“The true benefits of private schools are smaller classes, more individualized instruction and a strong sense of community within the school,” according to educator Linda Ferraro-Swearer, owner and director of Jenny Lynn Academy.

Jenny Lynn Academy, which currently serves preschool and kindergarten students, will be opening Jenny Lynn Elementary School at the lower level of 408 Wyoming Avenue in Kingston. The coming school year will include first through third grades and expand to include fourth grade in 2015 and fifth grade the year after that. Classes will have a maximum of 14 students in each class.

Ferraro-Swearer says, “After 35 years of running our preschool at Jenny Lynn Academy, it felt like the right time to expand.”

Ferraro-Swearer and Marya Nackley, also owner and director of Jenny Lynn Elementary, plan an innovative curriculum in the new school, focusing on critical thinking and leadership skills, as well as global awareness. “Children need to embrace diversity in order to promote tolerance and acceptance. We hope to help our students understand who they are in relationship to the world, as well as to our community,” says Ferraro-Swearer.

Starting in the very first year, children will have the opportunity to do oral presentations in

front of their peers and to take foreign language classes.

Nackley stresses the curriculum will “encompass the whole child – their heart, mind and body” and will include a unique physical education program with classes like yoga and Zumbatonic.

The Directors say that their preschool is “a big extended family” and Jenny Lynn Elementary will continue their tradition of community and family. Parents and guardians who would like more information about Jenny Lynn Elementary can call 570.288.3808 or log onto jennylynnelementary.org.

Building Blocks Learning Center also is launching a private school for early elementary

education called “The Academy at Building Blocks.” This fall, the school will be adding a kindergarten to its program in Mountain Top and will grow with additional grades each year. Classes will include up to

22 students with a teacher and an assistant. Transportation will be available from Building Blocks’ Wilkes-Barre location and before and after care will be offered.

Zubeen Saeed, President and CEO, says that this was a ‘natural progression’ for Building Blocks, which currently offers daycare for infants, toddlers, preschool, pre-kindergarten, as well as school aged programs. The curriculum will be an “all encompassing, well-rounded program” according to Saeed. Children will study reading, math, science, foreign language, art, music and physical education, as well as social and emotional development. “The curriculum is innovative and very hands-on,” she adds.

The Academy at Building Blocks is accepting applications. More information can be found at buildingblockslearningcenter.com.

Paula Chaiken is the mother of three boys who appreciates the diversity of educational offerings in our community.

    Pull Out & Save

    Planning ALL Year Long!

  • NEPA Family Magazine Bir thday Par ty Guide 2014 12

The Birthday Wish RevisitedTry this new birthday tradition in your family to foster long-term goal setting and an attitude of exploration: ask the birthday boy or girl to answer a bucket list question such as “what do you most want to do in the next year?” You may also phrase it as, “What do you look forward to now that you are x years old?” Write down the answer. Then post it somewhere as a reminder of his or her hope for the year.

Get RegisteredOur schedules are never more open to possibility than during activity registrations. And clubs, organizations and others conduct sign-ups multiple times throughout the year. Use those occasions to not only register for an activity that your child has not yet tried (a new sport, a foreign language class, etc), but also as a reminder to check an item off your family bucket list. It’s a perfect reminder to discover a new venture for the entire family. Sign up for a class together, plan a weekend outing, buy tickets to a concert. Given the regularity of registrations as a reminder, you will be less likely to let much time pass between family bucket list adventures. And it goes without saying that those shared family adventures bring families that much closer. When family members rely on the support of one another to accomplish new goals and share in the overall experience, the bonding that occurs is powerful.

Celebrate Good TimesIt is not that we aren’t marking our days with meaningful activities. Usually it is more that the pace of modern life necessitates moving on quickly to the next thing. Making a tradition of celebrating what we have accomplished – as individuals and as a family – can help us appreciate the richness of our experiences. And the beginning and end of the school year provide natural junctures for celebration.

At the end of the school year, look back on the growth during those ten months. Reflect on favorite memories. Make the last day of school a celebration of both the completion of the school year, and the accomplishment of any goals. Acknowledge also any firsts not yet reached as experiences to anticipate for the future.

As summer comes to an end, take the time to recap favorite vacation moments as part of your back-to-school tradition. Talk about new skills learned, new places visited and any other experiences of note from the summer. Share the stories now. You’ll find the exercise sharpens your memory of those significant events into the future.

You may not be able to slow the countdown timer on your kids’ childhoods. But with traditions like these on your side, you’ll freeze those meaningful moments as you go along. And striving to reach family goals together creates opportunities for communication and bonding like none other.

Lara Krupicka is a mother of three and author of Family Bucket Lists: Bring More Fun, Adventure & Camaraderie Into Every Day.

Often moms lament how busy life can be. The common theme is one of being carried along by the calendar. But it is possible to weave the ‘meaningful’ in between the ‘everyday stuff’ of carpools and play dates. You can have a sense of living life together, not just doing life. The key? Capitalizing on birthdays and other regularly occurring events as opportunities to make and live your bucket lists.

Consider these three ways your family can seize opportunities to live a meaningful goal-oriented life:

    By Lara Krupicka

940 Saturdays plus 1,656 summer vacation days equals your kid’s childhood. How are you spending those days?

Who Will be the Next Who Was...?To celebrate the release of the 100th Who Was...? book (to be published in Summer 2015), Penguin Young Readers is asking kids to cast votes for who they want to learn about and see featured as the subject of the 100th biography. Now through June 1st, kids can choose their favorite athlete, singer or movie star. Kids can even choose a family member or teacher and can vote as many times as they’d like! The winning subject will be announced on

July 1st, 2014. Grosset & Dunlap’s Who Was…? series is the leading biography series for young readers. The quirky cover art and illustrations and the novel-like prose make learning about famous thinkers, politicians and history-makers – both past and present – fun! The success of these books has inspired a What Was…? series and a Where Is…? series (focusing on locations of historical and cultural importance) will be launching in Winter 2015. To vote, visit whowasbookseries.com.

Seventh Annual Bike Helmet GiveawayThe Hourigan, Kluger & Quinn Fund for Children’s Advocacy, also known as HKQ Kids, will give away free bicycle helmets as part of its ongoing efforts to promote child safety in the region. This year’s event will be held at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre

from 11am to 6pm during the annual Fourth of July fireworks celebration. To receive a helmet, children must be 12 or under and accompanied by an adult.

National Summer Learning Day is June 21Instilling Strong Values while Avoiding the Summertime Learning Slide “Summer is a great time to help children grow and prepare for the grade ahead,” says George Starks, creator of the Summer Fit Activity Book series... a fun-filled and action-packed, grade-specific series of workbooks, written by teachers specifically for independent use by educators and parents throughout the summer. The workbooks are divided into 10 sections to correlate with the traditional 10 weeks of summer (only 20-30 minutes are needed a day to complete a chapter within a weeks time). Not only do these books provide activities in reading, math, language arts and science, but they also reinforce the importance of good character and social skills and provide daily fitness and wellness tips.
