passionate in ensuring this innovative production will also be seen in China.
Our next production, Clinton: The Musical is shameless. Two young Australian brothers have written a delightfully wicked musical about President Clinton and Hillary. This musical wowed Edinburgh Fringe Festival and off-Broadway, and we are presenting the Australian premiere! Just come and have a great time watching the people we love to hate and hate to love.
Tartuffe is our final main-stage production. Justin Fleming has set Moliere’s classic in today’s Australia, and in this uproarious comedy, he skewers hypocrisy. It’s a laugh a minute with a great cast of dynamic comedians including Darren Gilshenan, Steve Turner and Alison van Reeken.
Finally to our burgeoning Black Swan Lab where we will present three new Western Australian plays all written
by members of Black Swan’s Emerging Writers Group. First up is Loaded, a double bill that launches our new initiative, The Bridging Company, a company of actors who graduated from WAAPA in 2015, and are making their Black Swan debut in The Lab. Later in the year, you can be treated to a theatrical adventure, A Perfect Specimen, by rising star Nathaniel Moncrieff. So venture into the brochure to discover more about the exploits in our Black Swan Lab and discover the fine work our associates Stuart Halusz and Jeffrey Jay Fowler will offer up next.
The Heath Ledger Theatre builds on artistic pathways that are years in the making. The Studio Underground gives us glimpses of future possibilities. The brochure reveals the hidden places and secret spaces where we make our work. I hope you will join us on these journeys.
KATE CHERRY Artistic Director
A MESSAGE FROM THE
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Black Swan grew to become Western Australia’s state theatre company.
Thanks to Founding Chair, Janet Holmes à Court AC, our two most recent Chairs, Sam Walsh AO and Mark Barnaba AM, and two General Managers, Shane Colquhoun and Natalie Jenkins, Black Swan has come of age in the magnificent State Theatre Centre of WA. Thanks to the sheer tenacious creativity of our artists we have continued to grow in ambition and theatricality, and thanks to our wonderful audiences we have flourished.
The inspiration for the establishment of Black Swan Theatre Company was Andrew Ross’ visionary production of Bran Nue Dae by Jimmy Chi. The theatrical genius and sheer pioneering audacity of that work was recognised by Will Queckett, Duncan Ord and Janet Holmes à Court. They came together with Ross to form a company that would support such visionary Western Australian work.
Now, 25 years later, the flame of theatrical possibilities still sparkles. In 2016, we will deliver three world premieres, five new Australian plays, three WA premieres, two co-productions, a French classic, a modern German classic, a glittering multi-award winning American play and three Malcolm Robertson award winning plays.
Our first production on the main stage has Matthew Lutton, one of Perth’s favourite sons, coming home to make his directorial debut on the Heath Ledger stage as the newly appointed Artistic Director of Malthouse Theatre. Lutton will bring his unique brand of storytelling to the much-loved Australian story, Picnic at Hanging Rock, in a co-production with Malthouse.
Second on the main stage is the brilliant Angels in America, receiving its first professional production in Western Australia. Picture America in the 80s: culture wars, AIDS, turmoil everywhere, just the moment for a very sick New Yorker to get a visit from an angel in his rent- control apartment. This play is clever, witty and transformative.
Taking us down a brand new pathway, our third main stage production is The Caucasian Chalk Circle by the brilliant German dramatist, Bertolt Brecht. Dr Wang Xiaoying, renowned director from the National Theatre of China, will combine forces with Chinese and Australian designers to lead an all Australian cast in delivering this epic tale - exploring the synergies of both indigenous Chinese and Australian culture combined with storytelling and songs sung in Noongar. This project has been three years in the making and Natalie Jenkins, the Board and I have been
Artists lit the spark that became Black Swan State Theatre Company, creating a force that the entrepreneurial spirit of
Western Australia embraced and celebrated.

