This Weekend at Blessed Sacrament
Sunday of the Word of God Pope Francis has set aside the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time as “a Sunday given over entirely to the Word of God,
so as to appreciate the inexhaustible riches contained in that constant dialogue between the Lord and his people”
(Misericordia et Misera, 7). “May the Sunday of the Word of God help his people to grow in religious and intimate
familiarity with the sacred Scriptures.”

Parish Movie – “Hidden Figures"
Sunday, January 26th at 2:00pm in the Parish Hall
Movie Rating: PG Length: 127 minutes Discussion Leader: Michael Schultz
As the United States raced against Russia to put a man in space, NASA found untapped talent in a group of African-
American female mathematicians that served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in U.S. history. Based on
the unbelievably true-life stories of three of these women, known as "human computers", we follow these women as they
quickly rose the ranks of NASA alongside many of history's greatest minds specifically tasked with calculating the
momentous launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, and guaranteeing his safe return. Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson,
and Katherine Gobels Johnson (West Virginia State graduate) crossed all gender, race, and professional lines while their
brilliance and desire to dream big, beyond anything ever accomplished before by the human race, firmly cemented them
in U.S. history as true American heroes.
Admission is free (good will offerings will be accepted). All are welcome, and encouraged to invite any friends or relatives
that may be interested. Movie snacks will be provided by our Dismas Club. For those wishing to remain after the
movie, Michael Schultz will facilitate any discussion that attendees would like to have.
Coming Events at Blessed Sacrament
As we mark the annual World Day of Prayer for Consecrated Life on the weekend of February 1-2
(Feast of the Presentation of the Lord Jesus in the Temple 40 days after his birth), Blessed Sacrament Parish can express
our gratitude for the women and men in consecrated life who have impacted virtually all of us at some point in our lives.
The parish will focus its observance this year on the groups of lay associates/volunteers/oblates/third orders, etc. that
identify, pray and work along with the vowed members of consecrated life religious orders in a wide variety of ministries
and life situations.
There will be displays and information from several orders, including Benedictine Oblates, Lay Dominicans, Sisters of Saint
Joseph Associates, Sisters of Saint Francis Associates, Maryknoll Lay Missioners, and others. There will be personal
representatives present from some of the groups to answer questions after the Masses. The displays will be in our
Gathering Space to view after Masses and throughout the day on Sunday February 2. If you would like to know a bit more
about how you might share in the charism, inspiration and support of a religious order without entering formal vows,
please feel welcome to stop in. Brochures will have contact details for those who would like to make further inquiries.
Explanatory Mass
Sunday, February 9th at 2:00pm

The Relentless Tenderness of Jesus - A Five-Week Lenten Study
Tuesdays, March 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm
Blessed Sacrament Parish – Conference Room
About the Book
In The Relentless Tenderness of Jesus, Brennan Manning brings you to a deeper understanding of the true nature of God.
Through poignant and unforgettable stories challenging observations, Manning helps you stretch your mind and reject
simplistic explanations of who God really is. With rich insights you’ll see how God can at once be a roaring lion, pacing the
globe and seeking you out, and a tender lamb, there to comfort you in time of need. A unique experience, this book will
forever change the way you think about God (taken from back book cover).
Books will be provided by Blessed Sacrament Parish.
About the Facilitator
Terry Mathias is an associate spiritual director affiliated with the West Virginia Institute of Spirituality.
About the Format
Participants are encouraged to attend all five sessions. In preparation for each session, participants will be asked to read
selected portions contemplatively (the ancient practice of lectio divina).
It begins with reading an inspirational writing then quietly reflecting on it – not for information – but reflection on God’s
movement in you as you contemplate the words. While reading, one pays attention to what moves the heart, stirs the
soul, and captures one’s attention.
You will be invited to engage in spiritual reading and journaling. Then the group comes together to share the fruits of
their prayer and reflection. The process will be explained in the first session.
To Register: Please contact Terry Mathias by phone at 304-741-0045 or by e-mail at [email protected] to register or
to ask any questions.

