The problem
When air mist cooling beco-mes necessary for a billet orbloom caster flat jet nozzlesmay not always be the bestchoice. This is especiallytrue where the formation ofHalfway Cracks is experien-ced.
This type of cracks haveshown to be caused by re-heating of the surface of thestrand after it has passedthe sharp heat extractionzone beneath a spray jet.During this reheating pro-cess the surface expandsand imposes a tensile strainon the interior, hotter andhence weaker regions of thesolid shell which then cancrack. The use of flat jetnozzles intensifies this ef-fect. Full cone nozzles pro-vide a homogenious coolingover an extended surfacearea.
These two spray patternsare the standard for singlefluid water secondary coo-ling systems, however therehas unfortunately not beenan adequate version usingair mist. Common full coneair mist nozzles show quiteunstable spray performan-ces, very high air consump-tions and a tendency to clogvery easily.
The solution
BilletCooler full or oval coneair mist nozzles. With thisnew nozzle generation it isnow possible to utilise airmist cooling also in billetand bloom casters as effec-tively as in slab casters.
The application
- Billet and bloom castersfor higher steel gradessuch as stainless steels,special spring steel, tirecord steels etc. requiremore sophisticatedcooling systems withhigher turn down ratiosand often smaller flowrates than hydraulic waternozzles can offer.- Narrow face cooling in slabcasters in the foot roll / topzone segment.- Wide face cooling in slabcasters with support gridsin the top zone below themould.

Nominal standard spray anglesare 60° x 30°, 90° x 30° and 90°x 45° (spray width x spraythickness).
Free passages approximatelythree times larger than beforemakes the BilletCooler a realnon clogging nozzle.
The compact block design al-lows mounting either onhorizontal spray rings but alsoon vertical nozzle headers.A turn down ratio as wide as1 : 10 is standard at water pres-sures between 0,5 (1,0) and 7bar at 2 bar air constant.
