Birmingham Ornithology Collections Part 2 – The W R Lysaght Collection of Birds

1

Introduction

William Royse Lysaght C.B.E. was born in 1858 and died in 1945. His collection was essentially

that of E.M. Connop of Wroxham, near Norwich. Lysaght acquired this in 1912 or 1913. It was

housed at Castleford Museum in Chepstow and was presented to Bimingham Museum and Art

Gallery by Mr. Desmond Lysaght in memory of his father. Lysaght ran the family business, John

Lysaght Ltd, which made galvanised steel sheets and other steel products. The original works were

in Wolverhampton but subsequently factories were opened in Newport, Bristol and Australia. The

company was taken over in 1920 by GKN to which Lysaght was appointed as a director.

The collection was acquired by Birmingham in 1954 during the time when a new Natural History

display was being developed in the branch museum at Cannon Hill Park. However, a letter on file

indicates that not all of the collection was accepted by Birmingham and that “a selection of

material must be made to ensure representation of each species, important varieties and records”

and that this would be “limited by the as yet unknown amount of reserve storage space”.

Although originally cased many (probably the majority of) specimens were removed from these at

Chepstow: “In order to get the cases into the limited workspace here, it seems desirable that some

preliminary dismantling should be done in Chepstow. I would therefore like to strip out and repack

a fair number of specimens before sending them northwards”.

In 1955 Birmingham was approached about the specimens which had been left behind as

Castleford was “sold again – this time to the Atco Motor Mower Company and the new owners are

not interested in the remainder of the Museum collection.” However, the reply was that

Birmingham had “removed everything for which we could find good storage” and the offer of the

balance of the collection was declined. The ultimate fate of these remaining specimens is unknown.

The printed catalogue of the collection [The Natural History Collection at Castleford, Chepstow, of

Mr. W.R. Lysaght, printed by Mullock & Sons Ltd. of Chepstow in September 1913] lists some 680

cases or individual specimens of which Birmingham acquired over 400. These amounted to a total

of 1,860 birds of which Birmingham acquired nearly 1300. Of the three large private collections

acquired by Birmingham (Auden, Chase and Lysaght) this was originally both the biggest and the

richest with some 325 species represented, though admittedly not all of these were British. The

original catalogue lists some fourteen taxidermists, eleven of whom are represented in the part of

the collection acquired by Birmingham, although the majority of specimens were mounted by Cole,

Pashley and Saunders.

Provenance

Provenances of the specimens of the Lysaght (Connop) collection are given in the tables below. In

order to facilitate comparison with the other two large private collections in Birmingham, and for

those interested in the history of collections, the tables include all the specimens previously in the

collection, not just those which came to Birmingham, based on the published Castleford catalogue

mentioned above.

It is well known that Connop was a local, Norfolk collector but despite this the bias towards

specimens from that county is quite staggering at some 73% of the whole collection. Furthermore it

is quite likely that a fair number of the 310 specimens (17%) which are given no provenance also

came from that county. The final 10% of the collection includes specimens from the rest of the

British Isles and the rest of the world (almost half of them). Many of the latter were probably later

additions to the collection by Lysaght himself. The concentration on Norfolk provenances seems to

have largely spared Connop from the so-called Hastings Rarities scandal and only two specimens

(the two examples of Black Larks in the collection, HR302 and 303) can definitely be attributed to

this affair.

Of the 1,360 specimens from Norfolk some 785 have a more detailed provenance and the following

table shows the extent and numerical breakdown of Connop’s collecting across Norfolk. The high

numbers respectively from Breydon, Cley, Blakeney, Yarmouth and Hickling hardly need

comment.

Date of Specimens

Over a thousand specimens (57%) have the date of collection in the field recorded for them. There

are several early specimens, the majority of which were probably acquired from other earlier

collections. The bulk of the dated specimens (75%) fall in the period 1876 to 1895 and this was

clearly his most active period of collecting both in terms of buying specimens from dealers and

collecting them himself – Connop is recorded as shooting birds himself between 1880 and 1894.

However he clearly continued to add to the collection until the very end with an average of about

ten specimens a year for the last eighteen years though some of the very latest specimens may well

have been added by Lysaght rather than being part of the original Connop collection (e.g. at least

one of the penguins).

The Checklist

The checklist which follows only includes the specimens which came to Birmingham and contains

all the information given for them in the Castleford catalogue. It follows the current British List for

ease of reference rather than the original catalogue order, with species not represented on the list

inserted under the appropriate family. Some foreign specimens are listed at the end. The columns

are arranged in the following order:

1. Birmingham accession number

2. Lysaght’s “original” number based on the Castleford catalogue

3. details of sex, maturity and varieties. The following abbreviations have been used: m = male, f =

female, dow = downie, imm = immature, juv = juvenile, nes = nestling (downies and nestlings are

often mounted in groups and the number of specimens in a group is given as a figure after the

abbreviation), alb =albino, pi = pied.

4. date of collection (given in the format dd.mm.yyyy but where only the year is known this is

given as 00.00.yyyy and where no exact day is known it is given as 00.mm.yyyy)

5. county of origin

6. detailed provenance where known

7. notes which follow the main listing. These consist of annotations on individual specimens but in

order to save space and repetition these have been edited into footnotes

An x in any column denotes that the information is not available in the Castleford catalogue.
