Can be traced back to 1760 BCSpanish enslaved Native Americans through their

policy of encomiendaSpanish failed to bring Africans to America and the

white revolutionaries saw the opportunity to make Africans work for them

African slaves brought to America by Dutch in 1619Whites bought and owned slaves

Rules of the slaves Slaves could not gather in groups of 4 or more Slaves caught escaping would be beaten or have their limbs

cut off Slaves could not own weapons Slaves could not learn to read or write Slaves could not leave their owner’s property

This was to ensure the slaves would not escape and think of freedom

Brown v. Board of Education Blacks were unhappy about over populated school premises

and unsuitable conditions in their school Judge ordered segregation to be phased out over time

Desegregating Little Rock 9 Black students were sent to Little Rock Central High

School One of Nine black students turned up because she did not

receive a phone call about the dangers of attending school She was harassed and was brought into a police car for her

protection The nine black students had to be escorted by federal

troops but still were harassed and attacked

A woman named Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger

Parks was arrested, tried, and convicted for disorderly conduct and violating a local ordinance

African-Americans demanded a more humane bus transportation system

Pushed for desegregation and boycott lasted 381 daysReduced bus revenue to up to 80% which led to the

desegregation in buses

A Southern Belle is a a young woman of the American Old South's upper class.

A Southern Gentleman is a man who is polite and is someone worth respecting

Atticus – He is polite and is respected, and even decided to defend a black in court

Bob Ewell – He is ruthless as he raped his own daughter and accused someone else of doing so

Born on April 28, 1926 in Monroeville, AlabamaPursued a law degree at the University of

Alabama from 1945 to 1949Studied for a summer in Oxford, England, before

moving to New York City, where she worked as a reservation clerk

Continued as a reservation clerk until 1958, when she devoted herself to writing

Published To Kill a Mocking Bird on July 11, 1960TKMB was the only book Lee publishedWon the 1961 Pulitzer Prize for fictionAwarded Presidential Medal of Freedom of the United

States for her contribution to literature in 2007
