On the site of Alberta’s first reclaimed oil sands tailings pond, Bird Construction was contracted by Suncor Energy to construct an observation platform to showcase Suncor’s commitment to the environment. Renamed Wapisiw Lookout, the deck design combines contemporary and traditional Aboriginal materials. The cedar wood deck is complemented by a wind-screen built of natural peeled pine fastened by rope while the architectural wall supports cantilevered stairs that lead to an upper observation lookout enclosed by a glass

and stainless steel handrail. The deck is supported with steel screw piles and sheltered by two large rolled steel arches which carry a tensile fabric canopy.

Over the years, Bird has successfully completed a long list of projects for Suncor including a number of monumental civil works, mine services buildings, workforce housing, administrative and process facilities. Subsequently, Bird was quick to commit to Suncor’s request to assist in the design and complete construction of this high profile project in time for the formal unveiling.

While the inclusion in the Bird 25 Year Club is a milestone the firm celebrates with much fanfare, the company recently honoured one man’s ability to do it twice. In September, Bird staff from across the country gathered in Toronto to recognize Richard Turchinetz’s 50 years of continuous service with Bird.

Beginning his career in 1960 as an Office Clerk with Bird in Winnipeg, Richard progressed through the positions of Project Coordinator, Project Manager,

and Estimator, before moving to the Edmonton Branch to take on the role of Chief Estimator followed by Branch Manager. In 1984, Richard was relocated to the Toronto office to manage operations there. For the last 7 years, he has continued to be active in the firm as a Vice President.

Thank You Richard, for a Half Century of Dedication!

Bird President & CEO Tim Talbott (right), presents a plaque honouring Richard’s achievement to the guest of honour. The plaque now hangs in the corporate office alongside the 25 Year Club Members list.

Many joined Richard (far left) in celebration at the recognition dinner. Pictured here alongside Richard (from left to right) are: former Bird President and The Company founder’s son Bob Bird; Paul Charette, Chair of the Board; and Vice Chair Paul Raboud.

At the heart of the internationally renowned Banff Centre, the Kinnear Centre for Creativity and Innovation sits cradled by the majestic Rockies. The physical and intellectual core of the Banff Centre campus, the Kinnear Centre features over 21,000 square feet of classroom, performance, meeting, library and archive space. Targeting LEED® Silver certification, the zinc clad Kinnear Centre also includes a galleria, an internet café and pub with balconies and patios overlooking the surrounding mountains and a new outdoor performance amphitheatre.

While a project site nestled into the Rockies offers some great views, the foundation requirements

can be challenging. Located on bedrock, the necessary five metre excavation demanded the continued perseverance for three months to accomplish. Throughout the project, Bird managed traffic control and work activities – as many as 140 tradespeople at the peak of construction - to ensure that the Centre would continue to operate with minimal impact on conference guests and participants. Upon completion of the project, The Banff Centre President and CEO commented that the Bird crew was “a sensational team who completed the Centre on time and on budget. They did so due to their devotion and planning, which was extensive. They really owned this project.”

Elevating the typical utilitarian aesthetic of municipal operations centres, the elegant Newmarket Operations Centre has garnered plenty of attention. The recipient of Canadian Architect’s Award of Excellence, The Centre is composed of three independent buildings, including a warehouse, vehicle maintenance facility, and offices. Slated to achieve LEED® Silver Certification, the centre includes several advanced systems to contribute to the facility’s consideration for environmental sustainability. While the implementation and commissioning of new technologies led to many challenges throughout the project, Bird successfully maintained the project schedule delivering an award winning building on time.

Among the Centre’s notable features is the 20 overhead bi-fold doors each measuring 20 feet by 20 feet. Clad entirely in double-glazed curtain wall and installed flush with the primary building envelope, each door installation demanded rigorous attention to detail and coordination.

A state-of-the-art facility that demanded scrupulous attention from the Bird Project Team, the Brandon Fire Hall consists of a five bay, two storey fire hall, associated offices, the Provincial Dispatch Communications Centre as well as the City of Brandon Fire Fighters Museum. Facility highlights include five double bays that feature a source capture exhaust system, and a radiant heating system supplemented by forced air unit heaters for effective heat recovery. A stainless steel medical decontamination area is also included in the facility.

