In a relatively short amount of time, Pope Francis has captured the attention of

Catholics and non-Catholics alike with his refusal to judge people by their sexualorientation, reproductive decisions or religious beliefs. So unusual is the new Popeshumility and tolerance that I seem to hear people talking about it wherever I go. As a

woman next to me on the train recently put it he talks like hes actually a Christian!

A number of readers have requested that I look at the Popes chart. In their emails, theyve mentioned that it must be a remarkable chart because he appears to be aremarkable man. But from an astrological point of view, every chart is potentially

remarkable. Why? Because each of our charts contain a number of potentials, which, ifrealized in a positive way, can have a powerful impact in the world. That said, its worth

taking a quick look at the Popes chart to get a glimpse at a few of the themes that arerunning through it. As always, the chart is below and the notes follow:

To begin, Ive said this before and will never tire of repeating it: you cannot judge a chartor a person by a Sun sign. It simply cannot and should not be done. At the very, veryleast we want to look at the Sun and the Moon, and after that the Ascendant and

Mercury. With a daily motion of around 12.5 degrees, the Moon moves through all thesigns every month. Mercury symbolizing communication and thought also moves

fairly quickly, though not as fast the Moon. Finally, the Ascendant and all the angles ofthe chart for that matter changes degrees every 4 minutes. Simply put, each of us is in

motion at all times, no matter how solid or unchanging we might feel.

But not enough talk. Lets start with the theSun/Moon combination. Please read the

    following carefully.

This combination quickens the intuitions, and enlarges the views; it gives ability to deal

with the multitude, and with associations and public bodies; but there is a liability toover-exertion. It increases the qualities of imagination, wonder and sublimity, and givessome attraction to the occult side of life. It will cooperate with any planetary positionsthat tend towards higher education and mental cultivation, or to religion, philosophy,

metaphysics, or any form of original thought or scientific investigation. It is also a goodcombination for commercial life, or any calling where the personality comes

    prominently before others.

If you think the above was written with the Pope in mind, think again. That descriptionof the Sun/Moon combination was written about 30 years before the Pope was born. To

my eyes, it captures an essence, a theme, a thread of development that we should bealert for.

With the Ascendant in Cancer, ruled by the Moon, we now look more closely at what theMoon is doing. Its in Aquarius, a highly social sign where its comfortable relating to

large groups, unusual ideas, etc. It is tightly conjunct Venus, also in Aquarius, suggesting that there is a sense of idealism, a desire (Venus) for a greater good though

we cannot tell what the individual believes that greater good might be.

Lastly, we look at the critical placement of Mercury, marked with an exclamation pointat the far right of the chart. It is on the angle of the Public and conjunct the fixed star,Nunki. Lets look at an older astrology text for what meanings Nunki might suggest:

With Mercury conjunct the fixed star of Nunki, we get strength of character, adetermination to succeed, optimism, religiously beneficial, straight-forwardness, an

    outspoken nature.

Once again, the phrase religiously beneficial precedes the birth of the Pope by anumber of years.

If we take the above descriptions and there are many more measurements available we get a sense of the potential contained in the chart. Does it tell us everything? Of

course not, but it does describe a potential path, a sensibility, anessencethat will try toactivate itself in the world. And so it is true for all of us in one way or another. As the

Sufi writer Idries Shah has pointed out, the question is not do I have a chance buthave I seen my chance?

    Seekers After Truth

What happens when a fictional spiritual guru develops real disciples? No, Im nottalking about Pat Robertson but about the documentary, Kumare.

The story is simplicity itself: frustrated by fake spiritual teachers, New Jersey-born

filmmaker Vikram Gandhi learned yoga, grew a beard and then flew to Arizona topreach an entirely made-up philosophy to seekers after truth. If that sounds like a hugedeception, youre right. But what elevates this documentary from something potentiallyunpleasant and embarassing is what happens to both Gandhi who went by the name

Sri Kumare and the handful of people who begin to follow him. That group includes astressed-out death penalty lawyer, a reformed cocaine addict and a lonely empty nester.

Apparently, several reviewers were put-off by Gandhis ruse and to be honest, there are anumber of cringe-inducing moments. However, by the end of the documentary agenuine transformation has taken place, one that neither Gandhi, the people who

flocked to him nor the viewer could ever have anticipated. Whether that transformationis of a spiritual, social or psychological nature will be up to the viewer to decide. Very

intriguing and highly recommended. You can stream it for free on Netflix and its alsoavailable on Amazon and iTunes.

flaunting designer handbags and shoes was effective at deterring other women from

    poaching a relationship partner.

If nothing else, this gives new meaning to the phrase, its a jungle out there.
