BACKGROUNDBishop Auckland Hospital is one of three traditional hospitals, including University Hospital
of North Durham and Darlington Memorial Hospital, that serve a large rural area with a population of 125,000 in County Durham and Darlington. For its local population, Bishop Auckland provides all routine care, both medical and surgical, including 24-hour ambulatory and emergency service.
OBJECTIVESTo redevelop existing buildings and build a new 320-bed general hospital for South Durham
Healthcare NHS Trust.
SOLUTIONEMCOR Drake & Scull provided design assistance, and mechanical and electrical construc-
tion services, as well as public health and medical gas expertise, for this three-stage project. Specific applications included air conditioning, cooling, closed-circuit television, and fire alarm and nurse call systems.