Welcome to the 25th anniversary year of Black Swan State Theatre Company. A year where we will celebrate the past and all that we have achieved
since our beginnings in 1991, and fix our eyes firmly on the future, on the exciting season that lies ahead.
government partners, the Department of Culture and the Arts and the Australia Council for the Arts. Their ongoing provision toward our core operations ensures that we can take a long range view on the company’s aspirations and remain a sustainable organisation.
To assist us on our journey, Black Swan is very fortunate to have a number of dedicated business partners, government partners, and donors that also appreciate our vision for world-class theatre in WA. A number of these supporters have been with us for many years and I would like to especially thank our Founding Patron and Chair, Janet Holmes à Court AC, for both her vision in establishing Black Swan those 25 years ago and her continued and unparalleled contribution to the company on multiple levels. I would also like to acknowledge immediate past Chair Sam Walsh AO, for his significant contribution to Black Swan becoming a state theatre company and moving into the State Theatre Centre of WA, as well as his continued patronage of the company. I am humbled by the longevity of the support of these two former chairs in particular, and
all previous board members, who are firmly ensconced in the Black Swan family!
To the many artists who have worked with Black Swan since 1991, those in 2016 and in the future – we simply could not do what we do without your passion, talent and creativity, which inspires all of us day in, day out. It is why we exist. In this, I also include our artistic collaborators and our dedicated
staff, who work hard to support our artists to produce the best
possible art.
Most importantly, our audience; you are what
enables us to produce world-class theatre
year after year. Thank you for
supporting us all these years. You have truly
cemented us in the artistic
landscape of Australia and we are
grateful that you have travelled this journey
with us.
In 2016 we lay ourselves bare, revealing the hidden spaces
in the theatre and exploring the hidden within ourselves. To quote William Shakespeare – “The play’s the thing wherein I'll catch the conscience of the king” (Hamlet). We hope you share with us the stories that reveal and celebrate our humanity.
MARK BARNABA AM Chair
In our 25th year, it is my great pleasure to say that the company
shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, quite the opposite is true, as we stand on the precipice of our biggest year yet, both creatively and critically.
In reaching this significant milestone, it is important for me to acknowledge the many people that have contributed to Black Swan becoming WA’s premier theatre company. It is an entire theatre community that comprises the soul of Black Swan - from our Board, to our administration and leadership team, all of the wonderful artists that have worked with us across the past 25 years, to our business partners, donors and audience. This is the reason we’ve been so successful throughout our history and it is why we will continue to be successful going forward.
I want to take a moment to thank Rio Tinto for their support as our Principal Partner – a partner that has been with us for 18 of those 25 years – an outstanding contribution to the artistic vibrancy of Western Australia. Their contribution to the company, since the early days in support of touring to the Pilbara, to important new initiatives such as the Rio Tinto Black Swan Commissions and Rio Tinto $20 Tickets, demonstrate the value they place on arts and culture in our state. Their partnership, with the guidance of Artistic Director Kate Cherry, has allowed us to create pathways for writers to continue to grow and develop, along with our audience, ensuring the creative future of WA is a bright one.
A special mention must also be made of our state and federal

The rock is a nightmare, and
nightmares belong in the past
A new play
by TOM WRIGHTadapted from JOAN LINDSAY’S novel
Australia, 1900. An ancient land becomes the site of an impossible
mystery. A group of schoolgirls and their teachers venture out into the sun-drenched landscape, only for four of their number to disappear forever.
The subsequent investigation creates more questions than answers. One of the girls is found with no memory of what happened to her or her classmates, another succumbs to hysteria for no apparent reason. Those close to the missing girls begin to meet with unfortunate ends and it becomes clear that this is no ordinary disappearance.
Matthew Lutton, award-winning director and former Associate Director of Black Swan, returns to the company in its 25th year to direct this seminal Australian story, a thrilling new co-production with Malthouse Theatre.

The Caucasian Chalk Circle (based on an old Chinese fable The Circle of
Chalk) is Black Swan’s first international collaboration. The play famously begins with a village debate about land ownership, which shifts to reveal a story about justice – following the peasant girl Grusha, who rescues the Governor’s infant son as she flees across a war-torn country in search of safety.
Set against the backdrop of a tumultuous civil war, The Caucasian Chalk Circle is an engaging parable about motherhood, ownership and identity.
Directed by Dr Wang Xiaoying, with artists from the celebrated National Theatre of China, this play promises to be a hallmark production; a unique marriage of Chinese and Indigenous Australian cultures, combined with storytelling and songs sung in Noongar.