Faith in Action – Christmas Stocking News
Hello, everyone!
Because of you, 91 of our older neighbors experienced the joy of Christmas. There were 57 volunteers engaged in this
effort, contributing more than 165 hours to the cause. There were seven referring agencies and offices looking out for
their most vulnerable seniors, and every single senior who was referred to the program was accepted. 100% of our Senior
Squirrels on the Salvation Army Angel Tree were adopted, and, more impressively, 100% of the gifts were purchased and
returned by the due date.
We stuffed 95 stockings, each with a handwritten, personalized Christmas card. We distributed 75 scarf/hat/glove sets, and
many of the scarves were handmade with love. We received dozens of rolls of beautiful gift wrap, which we used to wrap
more than 225 presents, labeling each with a personal tag. We made countless trips to the Dollar Store for more paper,
bows, tape, tags, and bags. We coordinated 78 personal volunteer Delivery Elf visits and staff/referring agencies hand
delivered the rest.
Every single one of you played a part. Every single one of you helped make this annual effort a success. Every single one of
you should know how very proud I am of your selflessness, your shared joy, and your willingness to be part of something
so very special.
With love, Jennifer

Mass Readings
January 26, 2020 - Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Reading 1 ISAIAH 8:23—9:3
First the Lord degraded the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali; but in the end he has glorified the seaward road, the
land west of the Jordan, the District of the Gentiles. Anguish has taken wing, dispelled is darkness: for there is no gloom
where but now there was distress. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in
the land of gloom a light has shone. You have brought them abundant joy and great rejoicing, as they rejoice before you
as at the harvest, as people make merry when dividing spoils. For the yoke that burdened them, the pole on their
shoulder, and the rod of their taskmaster you have smashed, as on the day of Midian.
Responsorial Psalm PSALMS 27:1, 4, 13-14
R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.
The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear?
The LORD is my life’s refuge; of whom should I be afraid?
R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.
One thing I ask of the LORD; this I seek:
To dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life,
That I may gaze on the loveliness of the LORD and contemplate his temple.
R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.
I believe that I shall see the bounty of the LORD in the land of the living.
Wait for the LORD with courage; be stouthearted, and wait for the LORD.
R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.
Reading 2 1 CORINTHIANS 1:10-13, 17
I urge you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree in what you say, and that there
be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and in the same purpose.
For it has been reported to me about you, my brothers and sisters, by Chloe’s people, that there are rivalries among you.
I mean that each of you is saying, “I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,” or “I belong to Cephas,” or “I belong to
Christ.” Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? For Christ did not send
me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with the wisdom of human eloquence, so that the cross of Christ might
not be emptied of its meaning.
Gospel MATTHEW 4:12-23 OR 4:12-17
When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by
the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what had been said through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled:
Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sit in
darkness have seen a great light, on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death light has arisen.
From that time on, Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Mass Readings
February 2, 2020 - Feast of the Presentation of the Lord
Reading 1 MALACHI 3:1-4
Thus says the Lord GOD: Lo, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me; and suddenly there will come to
the temple the LORD whom you seek, and the messenger of the covenant whom you desire. Yes, he is coming, says the
LORD of hosts. But who will endure the day of his coming? And who can stand when he appears? For he is like the
refiner’s fire, or like the fuller’s lye. He will sit refining and purifying silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi, refining them
like gold or like silver that they may offer due sacrifice to the LORD. Then the sacrifice of Judah and Jerusalem will please
the LORD, as in the days of old, as in years gone by.
Responsorial Psalm PSALMS 24:7, 8, 9, 10
R. Who is this king of glory? It is the Lord!
Lift up, O gates, your lintels; reach up, you ancient portals, that the king of glory may come in!
Who is this king of glory? The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle.
Lift up, O gates, your lintels; reach up, you ancient portals, that the king of glory may come in!
Who is this king of glory? The LORD of hosts; he is the king of glory.
Reading 2 HEBREWS 2:14-18
Since the children share in blood and flesh, Jesus likewise shared in them, that through death he might destroy the one
who has the power of death, that is, the Devil, and free those who through fear of death had been subject to slavery all
their life. Surely he did not help angels but rather the descendants of Abraham; therefore, he had to become like his
brothers and sisters in every way, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest before God to expiate the sins of the
people. Because he himself was tested through what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.
Gospel LUKE 2:22-40 OR 2:22-32
When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, Mary and Joseph took Jesus up to
Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that opens the womb shall be
consecrated to the Lord, and to offer the sacrifice of a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons, in accordance with the
dictate in the law of the Lord.
Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the
consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not
see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought
in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying:
“Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which
you prepared in the sight of all the peoples: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.”
The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his
mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted
--and you yourself a sword will pierce-- so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”
There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived
seven years with her husband after her marriage, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple,
but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer. And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and
spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.
When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth.
The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.
