Secondo i dati elaborati dall’isti-tuto econometrico internazio-

It’s not often that a production process manages a mention in

the main news programmes on national TV. But 3D printing has. The easily memorable term has ensured that a long-known pro-cess is achieving celebrity status and is suddenly being intensively discussed throughout the country as a revolution in manufacturing.

“The prediction that everyone will be producing his own spare part on his 3D printer at home has meanwhile proved largely erro-neous,” says Dr. Wilfried Schäfer, Executive Director at the METAV’s organiser VDW (German Machine Tool Builders’ Association) in Frankfurt am Main.

Rather, he adds, the discussion now centres on the adoption of 3D printing or additive manufac-turing (AM), as the professionals

call it, in an industrial-scale series (or at least small-series) produc-tion operation. Away from the rapid prototyping of the 1990s through rapid tooling to rapid manufacturing – this is how the present-day status of develop-ment work can be described.

“Power your business”This theme is being addressed with a new concept adopted by the METAV, 19th International Exhibi-tion for Metalworking Technolo-gies in Düsseldorf. Under the mot-to of “Power your Business”, from 23 to 27 February 2016 in the Addi-tive Manufacturing Area it will be showcasing the entire bandwidth of additive processes, materials and service capabilities themed around 3D printing. The METAV is thus expanding and supplement-ing its presentation of production

technology for all sectors, par-ticularly the manufacture of metal components, for mechanical engi-neering, aircraft, automobile and tool manufacturing, and medical technology.

Hybrid conceptsAdditive manufacturing is in-termeshed as a production pro-cess with other key elements in the metalworking value creation chain, chief among them CAD and simulation, reworking, production metrology and quality assurance. Besides AM systems pure and sim-ple, hybrid concepts are also being created, which combine AM pro-

cesses with traditional machining. “This is for many users a very inter-esting solutional approach,” says Wilfried Schäfer from the VDW. The advantages of additive manu-facturing are obvious.

New design ideasFirstly, new design ideas and product concepts with new func-tions now become possible, be-cause highly complex geometries are feasible, which with conven-tional processes have hitherto proved impossible or prohibitively costly to manufacture. Secondly, efficiency gains are achieved in terms of time and material con-

sumption. Functions can now be integrated directly in a single production step. This is also an attractive option for component functionality in terms of material optimisation. Additive manufac-turing is therefore already playing a significant role in lightweight construction of aircraft and auto-mobile parts particularly.

Thirdly, the manufacturer can re-sponsively meet individual cus-tomers’ wishes – provided the user concerned possesses the requisite experience. The METAV accordingly provides an ideal plat-form for discussing the challenges with all the parties involved.

Industry 4.0 aims to develop in-dustrial machinery with built-in

intelligence based on smart self-monitoring functions. Research-ers have now come a step closer to the ideal of a self-maintaining machine. A technology developed as part of the iMAIN project pro-vides real-time online monitoring of unprecedented quality.

Metal forming machines have to withstand considerable forces and yet remain in operation for a long time. When cold forming parts for automobiles, washing machines, refrigerators and the like, the ex-erted pressure can easily amount to several thousand metric tons.

This operation has to be repeated hundreds of thousands of times in the complete lifetime of a ma-chine. If the machine fails, it can cause substantial damage. Worse still, because the machine is usual-ly integrated in a series of produc-tion steps, the failure can cause the entire production process to come to a stand-still. Depending on the extent of the damage, the repairs could take up to a month – accompanied by a loss of reve-nues in the six-digit region.

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology (IWU) in Chemnitz aim to change this situ-

ation. In the future, the machines themselves will be capable of de-tecting problems and predicting failures. As part of the EU-spon-sored iMAIN project, the scientists have developed a prototype of an information-based predictive maintenance system that enables operators to determine when a component or entire plant is likely

to fail. The distinctive feature of this technology is its use of virtual sensors.