Bill Clinton is one of America’s most influential and divisive presidents. On the one hand: educated, charismatic and extremely popular. On the other: reckless, fun and decidedly unprofessional. Clinton: The Musical explores this duality with two actors playing both sides of Clinton as he navigates his tumultuous career, alongside his ever-faithful wife Hillary.
"WJ", the wholesome, intelligent one, and "Billy", the randy, charming one attempt to resolve a range of domestic issues including, yes, "that" infamous incident with a particular bright-eyed, bushy-tailed White House intern...
This engaging and outrageous musical comedy, penned by Australian writing duo and brothers, Paul Hodge and Michael Hodge, will set you up for an unimpeachable night out with zero spin.

Black Swan’s strength lies in artist development, how we encourage access and engage with our community. We have seen enormous
growth in building audiences, building capacity and establishing a benchmark for quality productions of scale in Western Australia. Looking to our future we have three areas of core strategic focus:
artist development, education and regional engagement.
ARTIST DEVELOPMENT
The following programs promote Western Australian talent, create stories significant to the Western Australian community and develop new pathways for artists and audiences alike.
THE BRIDGING COMPANY Our most recent initiative that illustrates the professional pathway for artists coming through the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and onto global stages, is the establishment of The Bridging Company. Consisting of an ensemble of eight graduates from WAAPA’s 2015 acting program, who will make their professional Black Swan debuts in our Lab, bringing to life two new Australian plays.
THE BLACK SWAN LAB The Black Swan Lab is a creative melting pot of emerging and established artists, a wonderful mix of old and new wisdom that empowers artists. In 2016, we expand the Lab to include The Bridging Company. If you have an appetite for new stories and are a theatre lover keen to witness exciting collaborative works, then these Black Swan Lab productions are sure to impress.Supported in part by the Patrons Club
RIO TINTO BLACK SWAN COMMISSIONS This program, supported by our Principal Partner Rio Tinto, enables Black Swan to commission Australia’s leading playwrights to develop new works that engage meaningfully with Western Australians, and reflect our unique position in the world.
Following on from the success of The Red Balloon, adapted by Hilary Bell, there are
four other commissioned works currently in development by Western Australian playwrights. The Bacchae by Jeffrey Jay Fowler, Frankenstein by Zoe Pepper and People Smuggling by Tommy Murphy, all of which will have staged readings early in 2016. Lighthouse Girl by Hellie Turner will also receive further development in 2016, following on from the success of the staged reading in Albany in 2015.
EMERGING ARTISTS A driving force behind our creative agenda is to provide professional pathways for early career directors, designers, writers, composers and actors. Black Swan supports these artists as they establish themselves on the national stage. Artists involved in this program receive mentoring, assessment and the opportunity to hone skills in a professional environment. They are also invited to all productions and have access to our experienced creative teams and resident artists for further training and mentoring.Supported in part by the McCusker Charitable Foundation
RESIDENT ARTISTS This year-long program is for a select group of mid-career artists who are engaged with the company over the course of the year. You might see them on stage or hear their music in a production. Resident artists each have a unique skill set including, choreography, music, design, acting, dramaturgy and fight

choreography. They use their skills to mentor other artists in the company, identify and champion talented artists working outside the company, provide ongoing support to productions throughout the rehearsal process and provide verbal and written peer assessment. They advocate for their artistry and their fellow artists, and are a sounding board for the artistic leaders within the company.Supported in part by the Ian Potter Foundation
EMERGING WRITERS GROUP Emerging playwrights can apply for a year-long position in the company as a member of the Emerging Writers Group. The group meet once a month for discussion and to develop their work. By the end of the year, they will have written a play that receives a reading and is eligible
for the Malcolm Robertson Award.
In 2016, all three writers for our Lab productions are Western Australians who developed their work through the Emerging Writers Group. We present LOADED, a double bill of new Western Australian plays - Gita Bezard’s Girl Shut Your Mouth and Will O’Mahony’s Tonsils + Tweezers. Later in the year, we welcome back another WA playwright from this talented group, in Nathaniel Moncrieff, presenting A Perfect Specimen - the true life story of Julia Pastrana.
2015/16 emerging writers under the guidance of Associate Director Jeffrey Jay Fowler include; Zoe Hollyoak, Izaak Lim, Finn O'Branagain, Zoe Pepper, Mararo Wangai and Mikala Westall.Supported in part by the Malcolm Robertson Foundation
R EGIONAL ENGAGEMENT
As part of our regional engagement strategy, we aim to embed theatre in the lives of all Western Australians regardless of location. Our engagement programs seek to support vitality, pride and strength in regional and remote communities. Black Swan strives to engage with our regional communities in multiple ways throughout the year – through annual live broadcasts from the Heath Ledger Theatre, regional tours and long-term community engagement activities. Underpinning this strategy is the appointment of regional ambassadors, who act as a conduit between the company and their community.
EDUCATION
Black Swan is committed to supporting educators in developing a lifelong love of theatre. We are accessible to all school communities with selected performances, workshops, quality resources and experiences that align with the curriculum. Heavily subsidised student ticket prices and school subscription packages are offered in addition to work experience, internships and high school and tertiary student ambassador programs.

