COLLABORATION AT LJMU

Outline of the session

• BIM – what is it?

• BIM and education - the need to

change

• BIM and education - in practice at

LJMU

Page 3: Bim informed education and collaboration at ljmu

LJMU starting point

Is BIM a process?

Is BIM a technology?

Page 4: Bim informed education and collaboration at ljmu

Or is it?

In the words of Dave Philp (2013)

‘A language of collaboration to

reduce cost, reduce carbon and to

add value’

Page 5: Bim informed education and collaboration at ljmu

Does it matter what it is?

• Change is a purpose not an event

• We need to understand the purpose of

BIM and its outcomes and adapt

education to support industry.

NBS BIM Report 2013

• Almost 75% of

industry still not clear

what BIM is

• Only 35% of industry

confident with their

knowledge and skills

in relation to BIM

LJMU BIM Task Group

May 2012 a collaborative task group established across the

School of Built Environment and the following programmes:

– Architectural Technology

– Building Services Engineering

– Building Surveying

– Construction Management

– Civil Engineering

– Quantity Surveying

Collaboration

A new way of working??????

Page 10: Bim informed education and collaboration at ljmu

Do we need to change the way we

deliver, what we deliver and how we

assess?

Skill development

Level 4

CAD/Revit/Microsoft Project/Causeway -procurement(take off)

Level 5

CAD measure/ASTA/navisworks-clash detection,IES(thermal modelling)

Level 6

BIM Measure/navisworks/timeline/Cobie spread sheets?

Levels 4,5 and 6

COLLABORATION USING A 3D MODEL

BIM WORKSHOP

Page 13: Bim informed education and collaboration at ljmu

AIM

• New venture in the school to prepare students to work collaboratively in the “real world” utilising a 3 dimensional building model.

• The 2 day workshop provides students with an introduction to Building Information Modelling at Level 4.

Page 14: Bim informed education and collaboration at ljmu

Who are we collaborating with?

Students on the following programmes:

• Architectural Technology

• Building Services Engineering

• Civil Engineering

• Construction Management

• Quantity Surveying

Page 15: Bim informed education and collaboration at ljmu

What did we expect of students?

Task 1

Interrogate a 3D house model and outline the information that can be derived from the model explaining how this can be used collaboratively by each of the disciplines within the group.

Task 2

Extend the 3D house model by 12m2 in poor ground, revising the foundation type and calculating the impact on the programme, finishings cost and thermal modelling.

What next?

• Level 4(year 1) BIM workshop March 4 and 5 2014

• Use a more complex industrial 3D model to assess level 5 and level 6 students in 2014 -2015 academic year.
