Group Work –Assessments and Assignments
Objective: This activity shows you how to add and customize assignments and assessments in Learn. Both features allow students to submit their work easily online.
Add an Assignment
the Course Content link in the course menu
Assessments, then Assignment.
your assignment (i.e. Reflection 1)
a sentence or two into the instructions text box
100 in the Points Possible text box
Submit
the Student Preview button to see how your assignment looks to a
student.
Student Preview by Exit Preview
Add an Assessment – Create Quiz
the Course Content link in the menu
Assessment, then click Test
Create to create a new assessment
Quiz 1 as the title for your assessment

Add an Assessment – Add Questions Create Question and Multiple Choice
Question 1 as the Title
your own question in the Question Text box
down to the Answers section
an answer in the Answer 1 box
If this is the correct answer, the radio button under
Correct.
Repeat until you have the desired number of responses for your
question
If you don’t have 4 options for answers, click Remove
next to any blank option you want to eliminate (leaving an answer option blank will
result in a blank entry in the quiz).
Submit
Repeat step 2 if you would like to create more questions.
OK when finished. The OK button is light and hard to see. You’ll find it in the
lower right corner.
Add an Assessment – Place into Content Area
Ensure Quiz 1 is selected from your list, then Submit
to the Test Availability section.
For the option Make the Link Available the radio button
for Yes to make the quiz available to students
the check box next to Multiple Attempts, then
the radio button next to Number of Attempts
and “2”
Submit again on the test options screen
Modify Test Questions To add or remove test questions, the arrow icon next to the quiz and Edit
the Test.
NOTE: This is not recommended once students begin taking
your assessment.

and Edit the Test Options.

Complete the Assignment and Assessment of Those in Your Row
Group Work
Complete the assignment and take the quizzes of others in your row by the
My Blackboard tab on the top of the screen and selecting their courses. For the
assignment, submit the Syllabus file you downloaded at the start of the session, or
create a new file in Microsoft Word.
Since multiple attempts have been enabled on the assessment, the quiz twice,
changing at least one answer the second time.
Make sure to return to the class in which you are an instructor to complete the
exercises
Stretch Your Skill (Optional) – Create Multiple Question Types in an Assessment.
Objective: This exercise reveals the array of different types of questions available when building a test/survey in Learn.
Create a New Assessment

Create to create a new assessment
any name you’d like as the title for your assessment
Submit
Create Question and experiment with building different types of
questions.

Inline Grading
Objective: This activity introduces you to the use of Inline Grading, which converts student
homework submissions to a format that can be viewed and graded in Blackboard, without having to
download student papers to your computer.
Using Inline Grading to Grade a Paper
the Grade Center from the Course Menu on the left-hand side
of the screen, and to the column for the assignment you
created.
In the column, an assignment submission. It will have a
needs grading icon . the options menu that appears to the
right of the icon, and on the attempt you wish to grade.
First, create a point annotation. the Point Annotation option:
on any part of the paper to create a
comment. a comment into the box that
appears. Post when finished.
Close to exit the Point Annotation mode.
Next, create a drawn annotation. the Drawing Annotation option:
your mouse to draw on the document.
When done, Save to save your drawing.
Done to exit the Drawing Annotation mode.

To add a grade to the submitted homework, on the
right of the screen, a score into the Attempt
box.
(Optional) To add additional feedback, a
comment into the Feedback – Shown to Learner
textbox. Note that you may also add attachments
and open the full text editor. the Add Notes
link at the bottom to add any grading notes.
Submit to save the grade and your annotations.
Learning Modules
Objective: This activity explains how to create a Learning Module, which act as a focused collection of content that informs students of a particular subject. In addition, you will learn the unique features that are available when using Learning Modules.
Create a Learning Module
Week 1 Learning Module in the course menu
Build Content and Learning Module
Week 1 as the name for the module

right of Enforce Sequential Viewing of the Learning Module,

Stretch Your Skill (optional) – Customizing Style
Objective: This exercise explains the options available to customize the colors and background of a course in Learn.
In the Control Panel, Customization to expand that section, then Teaching
Style
Experiment with changing different settings. Be sure to view changes in Student
View.
Note: Selecting “Buttons” as a style will make the menu inaccessible to users with
disabilities accessing the course with a screen reader.
Note: Some text color and background color combinations will not have sufficient
contrast to be read by individuals who are color blind or have other vision
limitations.

Objective: This exercise explains the different ways images can be added to content areas and within items in Learn.
Add an image (option 1)

Build Content, then Image
the content item you are creating
To see the button for attaching an image, the Show
More button on the far right of the Text box.
the image file you want to add by browsing your
computer, the content collection, or mashups and select your image
an Image Description for those who cannot see the image.

would be “Purdue University mark”. It would not
be “PURDUE in black letters above UNIVERSITY in gold letters separated by a gold
line.”
It’s OK to leave the Image Description blank if an image is purely decorative and
conveys no relevant information. If you’re unsure, provide an Image Description.
When the image file appears in the Text Editor window, Submit
Your image should now appear in Course Content
