DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE June 2015

This school development report for the 2014-15 school year outlines your school’s successes and highlights matters such as student

achievement and professional development.

The formulation of a school development report is the result of significant planning and input from the entire school community. A

thorough plan lays the foundation for a productive and successful school year and will be beneficial to every member of the school

community, most importantly the students of your school.

As we conclude the first year of the District’s 2014-2017 Strategic Plan, I would like to thank our school communities, administrators,

teachers, support staff, school councils and community volunteers for their participation and input. Your efforts to develop and

implement previous plans have helped to ensure a focus on student success and achievement at all levels. I sincerely thank all involved

for the work undertaken as enhanced collaboration within our school communities sets a great example for our students.

School development reports outline some amazing and encouraging initiatives and I am proud to see the great work being undertaken

by schools throughout the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District. Looking forward, I am optimistic about the progress

we will make as we continue to build upon these plans and continue to provide a quality education for every student in our District.

Sincerely,

CEO/Director of Education

Newfoundland and Labrador English School District

Message from Principal

The 2014-2015 school year was a great year at Bishop Feild Elementary. As a member of the administration team, I am pleased to present the school report. I would like to add that it was an exciting opportunity to share in the learning and spirit of the Bishop Feild School community. The school was in year three of the Department of Education school development cycle. In accordance with the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District’s strategic plan, the focus continued in the two main areas of academic achievement and safe and caring schools. The academic achievement goals focused on numeracy and literacy. The safe and caring school initiative continued to focus on our

community to create a safe and caring environment. This year, with the assistance of the school council, the school was able to improve our technology with the addition new smart boards. It has helped enhance and engage children in learning. In line with our technology strategy for academic achievement, this has proven to be a fabulous tool that engaged students in our math and language arts initiatives. Our mathematics initiatives, as well as our math club, have proven to be successful. The grade 4, 5 and 6’s competed in the Canadian National Mathematics League Contest and our grade 6 students were the Sixth Grade Mathematics League Regional Winner. Our literacy initiatives also provided many opportunities to make learning fun and engaging. Each year, we have an Arts and Letters display where children can express themselves through poetry and prose. We are also pleased to announce that Greta Warner who won the school’s spelling bee, went on to win the Telegram’s Spelling Bee and represented Newfoundland (and Bishop Feild) at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. Reading and writing are vital skills and we plan to continue to find new ways to encourage students and their families to embrace literacy and numeracy at home and at school. Each year, Bishop Feild has many special events and activities that create a vibrant community. This year the school council organized the Irish Descendants and Friends evening and a great time was had by all. In June, we had a very successful Feildian

Family Fun Day. It is our collaboration with peers, parents, and partners in education that fosters the learning at our school. Our focus on our school development goals serves as a foundation for growth and we see the “light of each person on Bond Street.” I would like to express my appreciation to the district, staff and school community for their support as we continue our educational journey together. Laurie L. Andrews Principal

Message from the School Council The 2014-2015 school year was a great year at Bishop Feild for our students and our school community. There were a number of successful new programs and fundraisers as well as great successes for our many talented students. They achieved much, receiving recognition academically, athletically, and artistically. The school council continued to work towards supporting and recognizing all of our teachers, staff and families who have helped students achieve so much in and out of the school and we are proud to support those efforts. Among the many programs offered at the school, the Kids Eat Smart breakfast program started up with great success, providing a nutritious breakfast to students twice a week. Thanks to the volunteers who helped make this possible and a special thanks to The Kids Eat Smart Foundation. The Council helped organize a fundraising concert at the school in early February featuring The Irish Descendants. This was made possible by the selfless work of the many parent and staff volunteers. Thanks to all involved and especially the performers who gave generously of their time and immense talents, Con O’Brien and the rest of The Irish Descendants, Adam Janes, Justin Nurse and his band Stixx n Stones, Dave Penny, Duane Andrews, Michelle Brophy, Rob Brown, and Toshio Oki. It was a great night. With the funds raised, the council was able to purchase 2 new Smart Boards and new U shaped tables to assist with small group instruction.

