Meet RJ Russell. RJ moved to the North Side of IndianLake ten years ago with his wife, Stacy, and son Jackson, now 11. Their second son, Jason, now 9, came alonglater. Russell learned of the community about a decadeprior when his parents had been looking for homes. “I grew up a ‘lake rat’ on Lake Shafer,” explainsRussell. So when he and Stacy were ready to move, heknew he wanted to look in the Indian Lake area. Theiragent took them to the house on 7252 Cherokee Drive.“It needed a lot of work,” recalls RJ. “There was no airconditioning, no furnace, there was water in thebasement, and everything in the house dated back to the70’s when ed Thomas’ family lived there.” After walkingthrough the house and cataloging all the work that itneeded, they followed their real estate agent to thebeach. “That was it,” declares Russell. “I said, ‘I don’tcare what it takes.’”

It ended up taking 4 months of late nights and longweekends. “I was teaching and coaching, and it was theheight of the wrestling season.” At first, there was noelectricity or running water, but RJ was extremelymotivated to move his family into their new home atIndian Lake.

Now RJ and Stacy’s boys are living the “lake rat”life. “My boys have it so good,” Russell chuckles. Theyare always at the park or down at the lake or riding withStacy and me in the golf cart around the neighborhood.”He shakes his head with a grin, “It doesn’t get muchbetter than that.”

Most ILIA residents will recall that Russell held a positionon the ILIA board from 2009 - 2014. He wanted to be a

part of the decisionsand improvementsbeing made in thecommunity. During hisservice on the board hewas instrumental in theacquisition andinstallation of the newtennis court andplayground equipment

at the park, designed and constructed the dumpsterenclosure, and helped build the stone parking lot borderat the North Beach. Although RJ remains active in theneighborhood, he had to give up his seat on the boardin 2014 as work demands increased. By then he wasselling real estate part-time in addition to his teaching.

By July 2015, Russell’s success in real estate, and therecent political changes in education, spurred him tomake a career change, going into real estate full-time. Although he admits that the change from highschool math teacher to full-time agent was anadjustment, he asserts, “The great thing is, I still get toteach.” He explains, “I find that many people don’t know the legalities involved in buying or selling a home, or understand market value. I get excited aboutopportunities to educate, and people are eager to learn from someone they trust.”

Russell has helped some Indian Lake home-owners selland buy their residences, so it’s quite possible you’veseen his name on signs around the neighborhood. However, RJ is also easy to spot in person chatting withneighbors on the North Beach, trolling on the lake withhis family, or driving his boys around in the golf cart. So,if you fancy yourself a life-long learner, you may want toflag down Mr. Russell. you could be treated to a lessonon anything from property values to polynomials.

Magnificent Indian Lakeby Marge Crouch

C

One of the things that makes Indian Lake so special is our neighbors. Both old and newhave worked hard to make our community special and improve their properties. As Idrive through our neighborhood, I notice many improvements everywhere I look.

One that recently caught my eye was the home of James & Dana Mills on the southside. They have an abundance of shade and have done a fantastic job of beautifyingtheir yard with shade loving plants like hostas and a variety of other plants.

Another is the home of Joe & Bridgett Dayan on West Drive. Since this is a dead endstreet, many of you may not have seen the new sidewalk, grass and flowers that we allon this end of the lake have been enjoying. This is not to mention the beautiful newdeck and other interesting features on the lake side of the home.

Have you noticed the lovely new front porch at the home of Rob and Kathy Fields atthe 4-way stop? Still getting final touches but looks so inviting. Former owner andlong time board member Russ Koehring, always claimed this to be the highest point inMarion County.

Finally, a shout out to Ed Thomas and his crew for keeping the playground/park andentrance on the south side looking so great. First impressions are what it's all aboutand what a nice impression when entering our community.

Keep up the good work neighbors. I love to see the improvements which means thevalue of our home and property increase also._______________________________
