Division 3 & Thirds-Red Grand Finals... Last weekend was one of my most enjoyable weekends of Southern football in years, for the reason that the majority of games were such close, enthralling contests.

In Division 3, both Mount Waverley and Moorabbin came to play and an exciting battle occurred for the majority of the afternoon. Congratulations to Mount Waverley on making the Grand Final and what an exciting Grand Final it will be against Black Rock. Last time these two senior teams met in a Grand Final was in 2007 and the match went to extra time with Black Rock eventually winning by one point. On behalf of the SFNL we wish both teams all the best!

Division 3 has seen a fresh look in 2015 with some new clubs making finals across all competitions.

Here is my prediction for how the Grand Finals might go:

Division 3 Senior – Mount Waverley by 1 point

Division 3 Reserve – Endeavour Hills by 17 points

Thirds-Red – Skye by 31 points

For Mount Waverley this is the club’s ninth consecutive Division 3 Senior Finals Series and the question we are all waiting to see, is this year the premiership year? Black Rock has done exceptionally well rebuilding over the last few years

on and off the field. A wonderful effort by both clubs to make the big dance and we look forward to a great day of local football.

Onto the Prelims... For Division 1, 2, Under 19s and Thirds-Blue they now move to Preliminary Finals and some clubs from the weekend were very pleased to advance straight into the Grand Finals.

In other fantastic matches we saw Dingley win a close encounter against East Brighton in Division 1 to advance straight to the Grand Final. East Brighton will now face Mordialloc, who continued to impress winning over East Malvern, after finishing fifth in their first year in Division 1. Well done to Mordialloc who were promoted from Division 2 after winning the premiership last year. Both of these were fantastic matches which kept us all intrigued right to the final siren.

In Division 2, Oakleigh District progressed straight to the Grand Final after beating a persistent Murrumbeena and they will meet Caulfield this week after they caused an upset of the season in defeating Keysborough.

In the Under 19s, St Kilda City is the clear favourite and awaits their opponent in Dingley or Hampton in the Grand Final.

Very best wishes to all teams this weekend!!

PLAYERS OF THE ROUND

THE BLK PLAYER OF THE ROUND WILL RECEIVE A BLK PACK.

Calhan McQueen Dingley Football Club The Dream was the dominant force on the ground and singlehandedly won the game off his own boot. He kicked five goals in the last quarter and a half – he finished with six for the match – and looked dangerous all day. Quick on the lead, a lovely kick for goal and

possessing a great pair of hands, McQueen is another potent weapon in the Dingoes’ attacking arsenal and will be a key to his side’s premiership hopes.

Congratulation Calhan.

Dylan Beattie Caulfield Football Club A classy onballer, Beattie looked simply a cut above the rest on Sunday. He accrued a mountain of possessions and every single one of them was of the highest quality. His precision by foot was outstanding, and his pace allowed him to break away from the contests

and leave opponents in his wake. He also impacted the scoreboard with five goals as the Bears ran Keysborough off their legs to advance to the Preliminary Final.

Congratulations Dylan.

DIVISION 1: FRONT & CENTRE / WILL HUNTERDingley are the first team through to the Division 1 decider after a 16-point come-from-behind victory over East Brighton in Saturday’s Second Semi Final.

It was tough, hard, physical and congested for most of the day, which played into East Brighton’s hands. In fact the game was played predominantly on the Vampires’ terms in the first half, before the Dingoes managed to wrestle back control of the match in the last half hour and surge ahead on the back of five second-half goals from Calhan McQueen.

The Vampires drew first blood with a goal two minutes in, but the two sides traded majors for the majority of the opening term. A late goal to Vampire Steve Murphy ensured his side led by 9 points at the first change.

This advantage was swiftly extended to 20 points with two goals inside the first five minutes of the second term, and try as they might the Dingoes simply couldn’t bridge the gap.

Consecutive goals either side of the long break to Toby Mahoney gave the Vampires back a three-goal advantage before they went into lockdown. More than 12 goalless minutes elapsed before a major to McQueen broke the drought and completely changed the dynamic of the match.

The Dingoes were then able to win more ball on the outside, took the game on and simply left the Vampires in their wake with their run and spread.

In the end they stormed home, booting six of the last seven goals of the match to run over the top of the Vampires and into the Grand Final.

McQueen was certainly the difference between the two sides, and simply unstoppable up forward for the Dingoes with six goals. His hands was terrific, clunking plenty of marks inside 50 (including two contested marks in the goal square in the dying minutes which iced the game), and had it not been for a couple of wayward early shots on goal, he could have ended up with eight or nine goals.

He and Marcus Freeman combined for nine of their sides 10 majors.

Tom Wright was also terrific in blanketing East Brighton’s dangerous spearhead Phil Smith, restricting him to just one goal for the day, while ruckman Stu Cleeve, onballers Jackson Peet and Luke Bartholomew and skipper Tony Lavars were also prominent.

Murphy was a prolific ball-winner and a clear standout for the Vampires, while they also had solid contributions from Ben Douthie, Tom Backman and Hamish Dahl.

Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of the victory from Dingley’s perspective was that they stood up when their backs were against the wall. The Vampires dictated the play for the first two and a half quarters, and not only did the Dingoes absorb their pressure – something they succumbed to in both of last year’s finals against East Brighton – but they were able to rise above it and get the game back on their terms. This will go some way to exorcising the demons of 2014.

