Welcome to North Iceland!

North Iceland is an extensive, enchanting region, where you can find most of Iceland’s attractive aspects all in one area - varied culture and flourishing communities, endless opportunities for entertainment and outdoor recreation, picturesque nature wherever you look and more natural phenomena than almost anywhere else. Some wish to go walking, swimming or golfing, while others choose fishing, hunting, horseriding, or even something more adventurous, such as whale watching , river rafting or Heli-Skiing. Wherever you go, there is, something on offer to suit everyone. All types of excursions to explore the area, the islands and the highlands to view extraordinary landscapes, mountain ranges, hot springs, waterfalls, glacial rivers, volcanic craters and other geological features. A tour into the Highlands is an experience never to be forgotten. All seasons of the year bring an array of breathtaking colours , and all seasons have their own charm in the North of Iceland. In the summer the light nights have a romantic uniqueness, and in the winter the northern lights dance in the cold sky, and the darkness itself provides inspiration and spiritual uplifting.

North Iceland Marketing Office, located in the town of Akureyri, is responsible for marketing and promoting North Iceland in the tourism industry. The goal of North Iceland Marketing Office is to strengthen the image of North Iceland and promote it as the ideal tourist destination for visitors to Iceland. The Marketing Office is owned by the two tourist associations in the north of Iceland; the Tourist Association of Northwest Iceland Ltd. and the Tourist Association of Northeast Iceland Ltd.

By air:

If you want to fly north there are two domestic airline companies that offer scheduled flights to Saudarkrokur, Akureyri, Grimsey and Thorshofn. Check the domestic airlines: Flugfelag Islands, www.flugfelag.is and www.ernir.is.

In the summertime there are direct fligths to Akureyri airport from Copenhagen and London –Gatwick. Check www.icelandexpress.com for availability. Charter flights / Sightseeing flights: If the scheduled flights do not suit your itinerary, you can contact these airlines for special charter flights: www.flugfelag.is, www.ernir.is and www.myflug.is. The airline Myflug specializes in sightseeing flights around the Myvatn area during the summer season. Check their homepage www.myflug.is for further information.

By road / bus: There are two companies that run scheduled bus tours to the north; SBA and TREX - bilar og folk. They operate 6 days a week in winter and 7 days a week in summer. The distance from Reykjavik to Akureyri is 380km, and the trip takes about 6 1/2 hrs. For further information and bus schedules, check their homepages at www.sba.is and www.bogf.is

By road / car: Renting a car and driving yourself is another option. The Ring Road No. 1, lies right round the island and is mostly an asphalted two-lane road. The distance from Reykjavik to Akureyri is 380km, and the trip takes about 4 1/2 hrs. Check the homepage of the road administrator at www. vegagerdin.is for distances and road conditions. If you are coming from Europe, it is possible to bring your own vehicle by the ferry, Smyril Line. This sails from Denmark, via the Faroe Islands, to Seydisfjordur, on the east coast of Iceland. For further information check www.smyril-line.dk

Laugarbakki is situated on the east bank of Midfjardara river, close to Ring Road No. I. The formely boarding school now houses the primary school of the district in winter and an Edda hotel during the summer. According to the Saga of Grettir the Strong, horse fights (hestaat) were performed at the river banks, at Langafit. Today, Langafit is the name of an open crafts workshop. But Grettir the Strong is still around … as Grettisbol is housing a farmers market with crafts and local food inspired by the Saga age. Enclosed is a playgarden, where young and old can enjoy viking games or just relax. Other services at Laugarbakki are a fuel station, camping ground, overnight facilities and jacuzzis. From Laugarbakki, the road leads to the highland Arnarvatnsheidi. www.northwest.is. Population around 65.

