University Fest By Deborah Gabay

1

On Saturday, August 29, Binghamton University had its annual University Fest where clubs all over campus had the opportunity to table and introduce new students to their organizations.

This year, Binghamton Circle K had the pleasure of introducing a number of new students to the club’s objectives and goals, and why choosing CKI has been a positive choice in many of its member’s lives. Set up right along the “spine”--a central pathway running through the heart of campus--members were hard at work drawing new students in and educating them on what our organization does.

In the case that new students did not know what exactly Circle K was, a large sign was made advertising Key Clubbers to come forward. Key Club is an organization that many of our

2

members were involved in in high school, and it shares many similarities to Circle K.

Our members also made sugar cookies to hand out to people stopping by the table, printed with the day and time of our first general interest meeting of the semester. Last but not least, students stopping by had the opportunity to ring the famous bell that our president John Tirino uses to mark the start of meetings.

A prospect that excited many people stopping by the table, it certainly made a mark amongst prospective members. At the conclusion of University Fest, Circle K had garnered over 100 people interested in coming to the first meeting.

I personally was very proud at watching our organization grow, and will continue to support any opportunities or efforts made to introduce more people to our club."

First General Interest Meeting

1

On September 3rd, Circle K had its first general interest meeting of the new school year. After a good amount of advertising on social media and University Fest, we had a great turn out. Many of the new members are former Key Clubbers, and it’s great to see that they are eager to continue their work of service as part of the K family. John Tirino, the new president, looked like a veteran as he welcomed all the new members, and told, of our big plans for this upcoming service year. Our club had an impressive year last year,

2

donating lots of money to various different charities, as well as retaining more members. Jerry Cimo, immediate past president and current District Secretary, also spoke at the meeting. We also played an icebreaker organized by Fellowship Committee Chair Deborah Gabay in order to break the ice between all the new faces. Overall, it was a great time filled with fun and Nirchi’s pizza. It was a great way to kick off the new school year.

Chenango Valley State Park Clean Up By Timothy Wong

1

On the 7th of September, a large group of fellow Circle K members decided to volunteer at the Chenango Valley State Park Cleanup. As a first time Circle K member and environmental science major, I was eager to do what I can to help the local community around Binghamton especially maintaining state parks.

We took several cars to get to the park, which was only a few minutes away, though we did lose one along the way, but eventually we were all there. At the park, we met the park director Mike who was nice enough to give us supplies such as rakes, clippers, and most importantly, bug spray. We mostly cleaned up weeds from the steps, swept away leaves on the trail and trimmed trees, but the gnats that followed around us were relentless.

Though I was unfamiliar with our fellow members at the time, the mutual aversion from the gnats was very bonding. It was after that; Mike came back with the bug

2

spray, which, besides water, was the most important item utilized.

Though we were supposed to clean up from 9am-12pm, we really finished cleaning the entrance and path in the first hour and a half, which was undoubtedly due to our combined teamwork as a whole. At the end, we were promised pizza, which took an extremely long time to wait and we were all eager to eat. Nevertheless, our patients rewarded us with two large pies, free chip bags and sodas.

Overall, it was a great way to spend a Monday morning, and at the end, I felt productive, more connected with my club members and I also got a free T-shirt.

Broome County Rescue Mission By Kester Francis

1

On a nice and sunny Saturday, I participated in my first service project for Binghamton Circle K. We were to go to Whitney Place in Broome County, a residence originally designed as an emergency housing center that was changed into a supportive housing for homeless men. Kora drove me, Christina and Elle to the building and we met with Michael Ross who oversees the programs that run at the home.

We were tasked with cleaning the building walls, doorframes and windows. With handy dandy magic erasers, glass cleaner and music provided by my playlist, we got to work giving the home a much needed cleaning.

Many of the residents were very thankful for us taking the time to clean their home and Michael even gave us “Freeze out homelessness” shirts. While it was fun

2

getting to know Elle, taking pictures and hearing Christina sing a bit, I would say the best part about going on this trip was at the end of the day, someone could easily have lost a job, home, or suffering from addiction or withdrawal to the point where functioning in society is a challenge, and now that person needs to live in a supportive home.

