Cerro Author 2019: Temple Grandin

Our Cerro Author’s visit is quickly approaching! Temple Grandin will visit campus on February 12 to

give three talks for students and one talk open to the public.

She’ll give presentations at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. called “Thinking in Pictures, Expanded Edition: My Life

with Autism.” These two events will take place in the Levan Center. The 2 p.m. talk will be Livecast to

Delano.

At 4 p.m., Dr. Grandin will speak to students on “Animals in Translation: Using the Mysteries of

Autism to Decode Animal Behavior” in the Renegade Park.

Dr. Grandin’s public lecture will be at 7 p.m. in the Indoor Theatre on “Animals Make Us Human:

Creating the Best Life for Animals.” This event is free and open to the public.

To help prepare students for these events, the library is offering BC students a free copy of one of Dr.

Grandin’s books. These books are available at the reference desk on the second floor of the

library while supplies last. Students need a BC student ID to collect their free book. The books are

available on a first come, first served basis.

Finally, the library has put together a LibGuide for Temple Grandin’s visit. This guide contains

detailed information about Dr. Grandin and her events at BC, as well as help finding books and

BC Delano Book Club The Book Club at the Delano Campus has four titles on the program this semester. The club is

open to students, faculty and staff, and the commitment can be either one book or more. Books

are free for the first 15 participants. The books are written by authors visiting BC this

semester as part of the Distinguished Speaker Series, and the Delano campus community

will have the opportunity to hear the author speak via Livecast before we get together to

discuss. The Book Club meetings are held in the Library and structured to be casual

conversations about the important and engaging issues presented in the books.

The books are funded by the SGA through the KVS sticker program.

Library Research Skills Workshops

Our Spring 2019 research skills workshop schedule is now available! Students can find the

schedule in print at the reference desk on the second floor of the library, or online at

www.bakersfieldcollege.edu/library/workshops.

The library offers our 7 research skills workshops a total of 40 times from February 4-April 25.

Workshops are 1 hour long and cover basic research skills that students need to conduct research

for their BC classes. Descriptions of each workshop are available at the link above.

The Delano library will offer workshops the weeks of April 8 and April 22. The schedule listed above

includes these dates.

We know that many of our BC faculty assign our library workshops to their classes. If you are one of

those faculty, we would like to gently remind you that the workshops have limited seating and are

first-come, first-served… and due to the love for procrastination that seems inherent in all humans,

students often show up en masse to our workshops during the last week or two that they are

offered. Please let your students know that we advise arriving early to workshops in case seats run

out, and that our workshops usually start at least an hour early during the last 2 weeks workshops

are offered because the room is already full.

Online Library Orientations in Canvas In addition to our one-hour Research Workshops, the library has short modules that can be

downloaded into your Canvas course. You can pick and choose which of the eight modules you

would like to add-- or you can add all of them. The eight modules include Orientation

Welcome, Research Strategies, Databases, eBooks, Evaluating Books and Articles, Google

Searching, Evaluating Internet Sources, and Avoiding Plagiarism. Each module will take

around 10 minutes to complete, and each has a 5-question quiz students will complete to check for

competency. These online modules are meant as an alternative to our in-person research skills

workshops rather than to replace the in-person customized library orientations that we offer.

To download the modules:

Step 1 - In Canvas, go into a course in which you want to add the module(s). Click on “Import from

Commons.”

Step 2 - Search for “Bakersfield College Library Orientation.” (These are not to be confused with the

orientations we do for individual classes. This name will change in the future to avoid confusion.)

Step 3 - Click the link(s) to the module(s) you would like to add. Be sure to click on the link(s) for the

library. You will then be asked into which of your courses you would like the modules added.

Click “Import into Course” when done selecting.

If you have used the modules in the past, please note that we have removed the badges (but hope

to add them back in the fall). We will also be adding a Searching for Books module, so check back

soon.