The prospering Hvammstangi is the main town in Hunathing vestra, situated on the eastern shore of Midfjorður fjord. The most important economic base is service and tourism. Two museums are located at Hvammstangi, the Museum of Local Trade, housing an excellent crafts gallery, and the Icelandic Seal Center (Selasetur Islands). Seals can be seen by boat, cruising from Hvammstangi harbour during the summer. Other services are a super market, garages, a quiet and pittoresk camping site, cafés, guesthouses, Wool Factory Shop, diner and fuel station, along with tourist information, health care center and a fine swimming pool.Further informations on the services of Hvammstangi: www.northwest.is. Skagastrond used to earn its living on the fishing industry. Time has changed and other businesses grown. Kantrybær is a known restaurant and the country king, Hallbjorn Hjartarson, runs the Country Radio FM 96.7. In the summertime Café Bjarmanes is open in an old house down by the sea. Arnes is a museum that shows the facilities and living conditions in the early 20th century. Over hundred artists from all over the world stay and work at Nes Artist Residency every year. The Church is open every day in the summertime. The camping place is beautiful; the swimming pool is cozy and the golf course is exciting and challenging. There are popular walking paths on the Spakonufellshofdi cape and Spakonufell (639 m). Brochures about both are available around town. The population of Skagastrond is about 520 people. Blonduos is situated on the eastern coast of Hunafloi and lies on both sides of the Blanda river. Upstream from the bridge over Blanda is Hrutey Island, a park that was protected in 1975. Blonduos‘s main economic activities include various services for the local agricultural area, food processing and production, light industry and travel services in addition to public services such as healthcare, education and administration. Handcraft and Textile museum, the only one of a kind in Iceland, is to be found in Blonduos. You will also find a Sea Ice Exhibition Centre in the old part of the town. Saudarkrokur is the largest town in northwest Iceland. Located along the southwest shore on the innermost part of Skagafjordur fjord, settlement began in 1871. Today the economy is primarily based on fishing and fish processing, industry and the provision of services, particularly for agriculture. Saudarkrokur is the educational centre for the region. Varmahlid is a village in Skagafjordur, by Ring Road No. 1. Since 1931 local services and catering have been the primary economy of the people of Varmahlid. A school, services to the agricultural industry, shops and tourist services are the main economic factors. Geothermal heat provides heating for houses. Hofsos is a small village on the eastern shore of Skagafjordur fjord. At one time it was the region’s main trading centre, and is one of the oldest still in existence. It is believed that trading started there in the 16th century. Pakkhusid, an old warehouse dating back to the days of the Danish trade monopoly, has been restored and now houses the Skagafjordur Regional Folk Museum. In addition, a local museum named The Icelandic Emigration Centre, has been opened, where the emigration of Icelanders to North America is illustrated and recounted. Holar in Hjaltadalur is one of Iceland’s best-known historical sites. From 1106 -1801 it was an episcopal see, as well as being the main regional centre. The current cathedral at Holar was consecrated in 1763, and has since been restored to its original state. It is made of red sandstone that was transported from the mountain Holabyrda above the village. A turf farmhouse dates from 1854, and was still occupied until the middle of the 20th century. Siglufjordur stands by a fjord of the same name, out on the Trollaskagi Peninsula. This town was the main fisheries centre in the first half of the 20th century, as harbour conditions were good. For some years it was the largest herring centre in Iceland with a population of 3,100. The town was very isolated until a tunnel was built through Mt. Strakar in 1967; the first tunnel to be built in Iceland. There is a museum in the town that commemorates the “herring years.” More information at www.fjallabyggd.is/english/Population about 1300.

The village of Olafsfjordur is situated by a fjord of the same name that cuts into Trollaskagi Peninsula. It was first settled at the beginning of the 19th century and has a good natural harbour, which is of vital importance to a town whose economy is based on fisheries. A tunnel, 3.4 km long cuts through Olafsfjardarmuli, connecting Olafsfjordur to the Eyjafjordur region. Further information at www.fjallabyggd.is/english/. Population about 880.

Dalvik11

Dalvik is a seaside town, located on the natural paradise of Trollaskagi Peninsula on the west coast of Eyjafjordur Fjord. Recreation available for tourists in the area includes a well equipped swimming pool, a museum, skiing facilities, a golf course, sea angling, whale watching, bird watching and horse rental. There are multiple hiking trails in the area and we recommend trying these, led by one of our top class guides. More information can be obtained from our website www.dalvik.is/EN/. Population about 1400.

The island Hrisey is a natural pearl of nature lying out in the middle of the Eyjafjordur Fjord. In Hrisey there is a small fishing village with services such as an outdoor swimming pool, a small guesthouse, restaurant, camping site, café and shop. The island has rich birdlife and several hiking paths. Among the main “things to do” are: a tractor-driven sightseeing trip around the island, a visit to the local shark museum where you will find information about shark fishing as well as the local history. After that, there is a real treat in store; a chance to taste the island’s speciality, the blue mussel. There are scheduled ferry crossings to and from Hrisey Island from the village Arskogssandur. Two small sea villages are located at Arskogsstrond on the west coast of Eyjafjordur Fjord. Arskogssandur, with approximately 140 inhabitants and Hauganes, with about 130. In both villages, fishing and fish processing ar the main employment. From the harbour in Arskogssandur the ferry Saevar sails to Hrisey island. Arskogsstrond is only a 20 minutes drive from Akureyri. Recreation on offer includes a open farm with Icelandic animals, whale watching, laser tag and paintball, a visit to a local brewery and various day trips. Hjalteyri is a small village on the western shore of Eyjafjordur, and was one of the centres of the herring industry in the early 20th century. Today there is an experimental fish farm in Hjalteyri that hatches halibut.

