The East of England:

Contributes 25% of UK R&D spend –over three times the national average

Part of the Greater South East – the10th largest economy in the world

Home to London Stansted – with moredaily flights to Europe than any otherairport worldwide

The East of England is home to 50% of the entire UK biotechindustry and has one of the strongest drug pipelines in Europe. The region couples excellence in bioinformatics with a long historyin sequencing the human genome, triggering discoveries thatform the basis of global products and are revolutionisingpersonalised medicine. Key therapeutic areas include oncology;metabolic disorders; neuroscience; cardiovascular; infection andimmunity; women’s health and muscular skeletal disorders.

GROUNDBREAKING THERAPEUTICS

Antisoma – acquires promising early-stage cancer drug candidates fromacademic and commercial institutions and manages development, testingand trials to bring them to market.

Phytopharm – develops pharmaceutical products and functional foods frommedicinal plants; reducing development risk, cost and time to market.

Senexis – uses small-molecule drug development to revolutionise diagnosisand treatment of age-related diseases.

Vernalis – uses and develops fragment and structure-based drug discoverymethods to address novel targets in areas including cancer, neuropathicpain and diabetes.

Tap into our region’s R&DThe Cambridge Biomedical Campus – awarded Academic Health ScienceCentre status by The National Institute for Health Research, whichis leading a drive to make the UK’s National Health Service one of theleading biomedical research organisations in the world. The Campusis one of Europe’s leading research centres and offers an exceptionalenvironment for collaborative research and its translation, with currentoccupants including Cambridge University Hospitals, Universityof Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine; the Medical Research Counciland Cancer Research UK.

University of Essex – covering a broad range of medical and healthresearch in Biophysics and Molecular Medicine. Key research includesprotein structure and its application in the design of therapeutic agentsand the development of biophysical tools in molecular imaging andinteractions. The Ageing Research Group is developing new inhibitorsand imaging for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

University of Hertfordshire – the University’s Health and Human SciencesResearch Institute houses the School of Pharmacy which includesstate-of-the-art analytical chemistry, synthetic chemistry, solid dosageform manufacture and characterisation and sterile manufacturing facilitiesand a simulation centre. In addition, the Topical Drug Delivery Unit enablesleading-edge research in the development of dermal, ungual, airway andmucoadhesive drug delivery systems.

University of East Anglia (UEA) – UEA’s Biomedical and Clinical SciencesResearch Institute encourages cell biologists, immunologists, nutritionistsand epidemiologists to generate multidisciplinary research programmestudying infectious diseases and the role of diet in optimising health andhealthy ageing. UEA also houses a category 3 microbiology containmentBiomedical Research Centre and Clinical Trials Research Unit.

Be supported by our enterprisehubs and networksHealth and Life Sciences Enterprise Hubs – driving innovationby bringing knowledge-based industries together. The hubs includeBabraham Bioscience Technologies (biomedical); CardioThoracicBioIncubator (medical devices and healthcare); Colworth Park (food, health and wellness); BioPark (bioscience and health technology);Health Enterprise East (convergent technologies, healthcare and medicaldevices) and Norwich Research Park Enterprise (health, food, plantand microbial sciences).

ERBI – with 300 members, ERBI is one of Europe’s leading regionalbio industry associations. ERBI’s aim is to facilitate and accelerate thegrowth of biotech in the East of England through networking events, special interest groups, training, publications and partnering andmember promotion.
