Apartheid – an Introduction to “Once Upon a Time” From the Afrikaans word for “apartness.” Used as the political slogan for the National Party in the 1940s, and was a common term since 1652. Separated citizens of South Africa into 4 racial groups: Bantu (black African), White Coloured (of mixed race) Asian (Indians and Pakistanis) Laws passed in the 1950s completely separated people of the above racial categories from interacting with one another. Used as the political slogan for the National Party in the 1940s, and was a common term since 1652.

Black political groups opposed apartheid and used violence, demonstrations, strikes, and sabotage to earn a voice.

The international community denounced apartheid in 1961

1990 the South African government began to dismantle Apartheid.

1994 a free general election introduced Nelson Mandela as South Africa’s first black president.
