PPRREEFFAACCEE -- MMUUAAYY TTHHAAIIHISTORYThe first historical records dealingwith organised unarmed fightingskills are ancient Egyptian in originand represent a crude type of templeboxing. Vikings, Saxons and theCeltic community competed furiouslybetween their battles of war forthousands of years BC

However, many scholars considerthat the ancient Greeks were the firstto evolve a more organised systemof combat. The Greeks were knownto have developed wrestling andboxing to quite high levels. Theirfighting skills in Pankration (game ofall powers) allowed them to use anytechnique they wished in unarmedcombat except for eye gouging. Asfar as we know, Pankration is thefirst recorded fighting discipline thatdevised a method of kicking andintegrated it with punches and emptyhand strikes.

This art quickly became a sport andwas introduced into the OlympicGames in 648 BC. Archaeologistshave recently unearthed a series ofBabylonian plaques depicting figuresin fighting stances using counterblocking techniques. These plaquesdate back more than 5000 years, perhaps indicating that there weresystemised methods of unarmedfighting around the fertile crescent inMesopotamia which later travelledeastward, to be developed by theIndians and then the Chinese.

Modern times, in particular thiscentury the martial arts, for whateverreason, have seen an incredibleupsurge in popularity, particularly inthe western world.

In the early years to middle of thiscentury Japanese Judo (TheSoft/Gentle Way) received acclaimworld wide as both a sport and self-defence. 1964 saw Judo introducedto the Tokyo Olympic Games, and tothe amazement of the worldaudience and especially theJapanese, the first open championand gold medallist was AntonGeesinkm, a Dutchman.

The next martial art to sweep theentire world was Karate. Contrary topopular belief the Japanese hadnever heard of Karate prior to 1922.The word Karate now means emptyhand (in 17th century Okinawa, thecharacter for kara meant Chinaand te meant hand). The correctrendering for the name of the art isKarate-do, the word do meansway. But in the 1930s the Japanesechanged the meaning of kara toempty.

While Judo was already booming, the big break for Karate was whenthe new modernised Japanese navysailed in Chujo Bay, Okinawa. TheImperial Japanese fleet underAdmiral Dewa was invited to a hugebanquet. During this feast variousdemonstrations were arranged forthe visitors, one being performed bya mild mannered school teacher,Gichin Funakoshi, who revealed his

own Karate approach. Admiral Dewawas so impressed that, on his returnto Japan, he told the Emperor aboutthis unarmed combat. The emperor invited Funakoshi toKyoto to give a private demonstrationof Karate and this was how, in 1917,Okinawa-te was introduced to thecountry.

However, it was not until April 1st,1922, when Funakoshi was invitedagain to the Japanese Ministers ofNational Education to give a formaldemonstration at a girls school inTokyo, that the Japanese public sawthe art of the empty hand. It was agreat success and two years laterKeio University founded Japans firstKarate Dojo.

The next world acclaim to the martialarts was the introduction ofTaekwondo (Way of the Hand andFoot), a version of fighting, takenoriginally from an ancient Koreanunarmed combat method. Thismartial art is very much a modernconcept, but with roots stretchingback almost 2000 years to theindigenous native style of Tae Kyon.

The name Taekwondo came intobeing at a conference of masters in1955 when General Choi Hong Hisubmitted this particular namebecause it closely resembled thetraditional name of Tae Kyon.

The considerable Japanese martialarts influence on Taekwondo is aconsequence of their militaryoccupation of Korea from 1907-1945.

Since then the art has developed intoa modern international sport and in

July 1980 the International OlympicCommittee decided to include it inthe 1988 Olympics in Seoul.

1973 saw the death of the worldsmost controversial martial artist.Bruce Lees constant mediaexposure, his now infamous motionpictures and his person literarycontributions exposing Chinese KungFu (The Way of Perfection) towestern society are all historicallydocumented.

Bruce Lee and the era he createdwere the turning point of the so-called traditional-thinking martialartists. He developed the concept ofmodern thinking within the industryand a healthy mixing and combiningof the various styles and systems, ona global level.

    PRESENT & FUTURE

Muay Thai Boxing - The livingfear of all untruths .During the last decade the westernworld has been exposed to more andmore of Southeast Asian styles, toonumerous to mention for the purposeof this text, except one, definitely bynature the most effective of all themartial arts, from the ancientkingdom of Siam (now Thailand).

Muay Thai, to give the boxing art itscorrect name, with its easterninfluence mixed into westernkickboxing during recent years, is thereason for the increase inkickboxings popularity.

The evolution of Australian Kickboxing has changed face with a history spanning20 years.

In 1976, the Bob Jones Corporation promoted Australias inaugural Kickboxingevent. A two fight card featuring Dave Berry and Glenn Ruehland(Middleweights) and Dennis Dunstan and Bruce Hylands (Lightweights). Daveand Dennis both won their bouts.

This was the introduction of Australian Rules Kickboxing. That is, QueensburyBoxing rules and kicks above the waist. In 1983, leg kicks were introduced to thiscountry under the banner of USA (American) rules. The World Kickboxing Association (WKA) defines these as Kickboxing rules.

In March 1986, the Bob Jones Corporation began training at Sidyothong Camp,Thailand. Rod Stroud (Perth W.A.) introduced grappling and knee kicks intoAustralia, thus International Rules. The WKA refer to these rules as Thai-Boxing. With the inclusion of elbows -World Rules, the WKA refer to contests as Thai-Fighting.

Thus, the BJC Muay Thai - system was introduced to train people for SelfDefence and as a means of developing what is the worlds most exciting andpowerful sport.