For East Brighton they must regroup before they get another shot at a Grand Final berth next Sunday.

On Sunday Mordialloc overcame a lacklustre start to stun East Malvern and advance to the Preliminary Final.

The Bloods certainly did it the hard way, kicking a wayward 8.20 in their narrow nine-point victory. This was a match that should have been decided by a much greater margin, given they registered 14 more scoring shots than their opponent.

Granted, the game was played in blustery conditions, however, that was not the overriding factor behind their woeful inaccuracy. Rather, some missed shots early on in the piece eroded the side’s confidence in front of goal, and when the pressure mounted later on in the contest, it simply became endemic.

Thankfully for their sake, they didn’t pay the ultimate price.

Despite kicking with a strong breeze in the opening term, Mordialloc were slow out of the blocks and comprehensively outplayed by a red-hot East Malvern outfit. The Panthers nailed the first four goals of the match and raced to a handy early buffer before the Bloods even knew what hit them.

They showed a bit more fight in the second, the Bloods, applying more pressure around the contest and turning the game into an arm wrestle. In doing so, the Panthers were restricted to just two goals with the wind, but were still 16-point leaders at the half.

But it seemed the men in red and white weren’t done and came out all guns blazing in the second half. Their third term in particular showcased the best of the Bloods as they got on top around the contests and found their outside run.

They made the Panthers look tired as Joel Waters and James Keighley starred around the wings and forward flanks with several telling touches. But as dominant as Mordialloc were, they booted a wasteful 4.10 for the term and blew a golden opportunity to put the Panthers away.

As expected the final stanza was tight as the Bloods held on grimly to their slender lead. The Panthers always looked a chance to nab two quick goals with the breeze and pinch the win, however, Mordialloc were resolute until the final siren.

Waters and Keighley were the catalysts for the win, providing the spark that jolted Mordialloc back to life in the second half. Daniel Quinn and Shane Van Velsen were both outstanding in the ruck – Van Velsen also booted a crucial goal in the third term – while Josh Jewell was also tremendous in defence for the winners.

Paul De Koeyer, Ralph Sadler and Andrew Johnson were all prominent for East Malvern, but Matt Terech, who rucked tirelessly all day – a herculean effort on the vast expanses of Springvale Reserve – was again by far their best

While that’s the end of the road for the East Malvern, a date with East Brighton looms next Sunday in what will be the penultimate match of the Division 1 season.

Preliminary Final – Sunday 13th September

East Brighton vs Mordialloc (Springvale Reserve) The stage is set for a massive clash between the Vampires and the Bloods with the winner to advance to the Division 1 Grand Final next Sunday.

East Brighton were comfortable winners in both meetings between the two sides this season. The most recent encounter was a crushing 51-point crushing in the final round of the home and away season three weeks ago.

But since that loss Mordialloc have pulled off two tremendous finals wins and are giving themselves the best chance possible for a fairy-tale finish to the year.

We will again see two teams looking to play two contrasting brands of football. The Bloods are not an overly tall, nor solidly-built side, so they prefer to win the ball on the outside and run. This is where they play their best footy, as we saw during the third term last week.

The vast open space at Springvale is certainly conducive to that style of play, and the similarities between this venue and their home ground have been well documented in this column.

East Brighton, meanwhile, will look to lock the ball up and create stoppages at every opportunity. This will nullify the Bloods’ runners, as it did Dingley’s for most of last Saturday.

The Vampires have got some quality players running through their midfield, however, several had their colours lowered on Saturday. Damien Rayson in particular was down on his normal output after missing the win over East Malvern a fortnight ago, so expect a much bigger impact from him on Sunday.

But Mordialloc coach Sam Anstey is the one that looms as the potential match-winner. He may not be a prolific accumulator of possessions, but all of his touches are top quality and he has an ability to impact every single contest. If the Bloods are going to cause an upset here, he will be the man causing the damage.

Mordi are certainly entering this do-or-die battle in terrific form and this should make for a stunning contest. East Brighton, meanwhile, haven’t quite been at their best in the last couple of weeks, but we all know their best is certainly good enough. They are a very good football side, the Vampires, and expect their class to show through and get them over the line in a thriller.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

DIVISION 1: CLUB NOTESMORDIALLOC Our football club’s first season back in division one has been an unmitigated success. Had you offered us both teams in the second week of finals before round one, we’d have snapped your hand off. But in the first weekend of September, here we are. And although we lost the reserves this weekend, the seniors fight on.

It was, sadly, a weekend too far for the seconds. We started well, kicking a goal into the breeze in the first couple of minutes and keeping Cheltenham scoreless until the last couple. Things were still looking good at half time when we led by nine points after an amazing goal by MaraDhana, but that’s when the card house fell to bits. Cheltenham were first to the ball from the opening bounce of the third quarter and kicked five goals to one with what was by then a quite sizable wind advantage, and after the last change we had nothing left in the tank to arrest the slide. Dhana and Sam Turner were our only multiple goalkickers with two each. Alex Houghton, Sam Maguire and Robbie Evans were amongst our best.

This match proved the swansong for our coach, Peter Laspatzis. Pete has been a loyal clubman over many years, and has seen the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune in his years as coach, through relegation and (winning) grand finals alike. As a club we thank him gratefully for his efforts.

