1. Title: “Critical study of the statement “Brahmi Muhurte Uttishtet Swastho Rakshartham Aayushyah”.

By: Dr. Ashwini A. Nimbal

Asso. Professor and Head Dept. of Kriya Shareera

Introduction:A long life is a cherished wish of every

being since antiquity. Main aim of Ayu is one should achieve Purusharth Chatushtayas in his life span. For this a healthy and disease free life is required. Our ancestors had sufficient time to follow the regimen whatever described in text. Hence they used to live even beyond 100 years. But at present in last few decades developed countries and even

Page 7: B.L.D.E. Association’s AVS Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya ...bldeaavsamv.ac.in/.../06/Finalised-News-july-sept.docx  · Web viewDr. Seeta M. Biradar Asso. Professor and Head Dept. of Roganidan

developing countries are witnessing a growing trend of diseases because of unhealthy lifestyle so people hardly live for 65 years with plenty of diseases right from the 1st decades of life. Morbidity rate has increased considerably; the reason for this may be busy schedule, stress, lack of concentration towards self life, pollution, adaptation of modern techniques etc. By following Dinacharya one can achieve disease free life and also can build disease free society.Ayurveda explains many concepts under Dinacharya which starts with Brahmi Muhurte Uttishtet, a special auspicious time for getting up from the bed which is last part of night i.e time just prior to sunrise for acquiring health and longevity. Regular practice of it will prevent many today’s lifestyle problems as people who get up early are those virtuous ones who privilege of spending time liberally as they do posses more time in hand and can follow all regimens of Dinacharyas and prevent many disorders related to life style. In Ayurveda Acharya Vagbhata highlights this beautiful statement as “Brahme Muhurte Uttishtet Swastho Rakshrtham Aayushayah”.Significant Time of Brahmi Muhurta:

Acc. to Hemadri it is considered as last part of night i.e time just prior to sunrise.

Acc. Sarvanga Sundari commentery, the beginning of the 14thmuhurta of night is to be considered as Braahma-Muhurta. Braahmi-Muhurta begins at dawn; it is the penultimate Muhurta of night. Thus the healthy individual may get up two Muhurtas i.e.96 minutes (=almost 1.5hrs) before sunrise.

Commenting on this Acharya Charaka while explaining the Adhyayanavidhi explained that it is important for a scholar to get up early in the morning and says that one should get up during Upavyusha i.e, when still there is a part of Ratri is left which is nothing but Brahmi Muhurta.

According to yogaratnakar Brahmi Muhurta is 2 hrs before sunrise

Acharya Srikantamurti considers as last 3 hrs (3am-6am) is the period of brahmi muhurta.

Precautions while rising in Brahmi Muhurte:Ashtang Sangrah states that before waking

up in the morning, one should assure proper digestion of food taken in the last night.Contraindications: Unhealthy persons, Children, Pregnant woman, Aged persons.Importance of Brahmi Muhurte Uttishtet:

Every person in this world must have heard the famous saying that, “Early to bed early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise” (Benjamin Franklin). He has also quoted a saying “The early morning has gold in its mouth” This saying is time tested and very much acceptable fact worldly wide.Ayurveda explains many concepts under Dinacharya which starts with the Brahmi Muhurte Uttishtet (special auspicious time for getting up from the bed) for acquiring health and longevity. Brahma means knowledge. Time opt for perceiving knowledge is known as Brahmi Muhurta.“Brahmi Muhurte Uttishtet Swastho Rakshartham Aayushyah”A person who is interested in preserving the health, longevity and to avoid Vyadhi and Alakshmi (poverty) one should get up early in the morning in Brahmi Muhurta. But a person with diseases should sleep for maintaining the Dhatusamyata.According to Sushruta this time is also called as Ámruta vela” (nectar time). Early morning is Vata dominating period Vatadosha is helpful in promoting body movements both internal and external and thus helps in easy evacuation of bowel. Getting up in the Bhramhi Muhurta also helps for excellent performance of Physical activities such as exercises, Yogasanas and even meditation as this time is dominated by Vatadosha and regular practice of these activities scientifically proved effective in the prevention of

disorders as these provides physical and mental relaxation.

The atmosphere is not polluted by the radiations of worldly feelings. Their pure mental rays pervade all over the world and make the time sacred. Thus it becomes congenial and encouraging atmosphere.

