The reliable foaling alarmAlways on time when your mare gives birth

As a horse lover you know that a pregnant mare wants rest just before the birth of her foal. her instincts tell her that pushing out the foal puts her in an extremely vulnerable position and that is something the mare would like to avoid. therefore she is able to postpone the birth until there is calm in the stables or in the meadow. You want her to enjoy that rest, as it encourages a good and uncomplicated birth, so you don’t want to bother her unnecessarily. But how will you know when your mare will give birth? You want to be there in time! then you use Birth Alarm. the reliable foaling alarm.

When a mare feels the first contractions, she will lie on her flanks for a short or long period of time. In this fully lateral position she can deal with the contractions and optimise the expulsive force. Birth Alarm detects this change in the mare’s position and gives you a signal at the right time. By using Birth Alarm you’re always present at the birth. Birth Alarm has been tested in practice for its use and reliability. Horse lovers and professionals worldwide use this method to encourage a safe birth and hundreds of foals have been born with the support from Birth Alarm. You can choose a Birth Alarm with a receiver or a Birth Alarm for your mobile phone.

how does the Birth Alarm work? Most mares rest by half lying down, sitting down, or even whilst standing up. They reserve the fully lateral position for giving birth. However, there are some mares, approximately 10%, who also rest in the lateral position. In order to signal the birth in time for both groups, you can set the Birth Alarm in two positions - position A and position B.

Birth Alarm CLASSIC consists of one transmitter, one receiver and you also need an anti-roll girth. You put this leather girth around the mare’s withers, knowing that it does not bother the horse at all. You attach the transmitter to the girth and you put the receiver somewhere near you. The transmitter has a range of 1km, but you do not need to stay with the receiver if you connect the Birth Alarm telephone dialler, it will just call you on a chosen number. In distant areas it is possible to use a 12V connection. You are not always home? By connecting the Birth Alarm telephone dialler you can have the receiver call the number where you can be reached. The newest Birth Alarm CLASSIC model is provided with a control function to test the battery in the sender and/or the reception of the sender signal by the receiver. This version can be recognized by the green label on the backside of the sender and receiver. The sender has a range of 1 km, but this can be extended with help of the GSM mobile phone dialler.

Position A: for normally resting highly pregnant maresThe birth has started, and during contractions the mare lies down in the fully lateral position. The transmitter detects this position, and sends a signal to your receiver or mobile phone after 7.6 seconds. Studies have demonstrated that contractions last a minimum of 7 seconds.

Position B: for mares that rest in a horizontal positionThere are 2 possible situations for this group.

situation 1 The mare adopts a fully lateral position to rest. The alarm will not go off, because it is set on position B. However, the transmitter does detect that the mare is in the fully lateral position. If the mare still maintains this position after 3 minutes, the Birth Alarm records that the mare is resting and the system is neutralised. If the mare stands up after 30 minutes and then lies down again on her flank, the Birth Alarm again records the situation for 3 minutes. It records it for 3 minutes, because the contractions of a mare never last longer than 2.5 minutes. Therefore the Birth Alarm uses 3 minutes as its starting point, including a safety margin of 30 seconds.

situation 2 The mare adopts a fully lateral position to rest, but has contractions. The alarm will not go off after 7.6 seconds, because it is set on position B. However, the transmitter does record that the mare is in the fully lateral position. After this contraction with a maximum duration of 2.5 minutes, the mare prepares for the next contraction by leaving the fully lateral position. As soon as the Birth Alarm records this movement within a time span of 3 minutes since the mare lay down, it sends a signal to your receiver or mobile phone.

The Birth Alarm GSM consists of just a

transmitter, which you attach to the leather girth on the mare’s withers. The transmitter phones you on your mobile phone, so you can be contacted anywhere, as long as your mobile phone is switched on and has a signal. You need a prepaid sim card for the Birth Alarm GSM, which is easy to programme from your own mobile phone. The instructions are described clearly in the instructions for use.
