,fter attending a private school he received his medicaleducation at 1din#urgh' partly in the university and partlyin the e2tra- academical medical school4 Having received the licence of the !oyal College of+urgeons of 1din#urgh in %(5*4 ,s per the e2isting rules he was not allowed to sit for

university e2amination #ecause of his younger age '+o heattended the lectures of 6elpeau' ,ndral' 7ouis' and othersin Paris' graduated M4D4

He returned to 1din#urgh and passed his M4D4 e2amination

from the 1ding#urgh university on % ,ugust' %(8%4

They were very close to each other and used to dine together

MEDICAL PRACTISE CON0ERSION /

He settled in medical practise at# 7iverpool which was the

residence of his father4 Dr4 Drysdale was also practising in7iverpool and used to insist Dudgeon to ta$e interest inhomoeopathy4

Drysdale used to re<uest Dudgeon to translate articles from=erman to 1nglish and thus in Dudgeon/s words' @he learnt a good deal a#out the new system and gradually #ecame

On Drysdale/s advice he went to 6ienna and come in contact with

=erman homoeopaths decided to construct a monument ofHahnemann at Coethen4 since'dudgeon considered coethen a dull little town andHahnemann/s connections with it was purely accidental and

transitory ' he raised his voice against it4 >ltimately 7eip?ig wasdecided as the site of monument 4This ocassion was attended #y many important physicians anddeciples of Hahnemann4

He was instrumental in founding the Hahnemann hospital and+chool of Homoeopathy of #looms#urg s<uare'with which wasconnected the Hahnemann medical society' where eminenthomoeopaths were involved as teachers4 Dudgeon himself taughtTheory and practise of Homoeopathy4



!o#ert 1llis Dudgeon inventedthe +phygmograph4 In 1881 , Dudgeon introduced a new, highly portable

Sphygmograph. The sphygmograph was strapped to thewrist. The pulse at the wrist caused a metal strip to move astylus, transmitting a record of the pulse onto smoed paper.

!obert "llis Dudgeon#s instrument $uicly became popularsince it was compact and easy to use. The sphygmographtraces an undulating line, which represents a record of bloodpressure and pulse over time.

It was the most famous discovery. It was mildly opposed inthe beginings by allopaths but later on described andphotographed in most of the boos on physiology andpathology.

in the medical and lay periodical.;



CHARACTER /

"ven in his seventies he was :hale and hearty; and didhis professional wor withouy fatigue, played golf wholeday, once a wee, went for gouse shooting every year, inthe month of august for = wees and used to tae longswing every day. (e was very fond of shooting patridgesand pheasants.



DEMISE /

In the morning session of The 6ritish (omoeopathic /ongress on >uly,1, Dudgeon told his friends that he was troubled with a sinirritation which interferred with sleep and gave him a feeling ofgeneral illness. (e never left his house after this date. This trouble

developed into a abnormal form of pemphigus which undermined hisvital power and inspite of his mental faculties remaining unimpaired, hesan from weaness.

+t the age of 80 years on 8th september,1&4%, he passed away

peacefully without pain, without any complain and without anydisturbance.