Reflect on some of the significant milestones in our company’s history as we celebrate our 25th Anniversary and look to the future.
25 YEARS STRONG2016 is a significant year for Black Swan, as we celebrate our 25th
anniversary. We recognise the commitment of a multitude of people in launching a theatre company that was strongly regional in character, but
also expressed our place in a national and international theatre world.
Black Swan was established in July 1991 under the Chairmanship of Janet Holmes à Court AC, and founding Artistic Director Andrew Ross. Holmes à Court reflects she was first inspired in creating a new theatre company with Will Queckett and Duncan Ord after seeing Ross’ production of Bran Nue Dae at the 1990 Festival of Perth. In those formative years, Black Swan led the way in promoting Indigenous theatre in Australia, for which it is recognised nationally, working with Aboriginal writers and creatives and producing the work of Jack Davis, Jimmy Chi and Sally Morgan.
Under Ross’ directorship, Black Swan produced a number of critically acclaimed Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian works including: Bran Nue Dae, Sistergirl, Tourmaline, Dead Heart, Corrugation Road, The Merry-Go-Round in the Sea, The Career Highlights of the Mamu, Plainsong, The Year of Living Dangerously and Cloudstreet.
Following Ross’ departure in 2003, Peter Kingston was engaged as Black Swan’s acting Artistic Director, until the appointment of Tom Gutteridge in 2004. The same year, Black Swan was given status as Western Australia’s flagship theatre company. Productions during this time include: Zastrozzi, Ruby’s Last Dollar, Uncle Vanya, The Odyssey, The Crucible, Jandamarra and Last Cab to Darwin. With the emergence of Indigenous theatre companies around Australia, such as Yirra Yaakin, the company has grown and developed and found different pathways, both as a niche company and in presenting works of broad appeal.
In 2008, Kate Cherry joined as Artistic Director, and with Chair Sam Walsh AO, saw the company transition to become Black Swan State Theatre Company. Cherry created the Rio Tinto Black Swan Commissions, a new commissioning program investing
in WA’s creative future and showcasing the work of both leading and emerging Australian playwrights. As a champion for the support and development of Western Australian artists, she initiated a number of development programs for emerging artists, which continue strongly today, with the creation of The Bridging Company.
Black Swan has achieved accolades for bringing truly Australian stories to our stage with The White Divers of Broome, Boundary Street, National Interest and Extinction. The company has become renowned for re-interpretations of classic works such as A Streetcar Named Desire (which broke box office records), Arcadiaand Glengarry Glen Ross. We were honoured to be the first company to produce the trilogy of new works: Rising Water, Signs of Life and Shrine, by international award-winning novelist Tim Winton.
In 2011, Black Swan became a resident company in the State Theatre Centre of WA and in that same year, was the first Australian theatre company to broadcast to the regions a live stage performance, with Cherry’s production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Black Swan’s live broadcasts to regional WA have become an annual event, complementing our regional touring and community engagement programs.
Over our 25 years, we have presented more than 180 productions, undertaken numerous co-productions with local and national companies and travelled the breadth of our state, whilst also touring nationally and internationally!
To our subscribers, stakeholders, business partners, donors and audience members, we thank you all and invite you to continue the journey.
See you at the theatre.
Black Swan gratefully acknowledges all photographers who have documented Black Swan’s productions over our 25 year history and whose work is featured on this page including; Francis Andrijich, Richard Ashford-Hatherly,
