It’s easy to voteHere’s what you have to do. How do I start?Your name must be on the register of electors if you want to vote. Paying council tax does not

automatically register you to vote you must fill in a separate registration form. A form is sent to

every home each autumn but you can register at any time. If you move house you will need to

re-register at your new address. If you’re not registered contact Electoral Services or download

a form from our website. How will I know when and where to vote?If your name is on the register of electors, you will be sent a card just before an election. This is

called a poll card. This card will tell you when the election is, where your polling station is (this is

the place where you go to vote) and the opening times. Polling is another word for voting. If you

do not receive a poll card prior to an election contact Electoral Services. Where do I vote?On election day, go to the polling station. This is often a school, local hall or public building

near where you live. The staff inside are there to help you and will ask you for your name and

address so that they can check your name off the register – it helps if you could bring your poll

card with you. You will then be given your ballot paper. What is a ballot paper? The staff at the polling station will give you a list of the people or parties you can vote for. This

is called a ballot paper. You may be given more than one ballot paper if there is more than

one election on the same day. How do I vote?Take your ballot paper into a polling booth so that no-one can see how you vote. The ballot

paper will tell you at the top how many people you can vote for. Choose who you want to vote

for by putting an X in the blank box to the right of their name(s). Do not write anything else

on the paper or your vote may not be counted. Don’t worry if you make a mistake just hand it

back to a member of staff who will be able to give you another one. What do I do next?Fold the ballot paper in half and put it in the ballot box. If you are not clear what to do, ask the

staff at the polling station to help you. Do not let anyone see your vote. Can I vote by post?Yes. If you want to vote by post, you need to fill in a postal vote application form. Contact your

local electoral registration officer or download a form from our website or contact Electoral

Services. If you fill in a postal voting form, you will not be able to vote in person at a polling

station.

What happens after? When voting is over the votes are counted. The winner or winners are the people with the most

votes. These people are responsible for representing you. You can tell them what you think

about issues by phone, letter or email. You can also meet them in person. Contact details are

available from Electoral Services or on our website.

You can vote if you are 18 years or over.(you must be either British, Irish, Commonwealth or an EU citizen).

Suggested inside wording

Your Council is running a competition for anyone to designthe front of a Birthday Card which will be sent to all 18 yearolds in the area in the coming 12 months.

The prize for the winning entry is a £50.00 iTunes Voucherkindly sponsored by the printers.

Why send 18 year olds a card from the Council?Amongst other things, at the age of 18 an eligible person can:• Vote in all elections and polls

• Stand as a candidate at elections

We want to encourage young voters and increase theirparticipation at elections. Sending a Birthday Card on their18th Birthday helps remind young people of their votingrights and where they can get help and extra informationif required.

Who is eligible to enter the design competition?Anyone who cares to submit a design! But we wouldparticularly encourage designs from young people.

What do I need to think about when designing a card? The card would be best linked to something about elections, either by informing them of their new rights and/or givinginformation about where they can seek extra help andadvice. Other than that any ideas would be welcome.

Are there any design constraints?

• The card will be printed as A5 size, that is 210mm deep x 148mm wide. And so please use these sizes when designing your entry.

• Our printers will scan the winning design and incorporateit into their artwork when printing the whole birthday card.Or, you could send any type of electronic file, and our printers will work from that.

• Full colour can be used as the printing process is digital.• Unfortunately, ideas such as glitter, special finishes etc. won’t reproduce.

• Please note, all Copyright and Intellectual Property Rightspass to the printers upon entry of the design.

Who and by when do I need to send my design to?Please send all entries to …………………..

Entries must be received by ………………………

Who’s judging and when will I know if I have won?The entries will be judged in the most democratic way, aswith all elections!

We are having a Democracy day on xx/xx/xx and all thepeople there will vote for what they think is the best design.Winners will be notified soon after that, with the card designin circulation by January.