The firsts looked headed for a similar fate early on against East Malvern, who in the first term refused to miss, kicking five goals straight against our tally of 1.5 which set the scene for the rest of the game. The second quarter began in the same vein, but in the last ten minutes before half time Mordialloc started to gain a foothold, going into the main break 16 points down but believing they could turn the deficit around. The third term was one that few neutrals saw coming, as Mordialloc exerted a dominance greater than that which they were able to at any stage this season. Our statisticians showed an inside 50 count for the term of 18 to one, and while a return of 4.10 wasn’t ideal we kept East Malvern scoreless to turn three goals to the good. A tight, tense last quarter saw Mordialloc end with a

nine point victory and an appointment with East Brighton next weekend. James Morris was our only multiple goalkicker with two, with Joel Waters, James Keighley and Sean Van Velsen excellent on the day.

Mordialloc thanks all its’ wonderful sponsors for the season. Our major sponsor is Sticky Labels. Sticky Labels is a family-owned company in Braeside that has produced quality labelling products to clients Australia wide for 25 years. Sticky Labels will produce labels that are iconic, perfectly targeted to the customer and competitively priced, whether it be for a small bottling run, or a major run in the supermarkets, or anything in between. So for multi-colour print services that will bring your product to life, feel free to call 9588-0022 or visit www.stickylabels.com.au. Sticky Labels would love to talk to you about your next project.

So, having started the season with five senior teams, one now remains. This Sunday at 2.00, lets all get to Springvale and roar the boys on to another grand final…

DINGLEY Some very nervous times when Mahoney goaled early in the third quarter to extend East Brighton’s lead to 17 points, and more than a few Dingo supporters would have had that “surely not again” feeling. Enter “The Dream”, and less than an hour later, the fairytale reversal was complete. In one of the great matchwinning performances of recent times, Calhan McQueen almost single-handedly stole the match from the Vampires’ grasp to ensure that the Dingley seniors would be joining the also victorious Reserves and Thirds in the big showdown. Not quite so easy for the U19s, who face the seemingly

sisyphean task of turning the tables on a very impressive St Kilda City outfit, provided they can get through this weeks preliminary. Three fantastic wins though, and an extra week to prepare for what should be a very proud day for our football club.

For quite a few of us, it was a time of subdued emotions, as the fabric of the day had been shattered by the early morning loss of one of our very best friends. Condolences to the family of the fabulous Phil Buckley, and to his many, many friends at both the Dingley and Heatherton football clubs.

Sponsors Carlisle Homes, Bendigo Bank, Tranzworks, Dingley International, The Den Men, Dingley Sports Club, Buxton Real Estate, Craig Allen & Associates, Monier Safety, Star Ceilings, Braeside Pest Control, Goulding General Engineering, Eagle Printing, Dolphin Products, Ram Locksmiths, Storage King Braeside, Patterson Cheney Toyota, Hinkler Motors, Highway Tyres, Unique Star Mechanical Repairs, Dingley Conveyancing, Din San Nursery, Altitude Volvo, Back in Motion, Adriano’s Pizza, Axis of Epic, The Natural Source, Hannafords, Control Bin Hire, 13 Cabs.

EAST BRIGHTON It’s a long road to the top with many falling along the way. All concentration will be on the game at hand against Mordialloc this week out at Springvale. It is fair to say the Vampires did not put their most efficient foot forward last week yet were still in the hunt with 10 minutes left. Credit to Dingley they played for

4 quarters and were worthy winners on the day but as we have said the best thing about last week is that we have another week. Another chance to rectify errors and muster our best effort against a relentless Mordialloc this week. Credit to the Bloods. They have done a mighty job and should be well pleased with their season. They present

a worthy opponent and deserve to be where they are. East Brighton will have their work cut out to get over the line this week.

Presentation Night Thursday October 1st at the McKinnon Hotel $80.00 per ticket. Visit the website www.thevampires.org for bookings.

Semi Final action was upon us at the Southern Football Netball League and it brought about some interesting results heading into the Preliminary Final.

Oakleigh District comfortably accounted for a battle-worn Murrumbeena at Jack Barker Oval last Saturday, booking its spot in the 2015 Grand Final after a 45-point win. The Oaks forward combination of Josh Hill, Khaled Kandakji and Dave Velado were superb in the win, booting 11 goals between them while the Beena had eight individual goal kickers.

Pat Carroll and Mitch Walder were named as the best for their respective clubs in a match that saw Murrumbeena jump out of the blocks, surprising Oakleigh District to take a three-point advantage into the quarter time break.

Oakleigh turned it on in the second term and slowly began to get on top in a hard fought midfield battle. The likes of Walder, Declan Turkington and the returning Tom Cameron did their best to curtail the influence of Oakleigh’s midfielders but the Oaks were slick in their ball movement, resulting in four goals in the quarter, taking the lead and holding an 18-point half time advantage.

The second half comeback was made more tough for Murrumbeena after utility Josh Wright went down with an ankle injury in the second term, one that saw him miss the rest of the contest. The injury seemed to spur Murrumbeena to greater heights and it found itself in control of the play for patches during the third term.