Akureyri bustles with life all year round. The town’s 17,500 residents make it the most populated town by far outside the capital city, Reykjavik. It is an entrepreneurial and service centre for the whole of North Iceland. It is also a town built on a firm foundation of culture and education. Two of Iceland’s largest fishing companies operate from Akureyri and the town is a popular tourist destination for foreigners as well as Icelanders. The town itself has much to offer, e.g. all kinds of services, activities, nightlife and recreational areas – all within the municipal boundaries. Reykarhverfi / Eyjafjardarsveit16

Hrafnagil in Eyjafjardarsveit was once a chieftains‘s estate and a church site. Today it is the centre of Reykarhverfi, a small community with a service center for visitors. Eyjafjardarsveit has many attractions, such as the Christmas Garden, The Elf Gallery, a swimming pool and serveral beautiful old churches. In the beginning of August every year a handicrafts festival is held in Hrafnagil. Eyjafjardarsveit is a thriving agricultural community, one of the best in Iceland. Population about 1000.

Svalbardseyri is a village on Svalbardsstrond, which lies on the eastern shore of Eyjafjordur fjord. Svalbardseyri was once a trading centre, but today its economy is based on providing services. The residents mainly work in neighbouring communities. Population about 230.

Grenivik is located on a cove of the same name on the eastern shore of Eyjafjordur fjord. The small fishing village, which began to develop during the first decade of the 20th century, grew significantly after a new harbour was constructed in 1965. Among services to be found in Grenivik are a Guesthouse, a horse rental, open farm and a Fisheries museum. Population about 260.

Laugar in Reykjadalur is situated in an active geothermal area. It has a district school and sports centre, a summer hotel, a good swimming pool and an athletic track.

Grimsey19

Grimsey Island is the northernmost settlement in Iceland. It is 5.3 square kilometres and lies 41 km from the mainland. At its highest point, the island is 105 m above sea level, and is crossed by the Arctic Circle at 66° N. Grimsey is well vegetated and a great place to watch birds like the Puffin. The economy of the inhabitants is mainly based on fisheries. A ferry serves the island several times a week from the town Dalvík and flights are provided from Akureyri several times a week during winter and daily during summer. Every visitor coming to Grimsey receives a certificate for having crossed the Arctic Circle. More information at www.grimsey.is/english.Population about 100.

Reykjahlid is a small community by Lake Myvatn, one of the highlights of the north. Known for its geothermal activity and phenomenal nature. All major services are provided in Reykjahlid, such as a supermarket, bank, post office, health care centre, school and swimming pool. At Lake Myvatn, different types of accommodation are available as well as good restaurants and cafés. Birdlife by the lake is abundant and a visit to the new Bird Museum is worthwhile, perhaps followed by a relaxing dip in the Myvatn Nature Bath. From Reykjahlid there are many marked hiking routes. Husavik, on the eastern shore of the Skjalfandi bay, is the largest town in the county of Thingeyarsysla and provides the services needed for the neighbouring communities. Husavik is known for its fascinating whale watching trips in Skjalfandi Bay and for the Husavík Whale Centre, an informative museum on whales. The Husavik museum and the Icelandic Phallological Museum are also both well worth visiting. Husavik is considered to be the oldest settlement in Iceland. The Swedish explorer, Gardar Svavarsson, spent one winter there in 870 AD during which time he built himself a house from which the settlement derives its name. In Husavik, visitors can find different types of accommodation, restaurants and cafés. A pleasant botanical garden is close to the centre and a golfcourse, swimming pool and campsite are in the town’s vicinity. More information at www.visitnortheasticeland.is.

Raufarhofn, one of the northernmost settlements in Iceland, is situated on the eastern shore of Melrakkasletta, with the Arctic circle lying just off shore. The fishing industry has been the village’s main economic activity and during the herring years in the middle of the 20th century, this was a flourishing community. Today, Raufarhofn is adapting its image to cater for tourists with all the required services, such as a shop, bank, health care centre, garage, hotel, camping facilities and an indoor swimming pool. From Raufarhofn there are boat tours for visitors to the Arctic Circle. More information at www.visitnortheasticeland.is. Population about 250.

