Camp Leon is Going Virtual!

While we may not be able to attend Camp Leon in-person in Huttonsville, WV this summer, we are going to

have a Virtual Camp Leon. There has been a camp every year for 54 years, and we aren't going to let a little

CV-19 stop us this year!

Plans are underway to have online activities and gatherings during the week of June 15. Details are still

being finalized, but we intend to have Zoom meetings for each of the camper groups so everyone can see and

talk to their camp friends, art projects, a virtual campfire and mass, and other online videos, activities and

events. We are looking at different platforms, but will likely use Zoom for personal gatherings, Facebook for

live events, and Flipgrid for posting of photos and videos of everyone enjoying our Virtual Camp Leon week. If

you are interested and want to be included, please send your email to [email protected]. Everyone is

welcome (even if you have never attended camp or did not sign up to attend this year)!

For Kids and Families: Standing Up to Racism

This Saturday 10:00am Join us by tuning into a new Town Hall, Coming Together: Standing Up to Racism, to help kids and families

discuss racism and the protests taking place nationwide, build empathy, and embrace diversity.

The hour-long special will be hosted by CNN commentator Van Jones and CNN anchor Erica Hill, along

with Sesame Street’s Big Bird, on Saturday, June 6 at 10 a.m. on CNN.

“What is the best way for me to continue donating funds to our parish?"

Via U.S Postal Service

Your donations by “snail mail” will be held with all of our mail at the post office until Fr. John picks it up, usually each day.

Be sure to indicate any special intentions in the memo line of your check.

Via Online Banking

Online banking, by definition, means managing your deposit accounts with a computer or mobile device. This includes

transferring funds, depositing checks and paying bills electronically. Most banks and credit unions offer this option to

their customers for a low monthly fee. When making a donation or payment this way, your bank or credit union will mail

checks to the recipients you designate. You can designate if your donation will recur regularly – if it is, it will be mailed to

us automatically on the frequency you choose. You can also note if the donation is to be used for a special purpose.

Here at Blessed Sacrament we use online banking to pay almost all of our bills. The savings in postage easily covers the

monthly fee.

(Soon) Via an “App”.

We are setting up an “app” that can be used on our web page, our Facebook page, and on your smartphone for anyone to

easily make a donation. More information will be coming soon.

Via Our Diocese (This will be available for a limited time)

Our diocese set up an online method for anyone to use and 100% of these donations will come to the parish. To use this

method, have your credit card info handy and go to the diocesan website Change in Procedure: https://dwc.org/support-

your-local-parish/

o When you click on the link a list of parishes will open up. Blessed Sacrament is near the beginning.

o When you find that line in the list, look to the far right edge of the line and click on the word "donate".

o A new screen will allow you indicate how much you wish to donate and your contact details.

Note that you can click on a box marked "recurring" if you want this same gift to continue on a regular basis without

your having to do this process repeatedly (for as long as this temporary portal exists).

o The next screen will ask for your debit/credit card info just as if you were checking out a purchase from other

websites.

o After you complete your donation process, you will receive an email receipt.

It can provide: a better understanding of what triggers your anger admission to yourself of how anger is affecting you some simple practical exercises to calm things down a little. Raymond Novaco has been studying anger for over 3 decades. He stresses the high importance of "self-examination." Join us for a talk on how to reduce anger and frustrations when times are tough. We all have dealt with so much uncertainty in the last few months. 2020 seems like one giant change after another. When this happens, we tend to respond in one of two ways: through our Inner Critic trying to push ourselves to succeed or Acceptance through self-kindness. Our discussion will be focused on self-compassion and how this can impact our work and also protect ourselves from burnout or from our own inner critics. We will practice exercises together to explore what self-compassion is, look at the neuroscience behind why it works, and then apply strategies to our work and our own lives. Facilitated by: Sarah Stanley, MSW, MA, LICSW Intended Audience: Counselors, Social Workers, Other Helping Professionals, anyone who wants to learn more about self-compassion and acceptance Contact Hours Earned: 3 Contact Hours (SW, LPC, RN, NAADAC) Cost to Attend: $40 per person Location: Online Date: Thursday, June 18 Time: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Registrants will be provided with zoom meeting instructions prior to the start of the event. Next Sunday's Mass Readings – June 14, 2020 Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ

Reading 1 Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 14B-16A

Moses said to the people:

"Remember how for forty years now the LORD, your God, has directed all your journeying in the desert,

so as to test you by affliction and find out whether or not it was your intention to keep his commandments.