As well, the School Council organized a year end Family Fun Day. The Feildian Fun Day was a great success. BBQ, Canteen, Bouncy Castle, Face Painting, Kite Making, Bubbles, Sidewalk Chalk, music and even some live fiddlers. As well, all enjoyed our regular Christmas Bazaar, which as in previous years, brought back former students and parents to volunteer. As Chair, I would like to thank the staff, students, families and also the school board for a great year. I’m continually and joyously amazed at how brightly every light shines at Field. Our Council works shoulder to shoulder with the staff and families of Bishop Feild to enhance the learning of all students. I can think of nothing more rewarding. The serving members of the Bishop Feild School Council for 2014-2015 were: Teacher Reps Parent Reps Laurie Andrews, Principal Brad Stone, Chair Darlene Johnson, Assistant Principal Emily Sopkowe, Secretary Erin Power Nick Whalen Leslie Fram Bojan Furst Amy Flight Michelle Brophy

Partnerships

Kids Eat Smart

In the spring of 2014, Bishop Field partnered with the Kids Eat Smart Association to offer a healthy breakfast on Tuesdays and

Thursdays.

Suncor Energy Fluvarium

Suncor Energy, in collaboration with The Fluvarium, offered free educational trips for students to learn in their environment education

center.

Earth Rangers and Husky Oil

Earth Rangers is a Canadian kids' conservation organization dedicated to educating children and families about biodiversity and

empowering them to become directly involved in protecting animals and their habitat. Husky Oil supports this program and their visit

to Bishop Field.

St. John’s School Lunch Association and the Salvation Army

Bishop Feild is fortunate to have two community partners who provide non-stigmatizing food programs to our school so that no

child’s learning is negatively impacted by hunger.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary delivered a Drug Awareness Resistance Education (D.A.R.E) program at our school again

this year. An RNC Officer delivered the program to our grade sixes over 10 sessions ending with a graduation ceremony attended by

parents during which the students shared their learning and received certificates.

Newspapers in Education

Page 9: Bishop Feild School...empowering them to become directly involved in protecting animals and their habitat. Husky Oil supports this program and their visit to Bishop Field. St. John’s

Annual School Development Report Page 9

The Telegram continued to partner with us for several projects. Each day our school receives free Newspapers for each class and

curriculum support materials and study guides are provided for teachers. In addition, the telegram sponsors the local Spell Can

Spelling Bee competition. First and second place winners Linda Zhang and Greta Warner represented our school at the regional

competition this year.

Little Green Thumbs

Little Green Thumbs is an indoor gardening program that gives elementary and high school students the opportunity to become food

producers right in their own classroom. The hands on inquiry based education program helps young people value the health of

themselves, the environment and their community. Bishop Field applied and was accepted to participate in the Little Green Thumbs

Program. The grade 3’s and grade 6’s worked collaboratively in this program.

Santa Shuffle

The school’s running club participated in the Santa Shuffle. They raised money and ran or an event sponsored by the Salvation Army

to provide support for families in need at Christmas. The runners at Bishop Field received a plaque for the most funds raised by a

school.

Arts Smarts Program The school received funding for an arts programs. Local artists came into the grade 6 class and worked with students to produce

amazing art.

Daybreak Community Programs:

Daybreak runs a drop in play group for parents/caregivers and their children ages 0-6 every Friday morning at the school.

Y Program

The Y offers an after school program for students from grades 1-6. They are members of our school community.

What do these results tell us?

Except for 2013-2014, the data indicates that early readers in English program are struggling compared to regional and

provincial results. In 2013-2014, the class size was 10 students. The smaller class size was beneficial. Clearly early

intervention is needed and the focus of our action team was to create a small group learning environment through literacy

blocks.

These results indicate an upward 4 year trend in reading results in grade2 level at Bishop Field. In year four our results were

greater than regional and provincial standards. A continuation of guided reading and intensive word work will continue.

While at par with the region and province in most categories, this data shows that informational reading of text is an area that needs

focus. The data over four years indicates inconsistent results in informational reading. The school’s literacy action team has made this

a priority for the next school year to improve these skills.

An analysis of these results in Language Arts indicates that Bishop Field performed at or above the region or province in all

areas except demand writing. The literacy action team for LA has made this a focus of their literacy goals for 2015-2016.

Teachers will implement strategies to refine this skill. The four year trend suggests consistency in positive results at this grade
