• Biofuel Definition

Biofuels are liquid or gaseous fuels primarily produced from biomass, and can be used to displace some fossil fuels. (the Bill & Melinda’s Gate foundation)

• Biofuel life cycleThe life cycle of biofuel ends in

distribution to the end user.

Biomass Sources in Pakistan Pakistan has numerous sources of biomass to produce heat and power generation. Main biomass sources :1.Agriculture residue2.Animal manure 3.Municipal wastes

Biomass Sources in Pakistan – Cont’d

• New market for biofuel :• Brassica, Pongamia pinnata & Ricinus communis are considered as plants that bear seeds

that can definitely produce BIODIESEL in Pakistan.• 10% of BIODIESEL replacement can save US$ 1 billion per annum.

New and existing biofuel markets Bioethanol production potential: The sugar Industry in Pakistan is the second largest after textile industry.

Pakistan’s bioethanol production has grown rapidly by 3 per cent in 2000, 7 per cent in 2001, 9 per cent in 2002 and 14 per cent in 2003.

Bioethanol is produced entirely from molasses.

The cost of producing bioethanol from sugarcane is substantially lower than that for other available sources.

The promotion of bioethanol presents a win-win scenario for Pakistan. The country incur an oil import bill of US$3.1 billion every year.

Export:

Pakistan presently exports over 160,000 tones of industrial alcohol and bioethanol, earning a little over US$100 million in foreign exchange.

Import:

Pakistan imported petroleum products worth US$3.1 billion in the 2006 fiscal year, which accounted for 85 per cent of the total oil consumption in the country.

A move towards indigenous fuel ethanol consumption would save the state substantial foreign exchange