The Beena had their opportunities to cut the margin but missed multiple chances to put intense pressure on the Oaks, who took a 16-point lead into the final change.

Oakleigh Districts found the midas touch in the final quarter, booting six goals to break away from Murrumbeena to turn a tightly-contested game into a comfortable win.

Murrumbeena fought hard defensively all day, but the offensive firepower of Oakleigh proved too much in the end, and the Oaks became the first team to book a spot in the Division 2 Grand Final.

Caulfield has caused possibly the biggest finals upset seen in the entirety of the Southern Football Netball League this season, comfortably accounting for Keysborough to the tune of 40 points.

Full forward Adam Connell and midfielder Dylan Beattie were at their absolute best, booting nine majors between them while Tim Kennedy and Glenn Nye were also impressive out on the park.

Keysborough got solid performances from Daniel Moreland and Will Gayfer, while Gayfer, Moreland, Davor Rajic and Tim Bacic all kicked two goals.

The match looked set to be a shootout early in the opening term as both sides went to work converting their opportunities inside forward 50. It would be the Burra who held the first advantage and went into quarter time with a two-point lead.

Caulfield put the foot down on the accelerator in the second quarter, taking a comprehensive 29-point lead after booting six goals while holding Keysborough to just one to take a confidence-boosting advantage into the main break.

Not to be outdone, Keysborough hit back in the third term, cutting the margin to 10 points after booting four goals, but perhaps

should have taken the lead after several wasted opportunities saw it register eight behinds for the quarter.

Caulfield seemed to have no problems with accuracy as it again raced away in the final term, booting seven goals to put the win out of reach of the highly-fancied Keysborough, and not only causing a massive upset but also knocking out a premiership favourite in straight sets.

The second biggest week of the football year is upon us; Preliminary Final week will decide just who makes it onto football’s biggest stage.

Preliminary Final – Saturday 12th September

Murrumbeena vs Caulfield (Jack Barker Oval) I’ll be the first to admit that I did not envisage these two sides meeting in a match to decide who will play off in a Grand Final. It has been a remarkable year for the Murrumbeena Football Club, which has made believers out of critics including a certain radio team member who shall remain nameless – cough cough Johnny Tak cough cough.

The Beena have relied on a strong defensive presence on the field all season and it has held them in good stead so far. They have the ability to keep the ball in their half of the ground for long periods of time and have an underrated forward line that is capable of sneaking up on opponents.

That forward line is led by Anthony Ekberg-Weiss and Alex Moloney while dangerous swingman Dean Spanos is one player who has the ability to turn the game on its head, whether it be in the midfield or up forward. Despite a disappointing finals series so far, if the Bears aren’t on the lookout for him than they might find themselves packing their bags early.

Caulfield has been a surprise packet itself this finals series, after two strong upset wins against Skye and Keysborough following a tough upset victory over Oakleigh District in order to just make the finals. Adam Connell has been in superb form up forward and will be the focal point of the Bear’s attack.

Glenn Nye has had a solid finals series thus far while the likes of Jake Buggy and Jason Twirdy will look to be dangerous in the clearances and will search for an opportunity to hurt their opponent on the scoreboard, whether it be setting up a goal or sneaking into the forward line to kick one themselves.

This game will be extraordinarily tense but equally as exciting as neither side was expected to end up in this position at the start of the season. Shayne Sheedy and the rest of the Oakleigh District side will be eagerly looking on as these two Cinderella stories go head to head in a battle for the final spot in the Division 2 Grand Final, and a chance to move up to the top flight of football.

It will be hard to pick a winner but a winner I must pick. Although it is hard to separate these two sides I had the pleasure of watching them do battle earlier in the season and both sides showed the ability to control the game on the day. But in the end Murrumbeena was too strong in that contest and I believe it will be the team to beat.

Murrumbeena by 12 points.

DIVISION 2: CLUB NOTESMURRUMBEENA On the Field After their stirring win against Keysborough last week in the Qualification Final, the Seniors ran out against top placed Oakleigh District in the first Semi Final last Saturday. Matt Jones and Jarrod Walker had been replaced by Tom Cameron and Mark Richardson.

The first quarter was very competitive with Beena having much of the play in their half of the ground. We led Oakleigh by several points (22 to 19) at the end of the quarter and would have been further ahead except for some errant kicking. Mitch Walder was doing well in the ruck.

Oakleigh District came back in an aggressive second quarter and our back line was under constant pressure. Dechlan Turkington was prominent repelling attack after attack. District put on 4.5-29 pts to Beena’s 1.2-8 resulting in an 18 point

lead at half time. Beena’s hopes were hampered by the loss of Josh Wright with an ankle injury.

After half time Beena continued to fight against a more settled Oakleigh. Beena players such as Tom (Sauce) Valenta and Darcy Hargrave strived to get the ball and send it forward. In the back line Sam Moloney, Sam Parkes, Ray Pickering and Kane Downing alongside Dechlan T repelled many Oakleigh attacks. At three quarter time Oakleigh led by sixteen points – we had pegged them back by two points but again suffered from too many behinds.

The last quarter was more one-sided as Oakleigh scored a further 6.7-42 to Beena’s 2.2-14. Our lads didn’t stop trying but the lack of sufficient talls told in the end as Oakleigh dominated in the air.

