    NEW ASTER ADVANCED BOOK: TOPIC -GRANDFATHER’S HOUSE (Chap. 1)

    SUMMARY:

    This story is about an orphaned girl, Heidi she is been sent to live with his grandfather who lives high who in the mountain called Alps. Previously Heidilived with her aunt Dete. When Heidi reached grandfathers house she saw there was a goat house at one side, there were three old fir trees at the back. When she went inside the house Heidi noticed there was only one big room, in which there was a fireplace with a table and a chair, in the other side was grandfather’s bed. There was also a cupboard in which grandfather kept all the necessary things. Later Heidi made a bed out of hay for herself. She was very excited for it. Before going to bed Heidi ate bread and cheese. She

  • enjoyed her meal. After finishing their meal grandfather made a chair for Heidi. In the evening the goats returned, grandfather took care of them. Next morning when Heidi woke up grandfather asked her to go up to the mountains with the goats. This made Heidi very happy.

    TOPIC – NOI SAVES A WHALE (Chap. 1)

    SUMMARY:

    Noi lived on an island with his father. After a stormy night Noi went on the beach to see what the things were washed up on the beach. He saw a baby whale was lying on the beach. He knew that the baby whale could not survive there for a long time. Noi lifted the baby whale in his cart brought it home and kept in the bathtub. When Noi’s father returned in the evening , Noi hidethe truth of keeping baby whale in his bathtub but Noi’s father discovered it and without scolding Noi, he explained that the baby whale cannot survive there. It must return to the place where it belongs. Later Noi and his father took the baby whale in a motorboat and put the baby whale back into the dark

  • sea. Noi was too sad to say goodbye to him because the baby whale was his only friend. Yet Noi was happy that his father was there with him and he hoped to see the baby whale again in future.

    WORD-MEANING:

    The narrator of this story is an orphan little boy of seven years. He lives in Norway with his grandmother after his parents dies in a car accident. His grandmother is a great storyteller. But she is an expert in the stories of witches. Before going to bed the narrator loved to hear stories from her. One day grandmother tells the story about fve missing children. The frst child who vanished was Ranghild Hansen. She went away with a tall lady, and was never seen after that. The second one who disappears was from the family the Christiansen, her name was Sloveg, she disappeared next day after she ate an apple given to her by a ladyacross the street. She became part of the canvas in their house. The third one was Birgit Sevenson, she turned into a chicken. The fourth one was a boy name Harald, he turned into granite. The ffth child was Leif, he was picnicking in fjoord. He dived into waterbut when he returned he wasn’t a boy, he turned into a porpoise. Little boy got frighten. But grandmother consoles him and said that he is safe in the house. No witches can harm him there. And then grandmother made him sleep in his bed.

    Ans. Children should be alert and careful. They shouldalways listen to their elder and parents to avoid such situations. If those disappeared children would have been careful enough, the witch would not have taken them.
