Vacant Grounds (nuisance Prevention) Bdl.The second reading of this Bill, the object of which is to abate a

nuisance in the 8hape of a fair held on the vacant ground adjoiningTottenham-court-road Chapel, was, on the motion of Mr. J. Rowlands,read a stcond time.

Coroners Bill.

On the motion for the second reading of this Bill, Mr. Conybearecommented on the arbitrary power possessed by coroners of excludingreporters from the court-a power which, he thought, ought not to beperpetuated.—The Attorney-General, however, replied that the questionraised by the hon. memoer was foreign to the scope of the Bill, whichwas theu read a second time. On Wednesday the Lords agreed to theamendments to the Bill made in the Lower House.

Tricltinosis.On Monday, Mr. C. Gray having adverted to the report that a large

number of persons on the Continent were suffering from trichinosis fromeating Hambro’ bacon, and to the need of protective measures beingtaken on behalf of the inhabitants of the British Isles. the Secretary ofthe Board of Trade said no information of the matter had been receivedby the Board, and that the question relating to the importation oftrichinous meat was one which came under the jurisdiction of theCustoms.

Avafety in Theatres.In answer to Sir A. Borthwick, Mr. Matthews said the Govern-

ment could not undertake at this period of the session to pass a Billrelating to securing the safety of the public in theatres. But heundertook that the Government would, at the earliest possible opportu-nity, offer practical suggestions to any theatrical manager who mightthink fit to adopt them, with a view to ensure safety in the practicaldetails of the construction of such buildings.

Destitute Aliens.On Tuesday, in answer to Captain Colomb, Mr. W. H. Smith said that

Her Majesty’s Government was fully alive to the importance of placingsome restriction on the importation of destitute foreigners into thissountry, but there were many serious difficulties in the way of dealing gwith it, amongthem the right of asylum in this country. It would beunwise for him to say more than that the Government would give thematter their most serious consideration. *