These receive input both from computer-simulated models of the machine and from real sen-sors that provide information on the strain occurring in individual components. “Using mathemati-

cal models and a minimum of ac-tually installed, real sensors, it is possible to realistically simulate strain scenarios for the entire machine in real time. This in turn provides the basis for an entirely new and innovative approach to predictive maintenance,” says Markus Wabner of Fraunhofer IWU.

Based on exhibitor sales and current plans, IMTS – The International Ma-nufacturing Technology Show 2016 is expected to be one of the largest in show history with even more to offer visi-tors. The show will be held September 12-17, 2016, at Chicago’s Mc-Cormick Place. Registra-tion will open on Febru-ary 1, 2016.

Early results on participating exhibitors and exhibi-tor floor square footage contracted for IMTS 2016 are both ahead of the IMTS 2014 pace at 1,382 exhi-bitors and 1.256 million net square feet (22 per cent increase and 8 per cent increase, respectively).

“After the largest IMTS in more than a decade in 2014, the IMTS 2016 show is building to be even stronger. IMTS 2016 will expand to five halls of McCormick Place with the addition of Hall C in the North Building. It is very exciting to see the con-tinued interest and real growth in manufacturing in the United States,” said Peter R. Eelman, Vice President – Exhibitions & Communications at AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology, which produces and owns IMTS. “The show is ex-pecting more than 100,000 visitors from 112 coun-tries who will come to gather ideas and see new technologies in action. IMTS is the place where in-novation thrives.”

Detecting the gapTest environment for IT security in industrial production

Production facilities and com-ponents of Industry 4.0 are

linked to the Internet, networked with each other, and thus open to attack. Using an IT security labo-ratory, Fraunhofer researchers offer a test environment in order to simulate attacks on this net-work and to detect any gaps.

“IT security in industrial produc-tion must take into account en-tirely different framework condi-tions that do not exist accordingly in Office IT,” says Birger Krägelin, project manager at IOSB’s IT Se-curity Laboratory. The control of production facilities entails real time requirements that make changes to the systems difficult. Downloading available software patches onto the systems and installing surveillance software, malware scanners, and antivirus programs influence the stabil-

ity of meticulously coordinated processes. By the same token, production processes affect con-ditions when updates can be real-ized. Firewalls within the network and encrypted connection be-tween systems can diminish real-time conditions.

“For example, it is possible that the built-in of known security measures from the office envi-ronment can delay the dispatch of messages between computers. That can lead to conveyor belts running slower, valves or outlets closing with a delay, light barriers are triggered incorrectly, the ro-tational speed of motors increas-es, or control components break down,” Krägelin explains. Even the relatively long usage period of hardware and software in produc-tion is markedly different from other areas where IT is deployed.

In order to find and establish ap-propriate IT security mechanisms for the production environment, the research team of specialists in automation technology and IT security equipped the laboratory accordingly.

Various configurationsIt features its own model fac-tory with real automation com-ponents that control a simulat-ed production facility, complete with conveyor belts, electric mo-tors, robots, and lifting equip-ment. All network levels of a factory are equipped with typi-cal components, including fire-walls, circuits, and components for wireless parts. Having its own private cloud means it is possible for the IOSB experts to flexibly arrange various configurations and set up the model factory for

a variety of scenarios. Companies can use the laboratory so they can consult on the planning and operational launch of secure in-dustrial network structures. In

addition, they benefit from the know-how of the IOSB experts when it comes to the analysis of their already existing network and components.

VISIT US AT THE EMO, HALL 11, STAND G31.

Today’s 5-axis multi-tasking machining center designs are many customers’ first choice when flexibility is a major decision factor. They are replacing advanced 4-axis machines rapidly in acceptance. Certainly for good reasons, this newest breed of 5-axis multi- tasking machines are adding additional chip cutting tasks to their machining repertoire and that with competitive productivity. While the classic machining center designs expand drilling, milling, tapping, and boring by integrating the use of attachment

tools, like for static turning operations to achieve more flexibility, the typical full featured, demanding turning operations are a large technology gap.