Beena’s 8 goals all came from individuals while the best players included Mitch Walder, Tom Valenta,

Dechlan Turkington, Darcy Hargrave, Tom Cameron and Sam Moloney.

Off The Field CHRISTMAS TREES FOR SALE. The MFNC is having a Christmas Tree drive this year. Trees at great prices can be picked up from the club rooms on 29th November and 6th December. Prices between $60 and $80 dollars. Stands available for $40. More details to come.

Ilya Fridman, Kai Allison and Leigh Dawkins are three of the most distinguished and respected umpires in the Southern Football Netball League, but their proficiency belies their somewhat experience in the caper.

The trio entered the 2015 season with a combined five years of involvement with the umpiring fraternity, yet are still among the League’s top whistle-blowers.

Part of the reason behind the rapid ascension of these three men to the top echelons of SFNL Umpiring is their thorough

understanding of the game through their vast experience as players at different levels.

And their stories are remarkable similar. All three boys speak of their football careers cut short by injury before taking up umpiring as a way to maintain an involvement in the game they love.

Fridman spoke to the SFNL Record in the lead-up to Community Umpiring Round back in May about his playing career with SFNL clubs Bentleigh (then in the VAFA), Dingley and VFL side Casey Scorpions.

After showing plenty of talent as a footballer, he was later crippled by a horrid run of injury and illness, including glandular fever, a dislocated knee, broken patella and lower back/spinal injuries.

A mate of his then suggested he consider taking up umpiring as a way to regain fitness and aid his injury rehabilitation.

Allison, too, showed enough promise during his brief football career to suggest he had what it took to play at a high level.

A tall goal-kicking midfielder/winger with the Gippsland Power in the juniors, Allison looked set to play against their elite TAC Cup Under 18s squad before stress fractures in his lower back and a chronic hip injury, similar to Osteitis Pubis, took over.

Dawkins, a Tassie native, started his career aged seven in the little league and progressed all the way up to senior level with the East Devonport Football Club before living in London for five years.

Although he had the occasional social kick over in the old dart, he yearned to play competitively. He moved back to Melbourne in 2011, and although he wanted to join a local SFNL club, his shoulder had other ideas.

There is little doubt with these three that their success with the whistle can be attributed to their careers as players.

“I think it’s good just to have a bit of a feel for what the players going through. I mean, I’ve been out of the game for a while so I’ve probably lost a little bit of touch with it, but I think just having a good kind of idea of

what it’s like to play at a good level and that I reckon it’s definitely helped,” Allison said.

Dawkins agrees. “I think we (ex-players) have a bit more game-sense about us (compared to umpires who have never played the game competitively), we can sort of read the play a little bit better and understand what (the players are) trying to do and not be so technical on every little free kick because you know how hard a game it is to play,” he said.

Fridman said he remembered the qualities he appreciated in a whistle-blower from his perspective as a player, and has since tried to incorporate those same qualities into his own umpiring. This is part of what make him one of the League’s most respected officiators.

“I really appreciated the umpires that had the time to talk to you as a player on the field when the decision’s been made, umpires that really took that extra step and explained their decision and would be really approachable... and that’s something I try to do with my umpiring,” Fridman explained.

And there are many aspects to umpiring at community level that the boys enjoy, not least of all they get the best seat in the house to greatest game of all.

Allison and Dawkins also love maintaining their affiliation with the sport and see similarities between the umpiring fraternity and their football clubs in terms of culture, building friendships and enjoying social activities off the field.

“It’s a really good way to get involved in the sport. It’s a really good culture down at the SFNL Umpires Association… there’s some really good people down there and we always have a good time training,” Allison said.

“We train Tuesdays and Thursdays, which is similar to a football club, we have social functions and get-togethers and stuff like that as well, similar to football clubs. At the end of the day, we’re all similar in that we’re trying to improve our performances and get better,” Dawkins added.

But Fridman also sees several other benefits that far surpass simply having fun.

“It teaches you a lot of life skills in terms of building your confidence, your ability to communicate… you’re always keeping fit. And then there’s a bit of the monetary side of things as well. You actually get paid to do it!” Fridman said.

Umpiring has quickly developed from a hobby to a passion for Fridman, Allison and Dawkins, and all three boys encourage people of all ages to give it a go.

“If you enjoy football and enjoy being around the game, then I’d definitely recommend former players and even officials, anyone that enjoys the football environment, they should get involved,” Dawkins said

DIVISION 3: MAN ON THE MARK / ANDREW PALOCZI @Apaloczi

Preliminary Final

Mount Waverley vs Moorabbin Moorabbin made the early running in the Preliminary Final, having three goals on the board before Mount Waverley could register a score.

The Mountain Lions were struggling to get momentum and were under pressure in defence, when the Kangaroos conceded a free kick and subsequent 50 metre penalty.

Mount Waverley seized on the release of pressure, kicking its first goal and quickly adding a couple more. When Ian Taylor booted his second goal, 15 minutes into the quarter, the Mountain Lions hit the front. By the time the siren rang out their lead was 14 points, courtesy of their fourth consecutive major. The Kangaroos were anchored on three goals straight.

Moorabbin’s players were advised at the huddle to show accountability and discipline and to focus on the ball, and not risk giving away further 50 metre penalties.

