The first industrial trip of our BMS IInd year was to the Bisleri international ltd.

Located at Andheri (east) on the 28th Dec, 2010 as planned

by our honorable director Dr. Sunil karve without whom this industrial visit would

not have been possible.

I express sincere thanks to Prof. SUVARNA SABLE who told us before what we

have to observe during the industrial visit

I would like to thanks Prof. GAURAV RATHOD and Prof. SAMEEKSHA RANE

who accompanied us during the industrial visit and helped us with their valuable

suggestion and thoughts during the industrial visit.

The trip was a great eye opener to our batch. After witnessing the processes and co

ordination of the various processes, students realized how Operations play a

significant part in the manufacturing and production sectors. Our lot of queries and

doubts were cleared up after this interactive-learning session.

INTRODUCTION

About industrial visit

The industrial visit is a very important part our management course. Outdoor

demonstrations like the industrial visit will create more interest; lengthy technical dissertations

dull the mind and tire the body. If the interest is to be maintained an industrial visit is must to be

planned.

The following things were observed when we visited Parle company-

A welcome by a senior executive

A short introduction about the firm. its history, organization products, photographs,

video, charts etc.

A short tour of the plant pinpointing the highlights of the production methods.

Explanation about the essence of manufacturing process was worthwhile.

We were accompanied by our faculty prof .Sameeksha Rane and prof. Gaurav Rathod.

About company

Mineral Water under the name 'Bisleri' was first introduced in Mumbai in glass bottles in

two varieties - bubbly & still in 1965 by Bisleri Ltd., a company of Italian origin. This company

was started by Signor Felecia Bisleri who first brought the idea of selling bottled water in India.

Parle bought over Bisleri (India) Ltd. In 1969 & started bottling Mineral water in glass bottles

under the brand name 'Bisleri'. Later Parle switched over to PVC non-returnable bottles & finally

advanced to PET containers.

Bisleri company value their customers & therefore have developed 8 unique pack sizes to suit

the need of every individual. They at present have 50ml cups, 250ml bottles, 500ml, 1L, 1.5L,

2L which are the non-returnable packs & 5L, 20L which are the returnable packs. Till date the

Indian consumer has been offered Bisleri water, however in their effort to bring to consumers

something refreshingly new, they have introduced Bisleri Natural Mountain Water – water

brought to you from the foothills of the mountains situated in Himachal Pradesh. Rigorous R&D

& stringent quality controls has made us a market leader in the bottled water segment. Strict

hygiene conditions are maintained in all plants.

TYPES OF PRODUCT

1. Bisleri with added Minerals:

Bisleri Mineral Water contains minerals such as magnesium sulphate and potassium bicarbonate which

are essential minerals for healthy living. They not only maintain the pH balance of the body but also help

in keeping you fit and energetic at all times.

Bisleri with added minerals is also put through multiple stages of purification to ensure the elimination

of all forms of bacteria. This makes the water you drink completely safe to consume. Bisleri with added

minerals is available in 250ml cups, 250ml bottles, 500ml bottles, 1 liter bottles, 1.5 liters bottles, 2 liters

bottles and 5 and 20 liters cans.

2. Bisleri Mountain Water:

Bisleri Natural Mountain emanates from a natural spring, located in Uttaranchal and Himachal nestled in

the vast Shivalik Mountain ranges. Lauded as today's 'fountain of youth', Bisleri Natural Mountain Water

resonates with the energy and vibrancy capable of taking you back to nature. Bisleri Natural Water is

bottled in its two plants in Uttaranchal and Himachal Pradesh and is available in six different pack sizes

of 250ml, 500ml, 1 liters, 1.5 liters, 2 liters and 5 liters.

PLANT LAYOUT

The subject plant layout refers to the arrangement of machinery, equipment and other

industrial facilities such as receiving and shipping departments, tool rooms, maintenance rooms

and employee amenities – for the purpose of achieving the quickest and smoothest production at

the least cost.

