The following six words cannot be emphasized enough: nobody does art quite like Celebrity. With the firm belief that art—through its beauty and interpretation of the world we live in—has the power to enrich a voyage of inspiration, the cruise line has created museum-quality collections on board each ship. It’s a passion. It’s a spirituality. It’s an identity. It’s a cultivation of taste and an encouragement of genius. It’s an endeavor that is unparalleled in the industry, and it represents years of the cruise line’s investment in emerging and established artists. Today, Celebrity is one of the world’s largest owners of contemporary art.

Celebrity Reflection, like the Solstice Class ships before her, is a museum at sea. The cruise line doesn’t display art simply for the sake of displaying art. The works across the ship were either specifically commissioned or selected to enhance the guest experience. Celebrity works with International Corporate Art (ICArt), which has offices in Oslo, London, and Miami, to curate its art collections across the fleet, showcasing the best in modern and contemporary artworks in a variety of mediums.

The first step in creating a ship’s art collection is selecting a theme— a concept inspired by the name and essence of the ship. That creates the curatorial direction—a narrative, a story—that unites the entire onboard collection. The team at ICart works with the ships’ architects to identify the locations where art will be placed, and then travel the world to source or commission works. The result is a rich experience that has become one of the cruise line’s signatures, and one that adds an elegance to the cruising experience.

The sophisticated character and modern design of Reflection defines the framework for her art collection. The theme, “The Seductiveness of a Reflection,” investigates the effect of art via the physical properties of reflective materials, as well as the more subtle act of reflection.

The range of artwork on board includes significant works by world-renowned artists working in Expressionist, Pop, and Minimalist tendencies, as well as pieces by young and emerging artists exploring new and fresh concepts of contemporary culture and society. Reflection’s collection

is comprised of approximately 136 new acquisitions from international mid-career and emerging artists, as well as 115 standout artworks selected from the Celebrity Art Collection on ships such as Mercury, Summit, Constellation, and Infinity. The pieces culled from these ships embrace the curatorial direction on Reflection.

Some of the more recognizable names on board include Robert Rauschenberg, John Baldessari, Jeff Koons, Kiki Smith, and John McCracken. Their hugely influential works are complemented by pieces by lesser-known artists, creating both a brilliant comparison and fresh illumination.

In the Ensemble Lounge, Herbert Hamak’s pigment works (imported from Celebrity Summit) and Cristina Lei Rodriguez’s collage-like photographs contrast sharply in formal and visual aesthetics, yet at the same time, harmoniously interact.

One of the ship’s most striking works is suspended above the Grand Foyer: a monumental installation of two trees. One is alive and floats in the center of the space, while the other, metallic and electric, hangs directly underneath. A metallic pot with

roots and branches is the juncture that connects the two, allowing them to reflect upon themselves. This stunning sculptural work by Bert Rodriguez, specifically engineered and created for Reflection, is both engaging and dazzling with its physical and conceptual beauty.

In the dining area, a site-specific commissioned gallery displays species by a variety of artists, creating a luxuriant and seductive entryway to the specialty-restaurant corridor. Not only have the lateral walls and spaces been “activated” by artwork, but the flooring has also been incorporated to further enhance the viewer’s total experience. Mural-sized photographs by Albano Afonso surround the space with an embracing forest that alludes to paradise. Together with a glass-box piece by Anthony James, these play harmoniously with arboreal elements repeated infinitely on a mirrored surface. A tree-trunk bench by Dutch designer Jurgen Bay allows for a moment of seated reflection before following the grassy pathway of floor tiles that lead to and from the dining room.

Navares are examples of nature’s sensual and simple beauty. Navares’ work explores the depiction of women across many cultures and traditions, which can be discerned here in a subtle and almost secret manner.

While enjoying the pool, guests will soak in the wonderfully colorful and energetic abstract pieces by Chicago-based artist Dzine. His work explores the intersection of luxury and the everyday, where desire, identity, and beauty meticulously collide in kaleidoscopic colors. His mural is a mashup of visual references, mixing street culture, the Baroque, and the psychedelic, all with a bit of bling on top. His playful style ranks among the most unique in American contemporary art today.

The brilliant combination of works that make up the aft and forward stairs provide an artful experience in and of itself. Following the “reflective” direction, the artworks on the aft stairs were selected for their silver tones, the forward stairs pieces for their gold. Each deck is enhanced by a work of art that not only adheres to this tonal thread, but also reinforces the “seductiveness of a reflection” in a unique and captivating way.
