Overall, it was an amazing day and I personally learned more. This day has boosted my confidence more in teamwork and stepping up to be leader. I am truly grateful that this day was planned and would be glad if the school planned it again for next year. Year 9 students were truly inspired by the NHS sponsored Bio-Science extended- curriculum day which took place in October. Intensely practical, delivered by a specialist teacher, students engaged in the investigations of several ‘patients’ presenting with different clinical symptoms.

The place to be……..

Working in small teams, students used the fundamentals of Osteo-Physiology, Microbiology, Dentistry and Respiratory-Physiology in their analysis. In addition to the development of teamwork, independent enquiry and decision-making the day helped to promote consideration of the NHS (the largest employer in the UK) as a potential future career pathway.

Bioscience Review by Sofia-Ellie Croft Year 9 It was an extremely good day to experience. We got to talk about various jobs in the NHS, such as a paediatrician or a phlebotomist. All together as a group, we came up with over forty nine different jobs. We also had the opportunity to treat four different out-patients at five different stations. At one station we had to check the patients PH level and glucose. Next we had to check if they had osteoporosis by checking the volume of the vertebrae. The third station we had to check if they had asthma or not. We then had to move on to dentistry. Finally we then had to see if they had any allergies.

Overall, it was an amazing day and I personally learned more. This day has boosted my confidence more in teamwork and stepping up to be leader. I am truly grateful that this day was planned and would be glad if the school planned it again for next year.

Year 9 students were truly inspired by the NHS sponsored Bio-Science extended-curriculum day which took place in October.

THE PLACE TO BE….IN THE SIXTH FORM

The Hugh Christie Sixth Form have had a very busy start to their academic year.

We are delighted to welcome a new cohort of Year 12 students including a number who have joined us from other schools.

We have also launched the International Baccalaureate Career Pathway for the first time this September, providing students with the opportunity to blend academic courses with professional qualifications.

Our senior students have also been appointed: Holly Gordon, Dominic Marchese and Sam Wolvey. Supported by their deputies and prefects, the senior students have already contributed to a number of open events and worked with the younger Student Leaders to identify priorities for this year.

The students have agreed to support the RSPCA with a non-uniform day on the 17th November. They will also use half

the funds to support the purchase of new Sports equipment.

Part of our Sixth Form involves learning about becoming

responsibly citizens. All students recently attended a workshop on road safety. The License to Kill event aims to raise awareness amongst teenagers of the need to drive responsibly when they pass their test and the potential impact on their lives, and others, if they do not.

Another strength of the Sixth Form is the range of social events that are available. Just before half term, students had the opportunity to spend the day at Thorpe Park to participate in their annual ‘Fright Night’ experience.

An Open Evening takes place on Wednesday 29th November for all Year 11 students to explore more about the Sixth Form at Hugh Christie. You will have the opportunity to discuss the courses available as well as to hear from the current Sixth Form about their experiences.

Ali Sparkes visited Hugh Christie for the fourth time and thoroughly entertained our Year 7 students with her stories of being on TV quiz shows and reading extracts from her book " Carjacked". Ali continues to be an inspiration to our students who were queuing up for her to sign their copies of her books. Ali is one of the four regular authors who visit the school every year.

ALI SPARKES’ VISIT 2017

Students in Year 8 recently worked with Gleeds, a leading global property and construction consultancy. Students took part in a refurbishment project, putting their creativity skills to good use. Students also developed skills in team work, presentation and critical thinking as well as learning about possible future careers in the construction industry.

" Letters from the Lighthouse" by Emma Carroll.

If you have read " Goodnight Mister Tom" and enjoyed it, this

book could be for you. It is based in February, 1941. After

months of bombing raids in London, twelve-year-old Olive

Bradshaw and her little brother Cliff are evacuated to the

Devon coast. The only person with two spare beds is Mr Ephra-

im, the local lighthouse keeper. But he's not used to company

and he certainly doesn't want any evacuees.

CONSTRUCTING A FUTURE

Thirty boys from Years 9-11 went on a very successful football tour to Paris in conjunction with Paris St. Germain Football Club. Taking in sights of Paris from the Montparnasse Tower, shopping at the PSG Megastore, running into the PSG first team including Neymar and a tour of the Stade de France all contributed to a very memorable trip for everyone.

Football was the main focus and having two excel-lent sessions of coaching from PSG Academy coaches at the training complex and an indoor cen-tre put the boys through their paces in build up to fixtures against local opposition. First match was against a very strong team in OSC Elancourt which unfortunately both our teams lost. Our second and final matches were against Pitray-Olier when our U14 team drew 2-2 and our U16 team came out 10-1 winders in an emphatic performance with seven goals being scored by captain Harry Hudson. Well done to all the boys who participated and hopefully the experiences will stay with them for a long time.

Thank you to Mr Ions, Mr C Barker and Mr Blinkhorn for accompanying the boys on this trip.