With the first goal of the second quarter, the team in green and gold looked menacing and threatened to break away. However, Moorabbin rallied and when Dayne Schipper wobbled through a Kangaroos’ goal on the half time siren, it cut the Mountain Lions’ advantage to two points.

Mount Waverley managed four goals to two in the third term including an impressive set shot from the boundary line by Taylor.

However, it took plenty of work for the Mountain Lions to gain their three quarter time lead. The Kangaroos edged in front at the eight-minute mark of the third term when Mark Russell nailed a set shot; Mount Waverley had to wait until Taylor’s goal to regain the advantage. By then 16 minutes had elapsed.

The Mountain Lions then added a couple more majors late in the quarter.

Sitting 13-points adrift with a term to go, the Kangaroos needed a big effort but had a bit of a breeze going their way. They threatened a number of times during the final quarter, and the margin mostly hovered around two goals in favour of the Mountain Lions.

The last term became an arm wrestle in which neither team could manage a major until Mount Waverley goaled at the 17-minute mark. This pushed the lead out to three goals and it looked to be enough, but the determined Sean Kelly rose to the occasion for Moorabbin. He took a strong contested mark and made no mistake with his shot for goal.

Entering time on, a Mount Waverley player rushed a behind, reducing his side’s lead to a precarious 11 points.

But the Kangaroos’ scoring had finished for the day and the Mountain Lions made the result look a little more comfortable with a Cameron Kirkup goal on the siren. The 17-point winning margin was fitting. Mount Waverley was the slightly better side.

Lachlan Rose was named the winner’s best ahead of skipper Richard Mathers, whilst Zdenek Hostalek and Sean Kelly were prominent again for the Kangaroos.

The Mountain Lions celebrated a hard-earned victory with an enthusiastic rendition of their unique club song.

They then promptly returned to the field to do some stretching and to start focusing on next week’s Grand Final. Their steely resolve was apparent and it was clear how much they want to sing that song again on Grand Final day. But Black Rock presents another big challenge.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

Grand Final day promises to be a thrilling contest between Black Rock and Mount Waverley.

Black Rock occupied top spot for all but two rounds of the home and away season and deserved its status as minor premier, but Mount Waverley maintained a good ladder position throughout, never too far adrift. The Mountain Lions spent most of the season in the top four and pounced on second spot in Round 18.

Mount Waverley has been unable to defeat the Jets this season, but came close in Round 15. On that day, the Mountain Lions only kicked goals in the second quarter, yet lost by just a point. The Jets took their opportunities with three last quarter goals, whilst the Mountain Lions squandered theirs with six behinds in that period.

Previously, the sides met in Round 5 with the Jets handling the challenge of a visit to Mayfield Park, to get home by 10 points and maintain an undefeated record that did not end until a Round 9 loss to Ashwood.

The Jets have based their season on a wide range of contributors, and have adjusted well to the disappointment of losing Tom Dewar to a knee injury that ended his season

after he had played just eight games. Dewar had already booted 39 goals.

Black Rock coach, John Burke notes that players had been challenged in the previous couple of seasons to share the goal-scoring load and have

responded well. Burke explains that they have

managed to score effectively as a team without having another player featuring in the league’s top goal kickers.

The challenge for Mount Waverley

is to bounce back from a comprehensive seven-goal loss when the

sides met in week two of the finals. One thing that the Mountain Lions need to do is contain Adrian Lane. He led the way for Black Rock in a best on ground display in the Semi Final

clash between these teams, and kicked three majors.

Lane was also prominent in the sides’ Round 15 clash, being named the Jets’ second best player and booting one of his team’s five goals.

Burke reflects on how far the Jets have come in the past three years, after battling financial instability and a loss of respect from inside and outside the club.

He explains that three years ago he presented the club with a plan to help it rebuild, and this involved a focus on its culture. More specifically this was about “respect, attitude, commitment and effort”, Burke says.

In this time, he points out that the club has gone from having 25 players in the first round of the 2013 season to having around 90 footballers across three sides.

He is excited that the club will be participating in both the Reserves and Senior Grand Finals.

Burke has vast finals experience from Cheltenham and is confident that the Jets will be well prepared for the challenge against the Mountain Lions.

He will keep everything normal in the lead up to the match, training on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Thursday will feature what has now become a customary dinner, which has helped the team bond.

Burke feels the Jets have a good balance of young and experienced players and says the young players have been a pleasure to coach. But he makes it clear that the senior players and the leadership group drive the club.

Cory Durie, Jay Williams and Kelly Spratt form the leadership group. “Those three boys have got a lot of experience and they are worthy leaders of our football club,” Burke says.

He also praises backman, Andrew Ferguson, who missed out on a spot in Black Rock’s Elimination Final team last year. “He’s been secretary, treasurer, you name it, he does it all, and he’s our media manager.” He makes it clear that if the Jets win the ultimate prize on Saturday, plenty of credit should go to Ferguson.

Burke emphasises that the Jets will respect the opposition and enjoy the day, and that a win will hopefully result from their efforts. He says, “It’s been a three year journey. If we win a premiership at the end of it that’s a bonus, but it’s not the important thing.”

He will be proud of the players, no matter what, and is confident it will be a high quality game.

Mount Waverley playing coach, Jarrod Wilkin has the ability to inspire his team with his courage, and is sure to be crucial in the backline. He has the versatility to contribute around the ground for the Mountain Lions.