Kopasker is a fishing village on the eastern shore of Oxarfjordur fjord. The main economy is based on services to the farms in the area as well as fisheries. In Kopasker, the local museum at Snartarstadir is worth visiting, as well as the Earthquake Center, describing the big Earthquake of 1976. In Kopasker there is a shop, garage, health care centre, bank, campsite and guesthouses. North of Kopasker is the peninsula Melrakkasletta, with its abundant birdlife, and also the northernmost point of mainland Iceland, Hraunhafnartangi. More information at www.visitnortheasticeland.is. Thorshofn is a fishing village, situated on the eastern shore of Thistilfjordur fjord. The main economy is based on fishing and fish processing and there is always a lively bustling atmosphere around the harbour. Thorshofn provides various services to the surrounding countryside as well as to its visitors and there is a shop, restaurant, swimming pool, bank, health care centre, guesthouse and campsite. Bakkafjordur is a small fishing village lying by the fjord of the same name. A good harbour, makes fishing from small vessels and fish processing the main economic base. From Bakkafjordur, boat trips and sea angling is possible. A shop, guesthouse and campsite are available. Just outside the village is a marked hiking route to the lighthouse at Digranes and the Vidvik cove, a distance of about 8 km. In Selardalur, about 30 km from Bakkafjordur, there is a pleasant outdoor swimming pool close to the salmon river Sela. More information at www.visitnortheasticeland.is. Population about 80.

A 15 m-high sea stack just off shore on the eastern side of Vatnsnes. Good seal spotting place at the estuary of the Sigridarstadir lake, south from the stack.

Cluster of hills of all sizes across the mouth of Vatnsdalur valley. Thought to have been formed by a catastrophic landslide. These hills are considered to be one of the three “innumerables” things in Iceland along with the lakes in Arnarvatnsheidi and the islands on Breidarfjord in the west.

4 Spakonufellshofdi

Spakonufellshofdi rises west of Skagastrond village and offers a variety of easy hiking routes. It is a popular destination for people wanting to enjoy the beautiful nature where the ocean, various bird species and the majestic circle of mountains embrace the senses. Most of the hiking trails are quite short and many of them have signs with information about birds and plants. Spakonufellshofdi offers excellent view of the mountains and valleys to south and north and to Strandir area across the panoramic Hunafloi Bay. Here, by the extreme sea, you can always enjoy nature no matter how the weather is. A brochure about Spakonufellshofdi is available in shops and restaurants in Skagastrond.

5 Arnarvatnsheidi

“Eagle Lake moors” is a larg green, lake-studded landscape in the highland, south of Húnaflói. The area extends for 80km or so south to the glaciers of Eiriksjokul and Langjokul. It´s a popular trout fishing venue in a wild, lonely nature. 4WD track.

The “hub” of the Kjolur Route, is a geothermal area of fumaroles, and multicoloured hot pools. There are two mountain huts with kitchen facilities and a nice hot pool just outside the hut.

The rocky island in the middle of Skagafjordur is a flat topped mass of tuff, rising almost 200 meters out of the ocean. The cliffs serve as nesting sites for around million sea birds and have been used throughout Iceland´s history for egg collection and bird netting. Grettis Saga recounts that both Grettir and his brother Illugi lived on Drangey, for three years and were slain there. The island can only be ascended at one spot. Boat tours to the island from Fagranes and Saudarkrokur.

The region includes the Skagi Peninsula, the Skagafjordur Islands, and the Héradsvotn Delta. The district is well known for its horse breeding and to be one of the most historically famous district in Iceland, during the Sturlungaoldin (The Sturlung Era).

A rugged peninsula, which lies between Skagafjordur and Eyjafjordur. It´s a maze of mountains, rivers and number of miniature glaciers. Ideal hiking country, maps available.

Is one of the longest fjords in Iceland with several valleys branching out from it. The district is known for its good agricultural conditions and many fishing towns and villages e.g. Akureyri, Dalvik, Olafsfjordur, Hrisey, Arskogssandur and Grenivik. The island Hrisey in the middle of Eyjafjordur is the second largest island off the coast of Iceland and often referred to as “The Pearl of Eyjafjordur”.

The waters of Olafsfjordur Lake, reflects Olafsfjordur town along with the mountains and the sky, and occasionally a trout breaks the surface, as a reminder of what is up and what is down in this mysterious mountain retreat. The lake has a long-lived reputation for mystery, not least because both fresh-water and salt-water fish are caught in it.

