corowa we jumped out to an early lead and then had to fight off a strong revival, eventually winning 17-10.

Max Davis is new to the school team but he filled the important role of ‘lead‘ with style. He has a great action, as can be seen in the photo. Veteran Sam Harrison skipped well as usual, showing calmness when under the pump towards the end of the game. Most valuable player (as voted by coach, assistant coach Bill and Corowa members) was Blake Roulston, who bowled at a high level for the entire match.Well done, our next game is likely to be against a western Riverina team.Coach Year 12 Fundraising raffle winners Congratulations to Tom Martin who won first prize in the Easter raffle. Second place went to Rachael Galvin and third to May Gooda. Other prize winners were: Bailey Collis, Helen Moses, Tajh Lieschke, Tarnee Wilson, Cindy Wardius, Bryan Bridgett, Chilli Bergic, Cameron Lyons, Debbie Mulloy, Kaylee Bahr, Carolyn Scott, Mrs Shiels and Kerry Klemke. Thanks also to Mrs Morgan and Year 12 who have done an amazing job with the raffle.

Anti Bullying Ambassador TrainingVolunteers from Years 7 & 8 will commence their Anti Bullying Ambassador Training tomorrow, using a program called Bully Stoppers, developed by the Victorian Education Department. Students will learn about issues relating to bullying and cyber bullying including: • Bystander behaviour • Lying and pretending in relationships and friendships• Self-respect and respect for others • Acceptance of difference and diversityThrough exploring a range of bullying scenarios, students will have the opportunity to discuss and clarify their own values and ethical positions in relation to their presence and participation in the real and online worlds.