With table speeds up to 600 rpm, integral seal systems’ contact areas cause rising temperatures while suffering from ongoing, built-in wear from friction. The BW experts invented a contact free rotary sealing system for high speeds. Proven by extensive in house durability tests, today this is a well proven standard delivery for all BW-torque tables.

Also specific attention is required to the overall load distribution, fast rotating parts exert on the table system. The MCT-series features integrated balancing sensors which measure the forces and display these to the operator at the CNC control with data for correction measures. This display specifies location and size of the counterweights to the operator. After a part/pallet unit is loaded and securely clamped to the machine’s table, a balancing cycle is automatically performed at 80 rpm. A combination of seized weights are added to offset for balance.

To be involved earlierINGRESS to ensure industry’s involvement in EU standards

The INGRESS (INdustry GRoup on European Standardisa-

tion Strategy) platform has been launched by its 16 founding Euro-pean industry associations. The multi-stakeholder platform aims at facilitating the representation and advocacy of industry interests groups on European standardi-sation policy matters, given that industry is the main contributor (funding 95 per cent of standards’ development costs) and user of Eu-ropean standards.

Regulation EU 1025/2012 on Euro-pean standardisation grants the legal basis for the European Com-mission to request the three Eu-ropean standardisation organisa-tions – CEN, CENELEC and ETSI – to develop standards which have the potential to support EU legislation and policies, provided that they are used by interested stakeholders. It

also provides the status of observ-er to four categories of stakehold-ers in the regulatory Committee on Standards (CoS). The CoS is re-sponsible for taking implementing decisions, such as on new stand-ardisation requests, implementa-tion guidance or discussions on the possible review of the Regulation. Unfortunately, industry’s partici-pation in this Committee was not foreseen by the European regula-tor.

One of INGRESS’ primary objec-tives is to be recognised by the European Commission as a rel-evant stakeholder to participate, as an observer, in the Committee on Standards (CoS). As European standards are voluntarily used by companies to primarily support their needs, it is necessary to en-sure that the European Commis-sion’s standardisation requests will

be equally attractive to industry ex-perts who participate in the stand-ards’ development process and, eventually, offer the best chances to a broader uptake of harmonised standards by companies. “The Eu-ropean Commission’s standardisa-tion requests could have a positive or negative impact on European industries, which are one of the main drivers of investment, growth and jobs within Europe,” said Filip Geerts, CECIMO Director General.

“Harmonised standards have been one of the great success stories which helped Europe’s internal market to take off and develop. But these standards must always be relevant to manufacturing com-panies whose markets both in Eu-rope and worldwide depend on them. Industrial policy, including standardisation policy, matters to keep or even reinforce competitive

edge on advanced manufacturing sectors like machine tools. Our in-dustry is heavily contributing to the standardisation process. The issues of our sector are mainly addressed

by CEN TC 143 (Machine Tools – Safety), however we would like to be involved also in earlier stages not only when the technical work starts.”

Due to their improved proper-ties compared to traditional metals or polymers, composites are promising materials for use in several technologically advan-ced products. The main focus of the project THERMACO lies on heat evacuation applications in fields such as power microelec-tronics, e-mobility or (renewab-le) energy generation as well as highest performance combusti-on engines.

The ever – growing demand for heat evacuation applications is motivating today’s suppliers to come up with better and better heat conductive materials. Most of these products who were re-cently introduced to the mar-ket are carbon based materials aimed for extremely high heat conductivity (up to 2,000 W/mK).

THERMACO aims at providing manufacturing technologies for extremely efficient solutions in heat evacuation based on Alumi-nium Metal Matrix Composites (Al-MMC) with Carbon-based in-serts, like Graphene, applicable in many key technologies and products bolstering several sec-tors in Europe. The project is coordinated by Technische Uni-versität Chemnitz (Germany). Henning Zeidler, TU Chemnitz, will discuss “Smart Thermal conductive Al MMCs by casting (THERMACO)” at the CECIMO Eu-ropean Research and Innovation Conference on Friday, 9 October 2015, in Room Scorpio, Congress Center Stella Polare, EMO Milano Fairground.