A 22 week delivery time of the pre-cut exterior wall panels necessitated a strict adherence to the submittal approval process. As such, Bird organized a collective review procedure with trades and consultants to ensure accuracy of the fabrication. Similar proactive review systems were established for the other unique building components including the wood faced ceiling panels, the glulam bridge and balcony, and the energy efficient white-coloured thermoplastic polyolefin roof system.

Delivered under the Public-Private Partnership model, these two schools are unlike any other educational facility in the province. Serving as the primary entry point for students and teachers, each school features a 4,000 square foot atrium with clerestory windows that provide an abundance of natural light throughout the day. Constructed of precast concrete and insulated panel exterior and concrete block interior partitions, both schools are targeting LEED® Silver certification.

Faced with the challenge of an aggressive delivery schedule, Bird relied on its depth of experience in developing design solutions that increased the projects’ constructability and helped to fast track the construction of both schools. By establishing a detailed critical path schedule at the beginning of the projects with added input from the New Brunswick Department of Education and other relevant stakeholders, Bird was able to further reduce the timeline, delivering the Moncton school two months early. A sequential tendering of the subtrades advanced the start of construction, further reducing the schedule duration.

Fifth in a series of successful projects completed by Bird Construction at St. Francis Xavier University, the Schwartz School of Business adds another jewel to this striking campus. Targeting LEED® Gold certification, the new 80,000 sq. ft. project involves the renovation of a former science building as well as a 20,000 sq. ft. addition.

Eager to occupy the facility by the 2010/11 school year, Bird was active in fast tracking the project. The aggressive schedule necessitated a participatory design process that brought the project team together with university stakeholders in a series of design workshops that advanced the pre-construction phase in a short period of time. A strong relationship with many local trades ensured the condensed production schedule was able to proceed without diminishing the high quality of work the client has come to expect from Bird.

A substantial challenge was the introduction of a new building program into a 50 year old facility. Limited floor to floor space threatened to reduce valuable ceiling height due to the new mechanical and electrical systems. By installing 77 heat pumps throughout the building, the Bird Project Team was able to greatly reduce the need for large duct runs. In the larger teaching spaces, air distribution was achieved using a plenum system rather than the typical noisier duct work. This also delivered a higher finished ceiling height.

In recognition of its achievements as the design-builder of the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre, The Canadian Design-Build Institute (CDBI) recently presented the Community Development Top Award to Bird Design-Build Limited. Located on the campus of the University of British Columbia, The Thunderbird Sports Centre is identified by CDBI for not only the demonstration of “a ‘text-book’ DB approach to an arena design challenge” but also the integration of “clever features” into the design that made the project unique.

Built to host the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey events and the Paralympic Sledge Hockey games, the flexibility of the design provides the University of British Columbia with a premier, multi-purpose forum for University, community, and commercial events. Able to support both Olympic and NHL size rinks the facility can be converted to a 7500 seat performance venue providing clear sight-lines, acoustic control and staging. Built to LEED® Silver certification requirements, the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre was delivered ahead of schedule.

Subsequently, Bird was quick to commit to Suncor’s request to assist in the design and complete construction of this high profile project in time for the formal unveiling.

surrey outpatient hospitalfive months ahead of schedule! At over 300,000 square feet, the new Surrey Outpatient Hospital delivers a sizeable healthcare addition to this growing Vancouver suburb. As part of the BC Healthcare consortium, Bird established a Joint Venture with Bouygues Bâtiment International to procure this Public-Private Partnership project. This outpatient and day-surgery building provides a full range of scheduled services including day surgery, diagnostic imaging, express testing, medical clinic and rehabilitation.

Targeting LEED® Gold certification, the Bird project team was able to achieve substantial completion five months ahead of schedule. Set with a highly experienced and determined team, Bird was able to instil our “Do It Now” attitude throughout the project group, ensuring the complex construction progressed. When faced with a design inconsistency early in the construction phase, Bird was quick to assemble all key team members and facilitate a timely resolution to the satisfaction of all parties. While the concentration of efforts was exhaustive, a solution was formulated within hours instead of days, allowing the trades on site to continue with construction.