Cleaning up the place and making it feel new again would have changed that person’s perspective from “ugh, I have to live in an old building with other people…” to “Wow, this was not what I expected from a place like this! It looks like a home!” and to me, it gives me satisfaction that I was able to play a part improving the lives of other people in a community we all share.

Fundraiser By Paty Acipreste

1

Our first fundraiser for the year was held on a Wednesday night, in September while the weather was still bearable and having ice cream was a pleasure. As Fundraising Committee Chair, I had to take advantage of the fact that college students were still willing to go out for something cool and refreshing, so I contacted the manager of one of my favorite creameries. Coldstone Creamery was happy to help our non-profit organization.

From 6-9 pm they agreed to give us 15% of the proceeds from people that said they were there

2

for Circle K International. That’s when we spread the word out to the entire club and all our friends. We needed as many people as possible! This was a great way for new and old members to bond and interact. The timing was perfect since it was in the middle of the week and it distracted us from our academic lives.

I got there at peak time, the line was out the door, and everyone was having a great time. We stood in University Plaza spreading the word out to everyone who was going to Coldstone. In the end, we raised funds for our club and had some delicious topping filled ice cream!

Broome County Library By Michelle LeClair

1

As a new member to Circle K, I signed up for the first volunteer opportunity that I possibly could, which happened to be activities and reading at the Broome County Library.

The theme for the activities and reading were centered around Curious George, because the author H. A Reys birthday happened to be on the day of our service opportunity. Several members of Circle K read Curious George stories to a group of children. We had a great turn out in regards to attendance and participation for the event.

Kids enjoyed the stories and once finished were excited and eager to start the craft activity that we planned. The activity planned was creative and innovative. Each of the children was able to make and decorate a tie or a bow tie. Some of the girls got really innovative and decided to wear them as hair accessories. Though helping all of the kids create their ties was a blast, I definitely had one of those moments where I realized I made

2

some kid’s day. A young girl around four years of age

didn't want to wear a bow or bowtie, she really wanted a heart to wear as a necklace, in trying to make her aspirations possible and with the limited supplies we had, I helped the young girl create a heart cut out of paper which we then tied onto the string, allowing her to wear it as a necklace. The little girl walked out of the activity room with the biggest smile on her face.

The club helped to create great memories for all of the children who attended. This is a community service opportunity that I think would be great to do again in the spring semester with a different theme. This opportunity not only allowed for me to give back to the community here, but I also was able to meet and socialize with other members of Circle K. Overall a very successful project!

Service Project

1

Circle K had another productive and fun year at DLSSP! Located at Kamp Kiwanis many club members traveled to give their time to a great cause. We participated in service activities such as organizing the library, cleaning benches, raking leaves, cleaning up some of the trails, moving bikes and more.

The weekend was full of bright, sunny weather, which made the weekend events even more enjoyable than we all knew it would be! Both nights we spent at Kamp Kiwanis concluded with a fun bonfire where we roasted marshmallows and were able to meet tons of new people.

During the actual service projects each group had a different task to help prepare the camp for the winter. One of the highlights of the weekend, beside the club bonding in the cabins and fun car rides, was the fashion show. We showed off our Binghamton pride wearing all green and showing our talents. Just to highlight the fashion show if you

2

haven’t seen the video yet it included backflips, leapfrog, confetti, silly string, and all the fun and pride we have as Binghamton Circle K members.

At the conclusion of the fashion show they announced our club as the winner and we received the spirit bear for the second year in a row! However having won the bear the year prior and having seen the other clubs charisma at the fashion show we decided as a club to give the bear to NYU.

The last day was sad to say goodbye to the new people you had met but also exciting to be able to look at the camp and see all we had accomplished in just a weekend. It was a great weekend for Binghamton Circle K and with the announcement of the theme for New York Speaking, Murder Mystery, many members are excited for the next event we all get to participate in together!