Wilkin explains the work that has gone into the Mountain Lions reaching the Grand Final again, after losing a number of players at the end of 2014. “It was looking pretty grim, but

we managed to get mates of mates to come down and build a competitive side. It took us about three or four rounds to gel together,” Wilkin says.

He sees the result of the Grand Final as hinging on

“who can sustain the most pressure”, and

considers this to be an area that the Mountain Lions pride themselves on.

Like Black Rock, Mount Waverley is not overly reliant on

any individual to score its goals.

Big forward, Luke Galle has

booted 68 majors for the season and sits second on the division’s goal

kicking list. He was held goalless in the

Preliminary Final and the Mountain Lions were still able to manage 12 goals for the day.

Wilkin mentions that Galle came to the club from Foster where he was playing at centre half back. This highlights Galle’s ability to contribute in different positions, and he has the fitness to cover plenty of ground.

Another player Wilkin speaks of is Leigh McInnes who he describes as a “strong onballer with silky foot skills”. However, the coach says that it is McInnes’ tackling that really makes him stand out.

The loss of Drew Macrae to injury last time Mount Waverley played Black Rock was a big blow for the Mountain Lions. He is adaptable and can contribute in the ruck and around the ground. But, if Macrae is unable to play in the Grand Final, Ben Beecroft has the experience to do plenty of work in the ruck. He is always competitive and ensures that his side’s midfielders are in with a good chance to win enough of the footy.

Chris Jeffries reads the play well and has the knack of kicking important goals for the Mountain Lions. Chris Filer showed some zip at times in the Preliminary Final and may be dangerous.

Cliff Aikman will be a valuable addition for Mount Waverley if he is able to return to the side, but has been unable to play since an injury sustained in the first week of finals action.

It will be a terrific match from the first bounce and it is unlikely that the winner will be certain until well into the contest. The Jets have had a little edge in consistency throughout the season and showed what they are capable of in a ruthless Semi Final display against Mount Waverley. But the Mountain Lions will be far more competitive this time.

Expect Black Rock to claim a narrow win.

Doyle’s Bridge Hotel > Seniors On to the big game, today see’s us take on old foe Mt Waverley who we have had several tight battles with over a 10 year period, most coming down to the wire & being decided by small margins, this year has been no different. After earning a direct path through to the Grand Final, the Jets will go into today’s contest with very thorough planning & preparation for what I’m sure will be another battle to the final siren, as it was in the 2007 drawn Grand Final thriller... Could we see a repeat of this?

Brighton TOYOTA > Reserves Our boys have had to ‘do it the hard way’ to earn their spot in the big

dance & showed when on song they can play some great team football, as highlighted with last weeks strong performance over Sth Yarra. Today we get our fourth crack at the 2015 D3 reserves benchmark Endeavour Hills, who have proven to be too strong for us in previous encounters. I’m sure Johnno & the boys have learnt from this & have some aces up their sleeve in an attempt to reverse the result, we wish them the best of luck on Grand Final day !

Well it’s here (another bloody Grand Final!)

And what a game to win to get through, Moorabbin jumped out of the blocks with 3 quick goals, but the boys composed themselves and kicked the next 5 to take a 14 point lead at qtr time, Moorabbin were relentless in their pressure closing the gap to 1 point at half time, but credit to the boys they stood strong and kept rising to the occasion with Patty K and Minsos kicking 3 each, Lachy and the Cho best a field controlling the midfield, they ran out winners by 17 points.

The boys have worked hard all year and with the direction and leadership of the coaching staff, the help of the committee and our great supporters, we face Black Rock in the great decider.

They’ve had our measure so far this year, Albeit only just, but still had it.

But we have belief.

We believe in the players & coaching staff we have, if we all perform to our best on the day, we will win.

The defence has worked well all year with the likes of Capt Jazz at CHB taking plenty of marks, Simo playing key position and still providing plenty of rebound, with others such as Seany, CommSec, Lachie & Pearcey all reading the play well and showing plenty of dash and skill. Fiddly showing grunt & pace and Muggers being a tough shutdown defender. Good to have Cossi back there with his poise and leadership.

Taz & Uncle Toby on the wings with their speed, skill & toughness over the ball.

The midfield of Caf with his penetrating kicks, Leigh who is a bull in a china shop, Cliff with his outside run, Beeza with his quality taps and run around the ground & Sunshiiiiine with his good ruck work & outside run.

The maniacal toughness of Patty K & Badger when they are thrown in there as well.

Up forward with Vulture having a brilliant season with 70+ goals, CJ being an excellent secondary/third tall with good goal sense and body work, Micky K, Cammo & Minners with their class & skill, Drewy with his athleticism, Gus with his good positioning.

And let’s not forget El Capitano Big Rich who leads from the front and who is having an exceptional finals series so far.

This is it boys. Carpe Diem.

There are no upsets at this stage of the season, but Hampton’s performance on Sunday has put them into a grand final play-off, and has also allowed the possibility of there being a final without the presence of either Bentleigh, or Dingley. Congratulations are in order for the final three teams: St Kilda City, Dingley and Hampton.

St Kilda entered Saturday’s clash with Dingley in very strong form. The Saints were without spearhead Xavier Pauli, but failed to let this hinder their performance as a number of key players stood up. Therefore the initial battle between Pauli and Talarico failed to come to fruition.