Bisleri plant at Andheri (E) has two different plants where the complete production takes

place. In the one plant the cap and the bottle performs are manufactured and the other plant has

the place for performs to be blown into bottles and the filling of the bottles is done. This building

also has the purification process of the water which has to be filled.Page | 7


An ideal plant location may not be enough by itself to ensure the success of the enterprise

but it surely ensures the smooth running of a factory and makes it efficient a bad location on the

other hand is severe handicap and it is very and may finally bankrupt the organisation. The need

for selection of the location may arise when a business is started or for the purpose of expansion

or for opening branches etc.

(A)Material: - The raw water is obtained from bore wells and the water which they have stored

during the rainy seasons. Without materials there can be no output. Material input may account

for as much as 80% of the value of the output. This fact indicates the importance to be attached

to material purchasing. The bottles are made from polymers such as HDPE, LLDPE and PET,

raw water, recycled, cartoons , stickers.

(B) Personnel: - Bisleri requires mostly skilled and semi skilled laborers. The skilled laborers

include production and plastic engineers.

( C) Capital assets : - Bisleri has got 14 injection moulding machines, 2 automatic blow

moulding machines and 4 semi automatic blow moulding machines. It has also got 2 plants

located side by side for production purposes.

GROUND WATER: The raw water is stored underground. During the rainy season bisleri

company stores water underground.

OZONISATION: Bisleri is the only company who does the ozonisation it is done on raw

materials. The process of ozonation ensures that the water remains free from bacteria, so that the

water can have a longer life and the machine used for this process of ozonation is called

ozonator.

PRE-FILTERATION: The process of filteration removes suspended particles from the water

by sand filteration

REVERSE OSMOSIS: This stage of reserve osmosis system controls and dissolves the leftover

Particles and it converts hard water into soft water.

MICRON FILTERATION: Under this stage of micro filtration additional safety measures are

taken to guarantee purity of water.

ADDED MINERALS: In this stage addition of mineral magnesium sulphate and potassium

bicarbonate is processed.

FINAL OZONISATION: The ozone treatment increases the shelf life of water. To ensure

mineral water is held safe free from contamination, ultraviolet treatment and ozonisation process

is carried out. Ozone is unstable trivalent oxygen, a very powerful bactericide with no side effect,

as it disintegrates into oxygen within couple of hours. Sterilization effect of ozonised water

continues even after water is packaged, thereby ensuring safety of Mineral Water up to its final

packing. To ensure high quality of packing materials, components like caps and bottles are

manufactured in-house from resins of quality suppliers.

FINAL PRODUCT: After going through all the departments like filling

department, ,blowing, ,grinding department the bottle is finally ready and it moves to the

packaging department.

OUTPUT:

The final output of the whole manufacturing process is the clean pure drinking water in the

bottles of different sizes according to the needs of the consumer.

Bisleri Company is very quality conscious. Quality is checked before the actual

production process starts.

Maintenance is done on regular basis.

Employees or workers wear caps to protect their head.

To drive inside the campus vehicle speed limit should be 10Km/ ph

Bisleri water is provided to the employees for drinking purpose.

Bisleri is the first company to increase its products in packaged drinking water ranging

from 500ml to 20 ltrs.

Bisleri should introduce new packaging of bottle.

Workers should be provided with mouth pieces to ensure hygiene during production

Proper storage of scrap

Have more systematic approach towards security of the plant.

Value added flavoured water like natural ayurvedic can also be added.

Fruit flavoured water can also be launched.

OPINION ABOUT INDUSTRIAL VISIT

Bisleri who has been in the past been facing tough competition from the other brands has

Adopted production management in a big way in order to maintain its lead in the packaged

Drinking water market.

This report on Bisleri International Pvt. Ltd has helped us in understanding various concepts and

applications related to Operations Management and its relevance to the organization. It also gave

us a deep insight into the fact that all these aspects are crucial to the organization.

This analysis, processes, review and recommendations provided in the report was a great

learning experience for us and we hope to reflect this learning in our future endeavors at work.
