Life enrichment experiences enable our residents to live fully with a sense of purpose and meaning. Last month an estimated 80 plus residents and over 15 team members (staff) joined in a life enrichment event that encourages empowerment and resident choice. The event challenged us as team members to have fun and serve outside of our typical roles by modeling, serving and engaging our residents. This event allowed us to collaborate as a campus to educate and to fulfill our mission to provide exceptional and meaningful life experiences for our residents. The campus wide engagement and support exemplifies our values. There are multiple enrichment activities, including education (learning is continuous) conducted with our residents by medical staff, interns, volunteers and team members that include music, art, gardening and talk therapy. There are also enrichment events that have been initiated and conducted by our residents which recently have included a duo performance of piano playing and singing by Willow Oaks residents Gerry Ogle and Henrietta Kendall, and a talent performance with over 5 residents exhibiting their musical, theatrical, dance and comedy skills. Be on the lookout for an upcoming, BG Whos Got Talent Show”! Birmingham Green recently welcomed our new Learning & Development Manager, Debra Campbell, MSN to the Staff Development team and we will have a Life Enrichment Director joining our team in early Fall. Both of these positions will have a vital role on our campus. We look forward to their contributions that will enhance the services and programs that are offered to our team members, residents and families. As we approach the Fall season, we think of Influenza (Flu) season and would like to remind you that per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Healthy People 2020 Initiative, the flu vaccination is vital for adults 65 years and older, because this age group is one of the most susceptible (along with children and pregnant women). In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that about 54 to 70 percent of flu-related hospitalizations occur in those 65 years and older and 71 to 85 percent of flu-related deaths occur in the same age group. Why? Unfortunately, it is because the immune system weakens with age. Vaccination is vital for adults 65 years and older, because this age group is one of the most susceptible, along with children and pregnant women. The good news is that the CDCs recent studies show that the vaccination reduces the risk of catching the flu by 40 to 60 percent. If you would like more information please contact Lynn Ebert, BGs ADON/Infection Control Specialist at 703-257-3498. The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning. Willow Oaks welcomed Lutricia Lewis Quarles, the Founder of the Looking at You Program which focuses on empowerment and choice. We had a large resident turnout for the event. Residents chose from a variety of teas and selected from chocolate covered strawberries, scones and gourmet cookies all while learning about the history of hats. While Ms. Jordan Gilliard performed a vocal solo and delighted the audience with her amazing talent, the big hit was the Hat Show! Birmingham Green team members showcased a variety of hats for men and women much to the delight of the crowd. The event concluded with a big finale parade of hats, closing remarks from our CEO and Administrators along with a poem read by Willow Oaks resident Gerry Ogle. We hope Ms. Lewis Quarles will visit us again soon!

Congratulations to Ms.

Birmingham Green is pleased to announce the promotion of Hwan Yi to the position of Administrator at Willow Oaks, effective August 27, 2018. After a very competitive process, two panels selected Mr. Yi as the top candidate. Mr. Yi joined Birmingham Green in October 2014 as an Assistant Administrator at the Skilled Nursing Home. Prior to coming to Birmingham Green he held positions as an Executive Director, an Assisted Liv-ing Administrator, a Program Director of an All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly in Northern Virginia and a Social Worker. Please join us in congratulating Hwan on his new role!

The residents participated in an Art Exhibit Show during National Nursing Home Week in May. The Art Show was a collaboration of art work from residents and staff. The show included a combination of creative to abstract art from the District Home, Willow Oaks and the Nursing Home residents.

What is Zika virus infection? Zika virus infection is a viral disease spread to people through bites of infected mosquitoes. Zika virus is transmitted primarily by the Yellow fever mosquito.

Who gets Zika virus infection? Anyone traveling to an area where Zika virus is found can become infected. Infections have been reported in travelers returning to the U.S. from affected areas.

What are the symptoms? About 80% of people infected do not become sick. For the 20% who do become sick, the most common symptoms include fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild and the symptoms typically last several days to a week.

How is Zika virus spread? Zika virus is mainly spread in a person‐to‐mosquito‐to‐person cycle. An infected mosquito bites a person. CDC continues to emphasize that the primary mode of Zika virus transmission is through the bite of an infected mosquito. There is still more to be learned regarding sexual contact as a mode of transmission for Zika. What is the treatment for Zika? There is no specific treatment for Zika virus infection. Healthcare providers primarily provide supportive care to relieve symptoms. Infected people should also stay indoors or wear protective clothing and mosquito repellent. If you have symptoms and have been to an affected area contact your physician.

What may be a normal everyday activity of sharing photos, videos and posts on social media, may actually result in a violation of Resident Rights. A resident may feel that their dignity and/or privacy was violated after a photo was shared on social media without their consent. It is the policy of Birmingham Green to protect Resident Rights. One way we do so is by obtaining written consent from a resident or family member for the sharing of photographs in newsletters, social media or campus events. Please help us manage electronic communication and social media by ensuring that other residents are not in the photos that you share of your loved one.

Nutrition education and food all rolled into a cooking group at The District Home. Our Dietitian, Cheryl Knight, continues the activity started by social work interns. We meet twice a month and while we prepare our recipe, we learn about the featured foods: their history, names, nutrient content and health benefits. We’ve made fruit smoothies, strawberry pie, Chinese Lo Mein using a real wok from China and chop sticks, Vietnamese summer rolls and many more.

Our partnership with Lyric’s Garden is a huge success!

Seven year old Lyric Lucas was just 5 when she began her mission to feed

those in need of fresh fruits and vegetables. To accomplish her goal, she hosts

pop-up gardens throughout Northern Virginia. This spring she chose

Birmingham Green as a garden site. The grand opening ribbon cutting

ceremony was held on July 13 when Lyric opened the garden to staff and

residents. There were over 40 people in attendance including residents, staff,

guests and volunteers. Our residents truly enjoyed being able to go in to the

garden and help with the harvesting. They also assisted in bagging vegetables

to give to the community.

Nina Rhys: Nina is pursuing a Master’s degree in social work (MSW) at

Virginia Commonwealth University. She has worked in the health care field

for over 25 years and decided that becoming a social worker/advocate was the

ideal way for her to be of service to elders. She loves working with elders as

they have so many wonderful stories and experiences to share. Nina will be

working at the District Home until she graduates in May at which time she will

return to Seattle to find work there.

Katrina Backus: Katrina is working toward a Bachelor’s degree in Social

Work. She hopes to graduate from George Mason University in a year then

continue on to obtain a Master’s degree. Her favorite activities are reading,

traveling and white water rafting. She is looking forward to working with the

residents!

Caitlin Stauffer: Caitlin is a graduate student at George Mason University,

concentrating in Social Work for the aging population. After graduation she

hopes to work closely with elders before pursuing a Doctorate degree in

neurology, focusing on the anatomy of brains diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. In

her spare time Caitlin is a volunteer firefighter and EMT in Prince William

County. She also loves to spoil her dog Wyatt.

In an effort to better serve you as families and friends, we welcome your input on topics of interest and the best day and time to schedule family events. We recently held 2 Family Nights over the past 6 months. Both were educational sessions; The first session focused on emergency preparedness and the most recent event showed a movie titled Being Mortal, with a discussion afterwards hosted by Capital Caring Hospice. Please call Aaron Rebuck at 703-257-6285 with your input/suggestions.