Nevertheless, the first half had plenty of contested play, reinforcing how much was on the line for both sides. The Saints booted the only two goals of the opening term and maintained an 11-point lead. The second quarter saw more desperation from both sides, as only three goals were kicked to see the Saints leading by 19 points at the main break.

Dingley needed to make inroads and started the third quarter in strong fashion, however the Rosellas failed to capitalise on their opportunities and trailed by 23 points at the end of the third term. Unfortunately, Dingley were unable to register a score during the final quarter and St Kilda City ultimately moved into the final with a 49-point win.

Oliver Gabelich was important in the absence of Pauli, slotting three majors with strong support from Daniel Georgiou who kicked two majors to be only the second player on the ground to register multiple goals.

Moreover, the Saints have reached the Grand Final, while fortunately for Dingley, they get another chance in next week’s Preliminary Final against the Hammers.

Meanwhile, Sunday morning’s clash between Bentleigh and Hampton was played in overcast conditions. Inaccurate kicking was the feature of the contest with 11.24 (90) being the final score between the two sides.

Both sides ended the opening half on relatively even terms – with Hampton only leading by five points. The third term was ultimately the difference between the two sides as the Hammers moved ahead by 27 points after kicking four goals to zero. Hampton started the final quarter in a strong manner to ensure a goalless second half for the Demons, and consequently a 42-point win for Hampton.

Next week sees an important clash between Hampton and Dingley as both sides enter the Preliminary Final in contrasting form. The reward for the winner is a date with St Kilda City on September 20 and both teams will need to perform at their best to be in any sort of form to challenge the Saints come Grand Final time.

Preliminary Final – Sunday 13th September

Dingley v Hampton

Prediction: Dingley by 10

Key Players: Michael Lee (Hampton) – He has so far booted nine goals during this finals series and is potentially Hampton’s most important player.

Madison Talarico (Dingley) – The star forward was well held against St Kilda, but with over 100 goals this season, Talarico looms as Dingley’s key to earning a rematch with the Saints in next week’s Grand Final.

Finally, congratulations are in order for the final three teams: St Kilda City, Dingley and Hampton. With two games and two weeks left this season, the season is on the line and the best teams will be on display so stay tuned!

UMPIRE’S CORNER / THE WHITE KNIGHT

This weekend is a make or break occasion for both clubs and umpires as everyone strives to be on the park next week. The White Knight wishes everyone the best of luck over the weekend. Congratulations to those umpires selected for the Div 3 Grand Finals. You will do us proud.

On Wednesday evening, a number of umpires will receive awards in recognition of major SFNL milestones that they achieved during the season. Neville Gardiner and Peter Martin have both reached the 800 game milestone and are the first field umpires to reach this mark in the SFNL and its predecessors. John O’Connor, who retired about twenty years ago, had accumulated 720 matches during a career that included several Div 1 Grand Finals. Goal umpire Keith (Rowdy) Mark is approaching the 1200 game milestone, and his record is likely to remain unchallenged for many years, while Mark Carracher, whose grandsons still play at St Pauls, accumulated 863 matches as a field and goal umpire.

Dan Bomford, who has accumulated six Div 1 Grand Finals so far, in an illustrious career between the sticks, reached the 600 game mark, while David Mandelbaum, who has two Div 1 Grand Finals to his name, reached the 500 game mark. Dave has run many other games in other competitions as well. Other goalies to reach milestones this season include Bill Keilar (400 games), Jim Alwer (300 games, all with his very distinctive trigger fingers signal), Rob Cleary (200 games) and Andrew Gillespie, Tayla Manning, Greg Sterling and Will Robinson (100 games).

Brendan Serle, who was SFLUA Treasurer for four years back in the ‘90s, made a comeback three years ago and has finally reached the 200 game mark, after running his first match with us more than 20 years ago. Jack Thompson has taken only nine years to reach the 200 game milestone,

despite taking a year off to play for Dingley Thirds. Jack suffered more injuries during his short stint at Dingley than in his entire umpiring career. Mark Hamilton-Smith also reached the 200 game mark. Mark puts in on and off the track, having served a stint as Association Treasurer, and assisting with training each week by leading the core exercise sessions.

A number of field umpires reached the 100 game milestone during the season, including Alan Glenton, Steve Jasiak, Luke Porter, Scott Learmonth, Ross McNeill and Annie Mirabile, while boundary umpires Lachlan Harris and Fraser Somerville also reached the 100 game milestone.

On Wednesday, all appointments for Umpires being selected to umpire next weekend will be announced at the Grand Final Appointments Night, which is being held at the Huntingdale Golf Club, Windsor Ave, South Oakleigh.

Life Members of the Association who wish to attend the Appointments Night can do so at the discounted rate of $20 per head. They will need to email Peter Martin on [email protected] if they wish to attend.

The Annual General Meeting will be held at Bricker Reserve at 7pm on Wednesday September 23. The agenda and proxy forms will be available shortly at www.sflumpires.com. If you can’t attend, please fill in a proxy form at training and pass it on to a committee member. Please consider nominating for a place on the committee. As well as helping your colleagues, it is a great way to learn how the Association, and the SFNL itself, function.
