challenges and social adjustment are a few of the topics that will be addressed in thissession. A campus tour of UIC’s facilities will be offered.

This opening session will provide conference participants with an overview of significantefforts under to impact the success of African American males in higher education. Areas
of interest include: Recruitment, retention, academic support, transition issues, junior
college to four year concerns, and success stories.
12:00p.m. – 1:30p.m. Hot Topic Luncheons/LearninsThese breakouts encourage dialogue in focused workgroups about topics of interests.
Facilitated presentations/discussions important to students/faculty and staff will be held in
a “working” lunch setting. Topics: Recruitment, retention, academic support, transitionissues, junior college to four year concerns
1:45p.m. – 2:45p.m. Concurrent Workshop Sessions I
1…The African American Male Task Force Illinois Senate Bill 776 in 2007, created a task force in the Illinois Department of Human
Services to develop and evaluate strategies to improve the lives of African American men
state wide. The task force seeks to address key issues impacting African American males
(high school and postsecondary education, economic earnings, child welfare, life
expectancy, quality of life and disparities in healthcare) The task force will guide state programs and initiatives aimed at improving the lives of African American males.
2…“Just one of the Boys?” In the Locker room and successful Women make up a large percentage of those serving African American male students at
many institutions. What are the issues in this cross-gender interaction that aid and hinder success? This session will examine both a student affairs and academic affairs perspective.
3…Leadership and Character Defined This session examines the value of on-campus housing for African American male
students. It highlights efforts to recruit African American males into the housing programas well as promote leadership opportunities for male residents. This session examines and
the value of engagement for African American males students
4…Grad School or Workforce? Today’s seniors face an economic reality that forces soon to be graduates to choose to
pursue a graduate degree or enter the workforce. This panel highlights the steps necessary
to make this choice. A process to evaluate graduate schools and job opportunities will bediscussed.
3:00p.m. - 3:45p.m. Concurrent Workshop Sessions II
1…Associates and Beyond Junior colleges students represent a growing part of the college community. Today’suniversities must confront issues impacting the recruitment and retention of these students.
Transfer students confront a variety of issues while they matriculate. This session will
highlight junior colleges efforts to support their students in their transition to the four year institution. It will also highlight four year institutions support for these students.
2…Harry Houdini the Brother on our Predominately White Institution This “hearing” allows African American males the chance to speak candidly about their
experiences on campus(es). Audience members will be able to exchange ideas with panelists and reflect upon the panelists responses to pertinent issues confronting African
American male students.
3… Is the PhD for me? Increasing the number of African American male doctoral students has become a goal for many research institutions. This panel explores recruitment efforts for African American
male students and the support networks. Panelists will also include doctoral students who

were a part of successful recruitment efforts.
4…My Brother From Another MotherThis session explores the role of student organizations in fostering connections betweenAfrican American students. Black Male Initiatives, fraternities, civic engagement groups
are explored as tools to connect the African American male students with their campus.
4:00p.m. - 4:45p.m. Concurrent Workshop Sessions III
1…Taming the Tiger…The Death of the Black Panther With the achievements of the past 30 years, has civic engagement among African
American males on today’s college campus died. This session generates debates about therole AND value of social justice for African American males in higher education.
2…From the Hoody to Pinstripe…I am Not My Hair African American male image on campus continues to inspire debate of assimilation versus
identity. This seminar explores the unique identity of African American male style and its
impact on connection to the college campus and transition to the workforce.
3…Not just Hip Hop Hype African American men have played a great part in the advancement of the humanities and
arts. Has that role diminished? What is the diversity of African American male engagement
in the humanities and arts? This session explores the new role that today’s universities playin the development and advancement of African American males in the humanities and
arts.