Sharing laser expertiseProject LASHARE to accelerate technology transfer for small and medium-sized enterprises

Small and medium-sized enter-prises are often confronted

with the challenge of how to take new manufacturing processes, designed to facilitate efficient production, and make them ac-cessible to users in industry. This is an area where laser-based man-ufacturing processes have long led the way.

Precise definition of requirements

Yet, making these developments usable in industry, and opening up new markets, calls for a pre-cise definition of the technical requirements, as well as in-depth knowledge of the market, com-bined with networking between users, suppliers and research in-stitutes.

Co-funded by the EUThe LASHARE project, co-funded by the EU, has been launched to give more than 30 SMEs a help-ing hand, bringing together six of the most renowned European re-

search institutes under the lead-ership of the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology (ILT). The ambitious aim of the project is to enhance the competitiveness of the European laser industry by accelerating technology transfer.

Often, new laser-based manufac-turing techniques employ spe-cific, stand-alone solutions that

have previously only been dem-onstrated in a laboratory setting. In many cases these innovations are developed by small and me-dium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which possess the flexibility re-quired to find a speedy solution to the problem at hand. However, there are many possible pitfalls in getting from a lab-demonstrated solution to industrially robust

manufacturing equipment. It may be, for instance, that parts of the solution were developed at a time when the final specifications were still unknown or that the components are not sufficiently robust for everyday use.

As an SME’s business success re-lies heavily on a quick market launch, and securing user accept-

ance for its new technologies and products, LASHARE will help minimising the risks involved in this process and strengthen Eu-rope as a leading manufacturing location by helping innovative manufacturing technologies get to market more quickly.

LASHARE processed a competi-tive call for ten to twelve new Laser-based Equipment Assess-ments (LEAs) which focus on sen-sors and knowledge-based ICT systems in the area of complex manufacturing tasks. In response to this competitive call, LASHARE has received 20 proposals involv-ing suppliers, users and research partners from all over Europe. Ulrich Thombansen, Fraunhofer-Institut für Lasertechnik (ILT), will discuss “Laser-based Equip-ment Assessment moving tech-nologies from lab to application (LASHARE)” at the CECIMO Eu-ropean Research and Innovation Conference on Friday, 9 October 2015, in Room Scorpio, Congress Center Stella Polare, EMO Milano Fairground.

Great potentialNext Moulding Expo in May 2017

The next Moulding Expo will take place from 30 May until June, 2nd 2017 in Stuttgart. According to Flo-rian Niethammer, Senior Project Manager of Mould-ing Expo, Moulding Expo still has development po-tential in its international alignment. In 2015, 25 per cent of the exhibitors came from abroad, mainly from the neighbouring countries in Europe. This focus is to be retained. “We don’t want unreason-able growth, but we specifically want to open more markets together with our partners,” states the MEX Project Manager. Every new exhibitor must fit into the concept of the trade fair. “The quality of the products and services on offer thus remains the decisive criterion.”

In total, around 14,000 visitors (excluding synergy visitors from Control) travelled from 52 countries to Stuttgart to be at the première. The satisfaction of the exhibitors is also reflected in the visitor sur-vey. 70 per cent want to come back again and 83 per cent would recommend the trade fair. “The feed-back that the market needs a new trade fair with the right exhibitors caught our attention,” states Niet-hammer. “An important unique selling point of our event is the high number of tool, pattern and mould makers at 39 per cent. A concept which has proved a success and which we will continue to pursue.”

Advanced simulationCloud-based services for manufacturing SMEs

The importance of advanced simulation to the competitiveness of both large

and small companies is well established. However, the simulation of, for example, high-pressure gas cylinders or the mould-ing of plastics requires enormous comput-ing power and specialized software tools and services. Generally, large companies have easier access to advanced simulation than Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which are facing both technological hur-dles and financial challenges. This means that SMEs are often not able to take advan-tage of advanced simulation, even though it would clearly make them more competitive.

