Black Stallion is a new dual-purpose forage and grain cowpea variety for the Australian market. Scientific Name Vigna unguiculata Plant Characteristics Legume – offers the benefit of nitrogen fixation. Dual purpose product – provides exceptional forage and high grain yields (suitable for export). Later flowering with a longer production season, giving much more feed. Excellent seedling vigour, fast establishment and speed to first grazing. Multi-grazing ability - has a fast ‘bounce back’ following each grazing. Aggressive growth habit making it an ideal companion crop with forage sorghum or millet. Stem/Phytophthora Root Rot tolerant. High yielding – dense, dark green canopy that produces high quality, protein rich, extremely palatable feed. Produces good quality silage. Is an excellent seed producer and protein levels of the grain can easily range from 22-24%. Tolerance to drought, heat and moisture stress. Ideal legume option for crop rotations. Low bloat risk. Area of Adaption Suited to a wide range of tropical, sub-tropical and temperate growing regions of Australia. Maturity Black Stallion is a later maturing variety. Soil Type Black Stallion is well suited to a wide range of soils types from heavy alluvial soils right through to lighter sandy soils. Management Tips Better regrowth is achieved if grazing is delayed until flowering. Remove stock as soon as leafy portions are eaten. If the crop is not grazed too hard, and the stems and basic plant skeletons are left intact, there should be maximum recovery and regrowth. Will not recover if cut below 15cm. Sowing Black Stallion should be planted at 10-30 kg/ha. Use heavier seeding rates for irrigation and where weed populations are expected to be high. For a companion crop, rate should be 50-60% of the recommended rate for the individual variety. Dual Purpose Cowpea Black Stallion A 7