There is one more beneficial statement “Aarogyam Bhaskaradischet” which means health is got from the sun, so one should get up early in the morning before sunrise which supports the Brahmi Muhurte Uttishtet. Vitamin E and vitamin D are found in abundant quantity in early morning sun’s ultraviolet rays.

The circadian rhythm has been studied in vast details by biologists and physiologists and probably this period is associated with hormonal changes conductive to blossoming of mind.

Liberation of nascent oxygen which easily mixes with haemoglobin forming oxyhaemoglobin reaches to remote tissues and increases energy levels by restoring elasticity and permeability of the cell membranes.

Nascent oxygen is singlet oxygen is exactly what body needs in order to neutralize toxic acids (gastrointestinal, respiratory and metabolic acids) thus It helps to maintain balance of blood PH.

Heightens concentration by providing nascent oxygen and ionic selenium to the brain, heart and kidneys and also it enhances the memory by removing acidity.

Enhances the absorption of vitamins, minerals, proteins and other important nutrients by keeping the intestinal villi clean and alkaline.

Disadvantages of getting up late in the morning:After six in the morning Kapha dominance is seen.

So people who get up in Kapha Kala tend to be dominated by Tamoguna throughout the day. Mind and body will be inactive owing to the influence of Kaphadosha

Bowel movements tend to be sluggish under the influence of Kapha.

After sunrise people awake and the materialistic mental radiations are emitted through their physical senses, dragging themselves to materialistic discussions.

Foetid smell in mouth, constipation, indigestion, laziness, and many kinds of eye diseases arises just because of getting up late in the morning.

Conclusion Brahmi Muhurta is the setting of the

biSological clock of our life or the body. The difference of opinion exists regarding

Brahmi Muhurta. The interpretation can be made that Brahmi Muhurta starts from 2- Muhurtas (i.e. 96 min / 1.5 hours) before sunrise irrespective of Rutus.

Several changes in physical, chemical and biological atmosphere at around this time, which probably catalyses spiritual blossoming of an individual.

At this time there is positive flow of energy and mental faculties are at their highest. By rising at this time the body can synchronise with the rhythm of Sun. The biological and psychological parameters reveal a lot of new insights in the interrelationship of man and the universe.

2. Title: Yusha /soup recipe

Page 9: B.L.D.E. Association’s AVS Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya ...bldeaavsamv.ac.in/.../06/Finalised-News-july-sept.docx  · Web viewDr. Seeta M. Biradar Asso. Professor and Head Dept. of Roganidan

By: Dr. K A PatilAsst. Professor Dept. of Rasashastra & Bhaishajya kalpana

Introduction:Yush / Soup are one of the preparations

explained in Ayurveda & Mainly soup is sankrit word mentioned in sushrut Samhita. Detail explanation about yusha and its classification, qualities of yush /soup is available in kashyapa samhita khilasthana 4th chapter. Different kinds of soups can be prepared on the bases of adding various other ingredients to it. Basically 25 types of soups are there & Classification made on the bases of taste, doshas and preparation method & panchakarma treatment.

Classification:

All Soups are having two kinds of taste:

1. Astringent & sweet. 2. astringent & sour : 25*2= 50 Based on taste 50 types of soups can be prepared.

2. Doshas are three in number vata, pitta, kapha : 25* 3= 75

3. Preparation method are also three types kruta, akruta akrutaakruta : 25*3= 75

4. Based on Panchakarma treatment paachana, karshana, brumhana : 25*3=75

5. Based on conversion after digestion sheet, ushna, & Mishra : 25*3=75

So, like these soups can be prepared in different types not only for diseased person even for healthy person also as a liquid diet. And many of soups can be prepared with decoction of medicaments in diseased condition to increase digestion & reduces sign & symptoms like temperature, lack of appetite, tastelessness, throat infection and many other symptoms one liquid preparation explained known as Yusha/soup which is prepared by adding such spices they increases not only appetite also do digestion and produces perspiration also. And having qualities like (ruchikarak) enhances food

taste, gives (bala) instant energy, light for digestion, medonashak (fat reduction), produces (swedajanan) perspiration, (deepaka)appetizer (pachak) digestive, good in throat disorders.

