Hello! My name is Oliver the Owl and this
is my home, an old hole in the Argentina
Dry Pampas. Lets travel outside so I can
explain more about this wonderful
grassland to you.

As I said before, I live in the Argentina
Dry Pampas. The Dry Pampas are anexample of an ecosystem, a group of
both living organisms and nonliving
things interacting together.
The Dry Pampas ecosystem is an
example of a Temperate Grassland
biome. A biome is a grouping of
ecosystems where the climate, plants,
and animals are all similar.

As you can see, the Dry Pampas are not full of
big trees and woods. Unlike the Humid Pampas to the
East, it and other Temperate Grasslands do not receive
much rain. They are wetter than deserts but drier than
forests, so low grasses and shrubs thrive. savannas, often
confused with temperate grasslands, have taller grasses
and receive more water. Also, the temperature varies
wildly between the seasons.
The Dry Pampas are mostly all plains, and most
animals here either live on the grass or in burrows in the
ground like me. Although we dont get much rain here, therich soil helps to nourish the plants.

Our home is in danger. We have recovered from natural
disasters, but human activity is much more frightening.
Humans have created many farms and ranches on the land, destroying the habitats of my fellow animals! In fact,
Argentina has become the worlds third largest food producer.
Good plants called decreasers are killed by these humans,
and bad ones called increasers start to fill up the land along
with new plants called invaders!
When the humans farm, they use up all the rich minerals and
water. The amounts of important elements like Carbon,
Nitrogen, and Oxygen are dropping rapidly. We fear that
humans might even make the Dry Pampas a desert. Also, their
farming plays a big part in the dust storms, Pamperos, that I
told you about before.

But the effects that humans have on our ecosystem is much
larger. Human activity has resulted in something we call global
warming. They have made the area get hotter, and if it gets toohot, water will begin to leave faster. If water leaves faster, this
grassland will become a desert!
Or, more water may come down in the form of rain. If that
happens, trees will grow and the grassland will become a forest!
The big trees would block the little grasses and shrubs from
getting sunlight, and they could die.
But what does this mean? Remember that plants take in the
carbon dioxide we breathe out and make oxygen. If the plants
die, too much carbon dioxide, which contributes to global
warming, will be floating around and not enough oxygen.
If the grasslands lose too much water that they become a desert, plants will die and the same will happen!
