All Welcome!
Dear Parents and Carers,
Term 4 -
NEWSLETTER
Welcome back! Term 4 is very busy so please check the upcoming events and important dates in the newsletters and on the website. The website is being updated so check the gallery for photos of recent events: Kinder excursion to Manly, Stage 3 to Canberra and the snow, a parent workshop on Mathematics, Blacktown Festival of Performing Arts, Stage 1 Maths afternoon with parents, Athletics Carnival, Open Day and Fund raising for the farmers. Let us know if there is some information you think should be on the website. In the first few weeks we are busy assessing the growth in the students’ writing, and comparing the growth of students in all key learning areas as well as analysing our NAPLAN results.
NAPLAN RESULTS CONGRATULATIONS! Student growth is measured from K to Year 3 and from Year 3 to Year 5.
In both measurements, Blacktown West is again EXCELLING! We are seeing this growth on our school based measurements but it is exciting that by National Standards we are excelling. Well done to all the hard working students and to the efforts of staff and parents in supporting the students’ learning.

2019 PREFECTS (2018 Year 5 students for the 2019 prefect team) Students who have not had significant blue slips have submitted their names as a nominee to be a prefect in 2019. These candidates will present a speech to the students in Year 2 to Year 6 and explain why they are the best candidate for the 2019 prefect team of ten student leaders. The prefect team is announced at the 2018 Academic Presentation.
SELECTIVE HIGH SCHOOL APPLICATIONS for 2020 from Yr 5 All applications must be submitted online. The information booklets are available at the front office or can be downloaded from the DoE site. Closing date for applications is 11
th November 2018. No late applications are
accepted.
CODE OF CONDUCT for parents. Under the code of conduct for parents, no parent is to approach another student for any reason. Do not approach another family to sort out your child’s concerns. Any concerns need to be taken to the executive staff to solve. You can easily make an appointment with Mrs Douglass or myself to explain the problem. We will then follow these up and resolve any issues. Please do not approach class teachers at 9:00 a.m. as they have a duty of care to their class and are not free to discuss and solve a problem. You can however, ring and make an appointment with the teacher for a later date convenient to both of you. Parents who raise their voices, use inappropriate language or approach a child other than their own may be issued with an “Inclosed Lands Act” which would prevent you from entering the school grounds.
RETURN & EARN RECYCLING > Fund raising Thank you to the SRC for all their efforts with recycling to help the environment and raise funds at the same time. So far with the recycling project the SRC have raised $182.40 in just a few weeks just since the end of Term 3. Students can bring any washed container with the 10 cent logo and deposit in the special containers to assist the fund raising.

KINDERGARTEN 2019 If you or someone you know has a child who is eligible for Kindergarten in 2019, please ask them to enrol their child as soon as possible. Plans are underway for our Orientation sessions and invitation have been mailed.
KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION Friday 9th, 16th and 23rd November from 9:15 am to 10:30 am. LOCATION: School hall and Kindergarten rooms.
For Kindergarten Orientation, parents are provided with invaluable information about our daily school routines and what to expect in the first year of school. During the morning session, the 2019 Kindergarten students will be supervised by teachers where they will get to meet new friends and play games. EARLY BIRD PROGRAM The bottom hall is open every Wednesday and Friday morning 8:30 am to 9:00am. In this session, students can read to an adult and play Maths games. Mrs Garbutt and Mrs Brierley are there to help out with fun activities.
BUS TRAVEL Busways have asked all parents who have children catching the buses to remind them that they must remember to tap on at the beginning of their trip and tap off again at the end of the trip. This is a condition of using the School Opal Card. Data being gathered shows that not all students are doing this. If students do not tap on and off, services may be cancelled due to the lack of recorded patronage. Please remember it is the parent’s responsibility to maintain/ update any changes of details, this will ensure you will
receive new Opal cards as requested. BIKES and SCOOTERS Bikes and scooters are to be walked on school premises by both students and parents. Bicycles and scooters are permitted. With bikes, parents need to ensure that their child wears the appropriate safety helmet and provides a bike chain to secure the bicycle at the school’s bicycle rack. The school takes no responsibility for the damage or loss of bicycles and scooters on school grounds.
