Pasteur Institute of Iran (1920)
– A primary center for research on infectious diseases– A center for production of biological products, vaccines, and
serums.
• Biotechnology Department (1993)
– The goal is conducting biotechnology- related research
Research Activities:
– Molecular diagnostics: include molecular detection of prevalent genetic disorders and various infectious diseases.
– Recombinant DNA technology: includes development of recombinant vaccines and pharmaceutics.
Razi Vaccine & Serum Research Institute (1925)
– Razi is one of the oldest and most important applied R&D organization in Iran.
– Razi produces over 3 billion doses of 55 different biological products, including human and veterinary vaccines and also diagnostic antigens, at an annual value of about $105m.
– Razi has 28 different departments and employs 1250 staff, including 133 scientists.
- The institute uses locally produced fermenters for vaccine production.
– Razi has links to the WHO and is part of the UN health care infrastructure.
