    The Grant o Arms

    The Acting Vice-Chancellor o Sunway University College,Proessor Jarlath Ronayne spoke o the use o a Coat o

Arms in universities, as a symbol o independent authorityand high prestige, going back to the Middle Ages, whenthe colleges o the ancient universities were granted Arms, usually based on those o their ounders.

Over the past 20 years, SunwayUniversity College has producedstudents with outstanding potential, and well-regarded academiccredentials. In 2004, Sunway Collegewas elevated to the status o aUniversity College.

It is essential or Sunway UniversityCollege to adopt a unique, memorableemblem both as an identier, and asymbol o the authority it holds asan institution o higher learning. Theindependence o the universitiesand their powers to award their owndegrees in all subjects has, historically, been represented by the granting othe Coat o Arms.Sunway University College is the rstand only private university college inthe region that was granted the Coato Arms by the College o Arms inLondon. The Coat o Arms has threeelements, namely the Crest, the Shieldand the Motto. The Arms, which wasdevised by the Richmond Herald o the

College o Arms, containsthree geometric shapes, known as piles, eachcharged with a goldensun. Together, the piles, orm a W and with thethree suns, suggests the

    name Sunway.

The Coat o Arms wasunveiled on September 19,2006 during the Installationo YBhg Tan Sri Dato Seri (Dr)Jerey Cheah as the rst FoundationChancellor o Sunway UniversityCollege by His Royal Highness SultanSharauddin Idris Shah, the Sultan oSelangor.

Proessor Jarlath highlighted the actthat a Coat o Arms was given by theSupreme Authorities o a country asan indication o importance o theinstitution and the authority it holds togrant its own degrees.

The Crest, which is placed on topo the Shield, consists o aMalaysian tiger, grasping atorch, symbolizing learningand teaching at the institution.

The motto or the Coat oArms Fortuna Eruditis Favetderives rom Louis Pasteursamous phrase dans leschamps de lobservation,la chance ne sourit quauxesprits bien prepares, whichtranslates as in the eld o

observation, chance avoursthe well prepared mind. Inother words, serendipitousdiscovery arising out o anunexpected observation isnot a random event; onehas to have a preparedmind in order to recognizethe implications o theobservation.

Handpicked by Proessor Jarlathhimsel, he believed that the UniversityCollege deserves a motto that carriesan implication that the purpose o ahigher education is to prepare mindswell or a ullling and ortunate lie. Itwas decided that the motto should bein Latin, the language o learning andscholarship in medieval times. Thephrase was translated by ProessorThomas N. Mitchell, Provost andProessor o Latin at Trinity College,

    Dublin.

Being granted the Coat o Arms, isindeed a signicant recognition, as itsignies Sunway University Collegeshigh standing in the international arena. It is a distinction granted only to thoseindividuals, amilies or organizationswho are judged by the College o Armsto be worthy o it. Its uniqueness inthe private higher education sector oMalaysia refects Sunway Universitysachievements as a pioneeringinstitution that sets quality andintegrity above all else in the deliveryo its educational programmes said

    Proessor Jarlath.

Sunway University College combinesthe best o long-established traditionswith a rontier spirit o originality andinnovation.
