BLESSED SACRAMENT CHURCH NEWARK, OHIO Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Protecting God’s Children: This week, you will find in our parish bulletin a summary of the Protecting God’s Children program that has been implemented in the diocese since approximately 2003. This program is used in many Catholic Dioceses in the USA. As a parish, we are audited every year to make sure that we are in compliance with the regulations of the Diocese of Columbus. Every adult who has care and custody of our children must pass a background check and attend the Protecting God’s Children course. I believe we as a Church have made great progress since 2003. However, we must always remain vigilant. If you ever see anything that is concerning to you, I ask that you report it to the appropriate authorities. “Render unto Caesar: Serving the Nation by Living Our Catholic Beliefs in Political Life”: Thanks to a generous benefactor, we are able to distribute a copy of this book by Archbishop Chaput to our parishioners. I had the great privilege of being a seminarian under Archbishop Chaput for two years when I was in Denver. He is currently the Archbishop of Philadelphia. He is a great leader in our Church and his understanding of the relationship between faith and politics, which is nothing less than the relationship of faith and life, is a great resource as we try to navigate these turbulent times. Picture Time! We are in the process of preparing a new photo directory of the parish. You will be hearing from us soon! Our Parish & School Events

Parish PrayerlineThe entire parish is requested to pray:

The Vatican Intentions for the month of September• Father Wilson’s Intention: That more parishioners would

share in the call to stewardship through the generous giving of time, talent, and treasure.

• Pope’s Intention: The treasure of Families: That young people in Africa may have access to education and work in their own countries.

The Mass with Bishop BarronEveryone is invited and encouraged to join Fr. Wilson for a six-week study of the Mass on Thursday evenings starting September 20th, and each consecutive week, at 7:00 p.m. in Shepherd Hall. We will watch a DVD series of six talks given by Bishop Robert Barron, one of the leading Catholic evangelists in our country today. In the words of Bishop Barron: “Christianity is not a philosophy primarily…[Christianity] is a relationship with Jesus…and there is no more intense and privileged way to relate to Jesus than at the Mass.” See you Thursday!

From the Principal’s DeskIt’s been a great start to our school year! Here’s what’s happening in your parish school:The virtues of the Sacred Heart of Jesus: The virtues are the foundation of our school’s behavior and discipline program. Each month, we choose a “focus” virtue and choose our “Crusaders of the Month” based upon their practice of that virtue. This year, in keeping with our parish’s focus on the Sacred Heart of Jesus, our school is focusing each month on one of the virtues associated with the Sacred Heart. In September, our focus virtue is Love. What better place to start? Our 3rd grade class led our virtues assembly and shared the truth that love is not a feeling, which is the message the world sometimes sends. Rather, love is a choice. It is an act of the will that wants what is good for those around us. We’re focusing on making the choice to love on the playground, in our lunchroom, and all throughout our building. If you have Blessed Sacrament students in your life, talk about the virtue of love in your interactions with them and help our school reinforce the value of growing in the virtues. Pray for our school and our families this month that they share the love of Jesus ever more fervently!Fall Mum Sale: September also means one of our school’s biggest fund raisers: The school mum sale. Our students are once again selling festive fall “mumkins” – a beautiful mum in a pumpkin container. If you are interested in supporting our school in this way, contact your favorite BSS student or give us a call at the school office at 740 345-4125.Crusader Social Media: Thanks to those of you who have connected to our school social media sites this month. Following our pages, liking and sharing our posts are a great way to spread the word about our school. Great things are happening in our building, and we want everyone to know about it! Remember, it might be your “share” of a Facebook post that plants the seed for a new family to find Blessed Sacrament School. Help us continuing to share the Gospel by encouraging more and more families to consider your parish school!Facebook: @bsscrusaders Instagram: bsscrusadersTwitter: @bsscrusadersThank you, parishioners, for all of your prayers and support!Josh [email protected]

Adoration of The Holy EucharistOur parish is blessed to have many adorers who are faithful and faith-filled to their hour of Adoration. This devotion brings graces to our entire parish family. We invite you to join this ministry and enrich our community. Adorers are needed for Monday, 4:00-5:00 p.m., 5:00-6:00 p.m., 6:00-7:00 p.m.; and Wednesday, 7:00-8:00 p.m. Call the parish office at 740-345-4290 to schedule an hour or if you have any questions.

Spiritual AdoptionOur parish is participating in a Spiritual Adoption Program until Christmas. We are praying for the unborn, and mothers and fathers of those children. We ask that you pray for all babies, especially those who may be vulnerable to abortion, for parents who are considering abortion and for parents choosing to make an adoption plan. We will conclude our spiritual adoption in December by honoring the birth of our Lord and Savior by donating baby gifts to Heartbeats. Sixth month – “I’m sitting up straight now.” The baby’s oil and sweat glands are functioning; these help regulate body temperature. A white filmy layer covers the baby and protects her delicate skin from the surrounding amniotic fluid and from scratches as she twists and turns. This waxy substance will be quickly absorbed into her skin soon after she is born. She can now respond to sound. Her lungs are fairly well developed and she would stand a good chance of survival if born at this time.

Catholic Foundation Grants

“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.”

Mark 8:34When we truly believe that all we have is a gift from God, then we must be willing to give up some things so that we can share our blessings as God intended. Living a stewardship lifestyle means not only being responsible for our own life, but the lives of others as well.Learn how to support others and your parish by contacting The Catholic Foundation.