Fortissimo is a collaborative project that will enable European SMEs to be more competitive globally through the use of simulation services running on a High Per-formance Computing cloud infrastructure. The project is coordinated by the University of Edinburgh and involves partners includ-ing Manufacturing Companies, Application Developers, Domain Experts, IT Solution Providers and HPC Cloud Service Providers from 14 countries. The project is funded by the European Commission within the 7th Framework Programme.

“One-stop-shop”The goal of Fortissimo is to overcome this impasse through the provision of simulation services and tools running on a cloud infra-structure. A “one-stop-shop” will greatly simplify access to advanced simulation, par-ticularly to SMEs. This will make hardware, expertise, applications, visualisation and tools easily available and affordable on a

pay-per-use basis. In doing this Fortissimo will create and demonstrate a viable and sustainable commercial ecosystem.

Fortissimo will contribute to the increased competitiveness of European manufactur-ing industry through the innovative infra-structure that it will develop and test. It will also create commercial opportunities for European Independent Software Vendors and for service and High Performance Com-puting infrastructure providers, through the creation of a new market for their products and services. Claudino Arlandini, CINECA, will discuss “Enabling Manufacturing SMEs to benefit from simulations using cloud-based High Performance Computing (For-tissimo)” at the CECIMO European Research and Innovation Conference on Friday, 9 Oc-tober 2015, in Room Scorpio, Congress Cent-er Stella Polare, EMO Milano Fairground.

Di fianco all’albergo, in via Crocerossa, è sta-to inserito un monumento comme-

morativo progettato dall’architetto Aldo Rossi, dedicato a Sandro Per-tini.

Via Moronee Piazza Belgioioso

A colourful history makes Milan an exciting placeMany diff erent cultures made an impact on the city – the traces can still be seen today

Ancient Mediolanum is believed to have been founded by a Celtic tribe. Captured by the Romans in 222 BC, it flourished under the Roman Empire and became the residence of the emperors of the West in the 4th century AD. The city was sacked by the Huns un-der Attila in about 450 and was destroyed by the Goths in 539.

By the end of the 8th century the city had begun to prosper again. During the Middle Ages, Milan was governed by a number of archbishops, under whom the city had a certain degree of inde-pendence. The archbishops, how-ever, gradually lost their temporal power to the lower feudal nobil-ity, who transformed Milan into a

prosperous commune in the 11th century.

In 1162 Milan was razed by troops under Emperor Frederick I. The city recovered sufficiently to help se-cure the victory (1176) of the Lom-bard League over Frederick near Legnano. The victory opened a new period of prosperity. In 1277 a noble family, the Visconti, succeed-ed in wresting control of the city from the ruling Della Torre family; the Visconti ruled until 1447. The reign of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, 1st duke of Milan (1351-1402), was a particularly prosperous period and was regarded as a golden age.

In 1450 the Italian soldier Franc-esco Sforza seized power and

founded a line that remained firm-ly in control of Milan until 1500, when the city was conquered by France. The Sforzas continued to rule as puppets of successive

foreign invaders, including the French, the Swiss, and the Aus-trians. The Sforza line died out in 1535, and soon thereafter Mi-lan came under the rule of Spain.

Spain ruled until 1713, when the city was ceded to Austria by the terms of the Peace of Utrecht. Napoleon ousted the Austrians in 1796 and made Milan the capi-tal of the Cisalpine Repub-lic. Re-stored to Austria in 1815, Milan be-came a center of Italian patriotic resistance, and in 1848 it briefly expelled the Austrians.

In 1859, the Italians, aided by the French, freed Milan from Aus-trian control. In 1861 Milan joined the kingdom of Italy and subse-quently prospered. During World War II it was heavily bombed. In the postwar period Milan expe-rienced great commercial expan-sion and urban renewal. Popula-tion (2000 estimate) 1,301,000.