Method of preparation: Basic ingredients for soup are Mudga ( green gram) and water. Based on requirement other spices, ghee, oil is also used. Proportion of water to 1part of green gram, 14/15/20 parts of water as requires. First outer skin of green grams should be removed and fried with little amount of ghee and 14 /15/20/ parts of water is to be added according to need and boiled on low flame till green grams become soft. after that the liquid is to be filter the filtrate called as yusha / soup.

Examples : We can prepare vegetable soup by adding vegetable to it, phala (fruits) yush, with Shaak ( vegetables), with other dhaany / kudhanya (grains), or with takramla (butter milk water), kwatha (herbs decoction), with some prakshepak (spices like cumin seeds black pepper ginger garlic etc), Amalaki (Indian gooseberry), like this yush/soup can be prepared. Comparatively Fried green grams soup is lighter than the unfried grains soup. Now a day many of popular soups like corn soup (dhany yush), tomato soup (phalayush), vegetable soup, manchow soup (kand yusha), spinach soup (patrayush), mansa rasa (mutton soup) etc.Properties: Yush is beneficial in suppressing different diseases. And enhances taste perception. Gives satisfaction and provides instant nourishment. acts as appetizer. Improves voice, gives instant strength, helps in proper digestion and metabolism, normalizes vata, by its unctuous and hot nature, pitta by its unctuous and astringent, and kapha by its warm and by proceced with other drugs like it balances equilibrium of tridosha.Discussion : Yush is used in purification therapies of panchakarma treatment in snehan therapy- yush is one among 24 kinds of oleation methods

Page 10: B.L.D.E. Association’s AVS Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya ...bldeaavsamv.ac.in/.../06/Finalised-News-july-sept.docx  · Web viewDr. Seeta M. Biradar Asso. Professor and Head Dept. of Roganidan

described in charak Samhita ex Tilakambalika kulatha yush.

In vaman- in hyperemesis complications snigdha amla lavanayukta yush were advised.

Virechana (medicated enema) – purgative drugs used with for enema.

Medicated enema- yusha with small amount of salt used in udavart roga as medicated enema.

After purification therapy yush is recommended as a liquid diet because during purification therapy the digestion power become weak so increase a digestion capacity of a person who under gone for panchakarma therapy yush is one of the great choice of liquid diet which not only increases digestion power it also gives instant energy, taste in food , degirness of food, satisfaction also.

In jwara(temperature) - yush as a liquid diet which is specially prepared with jwaragna dravya because as per Ayurveda in jwara a main causative factor is agnimandya ( lack of digestion power) so to treat jwara yush is one among the medicaments which not only a diet having jwara nashak qualities also. Example is saptamustika yush .which having seven ingredients- Kulatha(horsegram) Yava (wheet), Kola (ber), Mudga(greengram), Moolak (radish), Shunti (ginger), Dhanyak ( coriander).

In rajayakshma (tuberculosis) a special yusha mentioned named as shadanga yush which not only contains herbs also made by adding ajamaamsa (goat meat) – pippali (piper longam), yava (barley), kulatha (harsegram) shunthi (ginger), daadima (pomogranet), aamalaki (Indian gooseberry) altogether one part and ajamamsa (goat meat) 2 parts water 8 parts to all ingredients boiled on low flame and reduced to ¼ after filtered through cloth. After filtration again boiled with little amount of ghee which not only increases digestion power also nourishes the body and increases muscle and light for digestion even it contains goat meat.

In swasa & kasa (hiccough and cough) – many of yushas were explained which are made with those herbs which are used to treat cough and hiccough along with one more yush/soup given that after making of yush kshar of apamarg were added is known as ksharyush.

If thirst becomes as disease during that time mudga, masoor yushas are beneficial.

In diarrhea mudgayush with sugar or mudgayush with laja and sugar are beneficial.

So like this Yusha is recommended as a liquid diet in all kinds off diseases by preparing with different ingredients which contribute not only as diet also relief the disease.

Conclusion: Ayurveda gives more importance to digestive power of individual. It’s believed that properly digested wholesome food will provide proper nutrition to the body. In present era yush is considered as one of best diet of different dietary recommendations. Yushas are very light in digestion and also enhances digestion power to digest other foods also they are having wide range of beneficial effects very less in use, but now a days the yushas are sold in the name of soups in restaurants as an appetizer, but along with that unwholesome foods are also provided. Therefore it is needed to convey the benefits of yush with wholesome food will provide not only health also helps to reduce complications also.
