Highly respected, widely recognized — A UF Biomedical Sciences PhD Where do you want research to take you? Academia, government, industry?

The Biomedical Sciences PhD program at the University of Florida prepares students as experimentalists and scholars through highly interdisciplinary training. After the first year of study, students select from the following concentrations:

• Biochemistry and molecular biology

• Cancer biology

• Genetics• Immunology and microbiology• Molecular cell biology• Neuroscience• Physiology and pharmacology These concentrations reflect eight departments working collaboratively across the College of Medicine and the College of Dentistry at UF Health, the university’s academic health center.

Requirements

Research experience: Most applicants have a year or more of undergraduate research experience. Research experience is initially evaluated based on a personal statement and letters of recommendation.

A variety of undergraduate summer research opportunities are available through the UF College of Medicine.

GPA: Minimum 3.0 for all upper division (Junior/Senior) undergraduate work.

Course requirements: Successful completion of general biology and chemistry, including organic chemistry. Coursework in biochemistry is strongly encouraged.

GRE: Minimum combined average score of 300.

Gainesville — where nature and culture meet

Ready to experience a diverse community that embraces intellectual curiosity in the lab and the great outdoors? Looking to balance academic endeavors with a vibrant arts

and cultural scene? Gainesville is a dynamic intersection of activities, from exciting college athletics to numerous state parks.

Admitted students are appointed graduate research assistants, or GRAs, and granted a stipend and tuition waiver. 2016-2017 stipend = $28,277 GatorGradCare insurance provided.

Ten students from each cohort will receive the Grinter Award, an additional $2,000 for three academic years.

The College of Medicine supports the first two semesters of a GRA stipend. Beyond that, stipends are paid from other sources, usually research grants or one of several National Institute of Health training grants. Assistantships are renewed pending satisfactory progress in coursework and research.

The Office of Graduate Minority Programs coordinates the following opportunities for underrepresented minority students:

McKnight Doctoral Fellowship: Supports increased representation of African Americans and Hispanics in doctoral programs at Florida universities.

Eligibility: U.S. citizen, first year UF doctoral studentStipend = $13,430/year for tuition, fees and health insurance

McNair Graduate Assistantship Program: Provides a limited number of one-year research assistantships for doctoral students.

Eligibility: Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program participants in good standingStipend = $13,430/year for tuition, fees and health insurance

Historically Black Colleges and Universities – UF Pathway Project: Identifies graduate students at historically black colleges and universities as strong candidates for doctoral work at UF. Eligibility: Faculty selection at participating HBCU institution.

Benefits: Visits to meet with UF faculty, graduate coordinators and current students; potential summer research opportunities; funding packages established by UF departments.