8 Hjaltadalur

In Hjaltadalur one of Iceland´s best-known historical site, Holar, is situated. Holar was the northern bishopric from 1106 as well as the educational capital of the north. The current Cathedral at Holar was consecrated in 1763. The University in Holar has been operated since 1882. Nice hiking trails and aquarium. Accommodation, restaurant and camping.

13 Grimsey island

Is the northern most point of Iceland situated on the Arctic Circel. It is the home to one hundred people, one million seabirds and one of the biggest Puffin colonies in Iceland. It is a great place to enjoy the midnight sun around the summer solstice. A ferry serves the island several times a week from the town Dalvík and flights are provided from Akureyri several times a week during winter and daily during summer.

Kjarnaskogur

Laugafell

South of Akureyri is Iceland´s most visited “forest” Kjarnaskogur woods. The area has 2km long athletic course, walking tracks, picnic tables and children´s playground. Campsite at nearby Hamrar.

An oasis in the barren land between the glacier Hofsjokull and Vatnajokull. The site is about 25km to the west of the best known highland route “Sprengisandur”. On the north-western slopes of the mountain Laugafell, there are geothermal hot springs bubbling and three mountain huts open in summer, with kitchen facilities and a nice geothermal nature pool outside.

14 Hlidarfjall

The ski area at Mt. Hlidarfjall lies at the bottom of one of the biggest fjords in Iceland surrounded by high mountains ranging from 1000 to 1538 meters over sea level. The ski area is 5 km above the town Akureyri. The area has 6 ski lifts, 23 alpine slopes and 15 km of cross country tracks, ski cafés, ski rental and a ski school. Snow production systems ensure a long season from end of November till beginning of May.

In upper Bardardalur, one of Iceland´s most photogenic waterfalls flows over a layer of intriguing basalt columns on the Skjalfandafljot river. More basalt patterns can be seen in the shallow canyon above the falls.

The most common highland route in Iceland crossing from north to south. The route is a 4WD track, crossing rivers and rough terrain. On a clear day the view to the glaciers is magnificent and the vast interior is unbelievable. Only passable in summer.

18 Godafoss

“Waterfall of the Gods” is on the river Skjalfandafljot, just off the Ring Road by Fossholl. The name of the waterfall refers to the incident when Thorgeir the Lawspeaker, riding home to his farm at Ljosavatn, after ruling at the Thingvellir assembly in the year 1000, that Iceland should adopt christianity, tossed his carvings of the Norse gods into the fall, taking the faith himself.

17 Fjordur

The peninsula between Eyjafjordur and Skjalfandi Bay is a paradise for hikers. Two 4WD tracks lead to the north of the peninsula, one to Hvalvatnsfjordur and the other to Flateyjardalur. No services, but camping allowed in specific areas.

21 MyvatnThe Myvatn basin sits squarely on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Although most of the interesting sights are volcanic or geothermal features, the centrepiece is the 37 sq km lake Myvatn itself, which averages a depth of only 2.5m. The lake contains over 50 islands and islets, mostly pseudocraters formed when molten lava flowed into the lake. Places of interest include the pseudocraters at Skutustadir, Hofdi peninsula, Dimmuborgir lava formations, Hverfjall/fell Crater, Hverir hotspring area, Krafla volcanic area and Myvatn Nature Bath. Myvatn is considered one of the best birdwatching place in Iceland.

The Skjalfandi Bay is situated between Kinnarfjoll mountains and the peninsula of Tjornes. The town of Husavik is on the eastern shore of the bay. Skjalfandi is considered to be one of the best areas for whale watching in Iceland. Tours leave from Husavik.

A stubby peninsula between Skjalfandi and Oxarfjord. Layers of fossil shells and lignite can be found on the coastal cliffs down from Ytri-Tunga farm on the western side of Tjornes. Colonies of puffins and other sea birds nest on the cliffs along the eastern coast.

Is a well forested horse-shoe shaped canyon in Oxarfjordur. Asbyrgi is a part of the Vatnajokull National Park. The national park reaches from highway 85, by Asbyrgi south to Dettifoss, covering an area of 120 km2. Informative visitors centre, shop, golf course and camping is located by Asbyrgi. Many hiking tracks.

27 Melrakkasletta

A remote headland between Oxarfjordur and Thistilfjordur. On the western side the red coloured, 73 m high rock formation Raudinupur can be found. Further north the peninsula Hraunhafnartangi is the northernmost point of the Icelandic mainland, only 3km south of the Arctic Circle.

28 Raudanes

South of Vidarfjall, midway between Raufarhofn and Thorshofn the cape Raudanes is located. This small but scenic peninsula is endowed with steep cliffs full of nesting birds, caves, offshore sea stacks and an exposed rock face, Stakkatorfa.

26 Dettifoss

The waterfall with the greatest volume of any waterfall in Europe, 500 cubic metres of water per second plunges over the edge. Dettifoss is 45 m high and 100m wide. A nice hiking trail, 34km, goes along the canyon from Dettifoss to Asbyrgi. Camping possible in Vesturdalur.

25 Jokulsargljufur

Declared one of Iceland´s National Parks in 1973. Reaching from Asbyrgi to Dettifoss along the canyon of the glacier river Jokulsa. Jokulsa is one of the most powerful glacial rivers in Iceland and the second-longest, 206km.

29 Langanes A narrow peninsula between Þistilfjordur and Bakkafloi shaped like a goose with a very large head. This area is about as wild as coastal Iceland gets, perfect for exploring off the beaten track. A rough road goes to the tip named Fontur. On the north and south of the tip there are steep sea cliffs, Skoruvikurbjarg and Skalavikurbjarg. The Langanes peninsula is know for its rich birdlife, and a very good birdwatching spots where it is possible to watch the Gannet and Brünnichs Guillermot from land.

Mt. Herdubreid on the Oskjuleid Route is a 1682m high table mountain. It is the national mountain of Iceland and often called the “Queen of Icelandic mountains”. There is a hiking trail to the top of the mountain, but due to loose rock it´s difficult and steep.

Askja is a 50 km2 caldera in the Dyngjufjoll mountains. In an eruption in 1875, an area of 11 km2 on the south-eastern side of Askja caved in to form Lake Oskjuvatn, the deepest lake in Iceland, 217m and a tephra crater known as Viti (Hell) north of it.

Kverkfjoll is a big massif on the northern edge of Vatnajokull glacier, lodged between two tongues from the main cap, Dyngjujokull and Bruarjokull. Here on the rim of the ice is one of the greatest geothermal fields in Iceland. Interesting Ice cave is on the edge of the glacier about 3 km from the Mountain Hut.

Outside the organized ski areas the possibilities for backcountry skiing are endless with the Troll Peninsula being the center of activity. Fishing / HuntingMany of Iceland’s leading salmon and trout streams and rivers are located in the North. Fresh and unpolluted, they receive the salmon in summer and provide it with optimal conditions. Not to be forgotten are the numerous lakes near lowland farms, among lofty mountains, or up in the highlands. These lakes are replete with energetic arctic char and muscular brown trout that provide a dream catch for the fisherman. Those wishing to fish on the deep blue ocean can choose sea angling, with departures from several harbours; see the chapter on boat tours.For fishing permits and availability, please contact the tourist information centres all over the north of Iceland.

Hunting and shooting game is also becoming popular in the north. In autumn it is possible to hunt the Greylag goose and in November-December ptarmigan shooting is allowed over a certain period. Every year hunting permits are sold for reindeer in the north east of the country. For further information on these sports, please contact tourist information centres in the north.

Sheep/horse Round-up in September

Horse round-upNowhere in the Iceland are more horses gathered in the round-ups than in the north of Iceland. Hundreds of horses are herded into the mountains in July, then, at the end of September and the beginning of October, farmers drive both sheep and horses down from their summer pastures in the highlands to lower land – just as they have done for centuries. The main round-ups are Viðidalstungurett in Húnathing-vestra, Skrapatungurett in East Hunavatnssysla and Laufskalarétt in Skagafjordur.

Sheep round-upThe rounding up of sheep usually occurs during the month of September in the north of Iceland. This takes place in all districts and if you are interested, please check with tourist information centres in each district for further details on time and location.

Geothermal Swimming and bathingSwimming is a very popular activity all year round in Iceland. Most towns and villages in the north have outdoor and/or indoor swimming pools filled with water from natural hot springs. National Parks / Nature ReservesBig part of Vatnajokull National Park, Europe´s largest National Park, is in the north of Iceland. The canyon of Jokulsa river is the northern most part of the National Park. There are several interesting places to visit in the park such as Dettifoss waterfall, Holmatungur, Hljodaklettar and Asbyrgi. Birdwatching The North of Iceland is a great place for birdwatching. The sea cliffs around the coast are teeming with birds such as puffins, gulls and guillemots, while the lakes and moors of the north provide an excellent habitat for ducks and waders.