He therefore let you be afflicted with hunger, and then fed you with manna, a food unknown to you and your fathers,

in order to show you that not by bread alone does one live, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of the

LORD. "Do not forget the LORD, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery; who guided

you through the vast and terrible desert with its seraph serpents and scorpions, its parched and waterless ground;

who brought forth water for you from the flinty rock and fed you in the desert with manna, a food unknown to your

fathers."

Responsorial Psalm Psalms 147:12-13, 14-15, 19-20

R. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem.

Glorify the LORD, O Jerusalem; praise your God, O Zion.

For he has strengthened the bars of your gates; he has blessed your children within you.

R. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem.

He has granted peace in your borders; with the best of wheat he fills you.

He sends forth his command to the earth; swiftly runs his word!

R. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem.

He has proclaimed his word to Jacob, his statutes and his ordinances to Israel.

He has not done thus for any other nation; his ordinances he has not made known to them. Alleluia.

R. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem.

Reading 2 1 Corinthians 10:16-17

Brothers and sisters:

The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ?

The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?

Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.

Gospel John 6:51-58

Jesus said to the Jewish crowds:

"I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever;

and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world."

The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"

Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood,

you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life,

and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks

my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the

one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors

who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever."

PASTOR'S PAGES

As a contribution to a dialogue about racism in our country, I share, with the author's permission, this message that I received this week

from an African-American Catholic Woman who is not a member of our parish. I wish I wasn’t Catholic. I feel my Protestant black friends not only have the comfort of their pastor who is fighting the same fight because he’s black also, but that the congregation is too. Or I wish that I was back in Chicago with a white Catholic priest with the heart and mind of Father Pfleger to whom I could turn to and who understands. I feel socially distanced in my faith. Lord knows I think the world of my pastor. I turn to him for solace because what happened to George Floyd HURTS, because of the bull crap from the micro aggressions that we have to deal with on a regular basis because of our color, and because the needless loss of life has worn us out and we’re tired of it! By the grace of God I’m still alive behind a deputy with his hand on his firearm while his partner leans up against the wall and looks down at the floor. Right here in Charleston, several years ago, my pastor felt that telling me to stop looking at the news and getting off of Facebook was the answer. I told him, "Padre, turning off the news and Facebook is the easy part but I can’t turn off my skin!!! In a non-Catholic Church the preacher would listen and relate to you and even pray with you. Heck I went to church with my girlfriend one Sunday in Georgia, they sent a card in the mail this year inviting me back and just saying hello. We don’t do that. Bless his heart, my Padre was honest when he said he’s not a black man so he can’t understand. I said it starts with a dialogue, and you don’t have to be black to do that. All we want is what we paid the price for: from building this country and making it rich without recompense, to fighting in every war – but most of all, because the life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is supposed to be for everybody and the color of our skin should not be a death sentence or an exception to the rule. My pastor doesn’t get it. The majority of those in my parish don’t get it. A few might and I believe you do. Rather than allow myself to feel so cut off and isolated, (and this Pandemic isn’t making it any easier!), I’m writing to you. And it doesn’t help me to deal with what has happened that my youngest child is retired military and a police officer in another state. I worry about her safety. Again: alone, suffer in silence. No warm hugs and "I’m there with you sister! Let’s pray and ask God....." It’s cold and lonely being a fly in buttermilk. If you would like to respond to this woman's message, please email to me at [email protected].

thanks to Margie Johnson and Mary Ann Johnson for passing this along:

A DIFFICULT CONVERSATION by Jon Gordon

I've worked to help numerous leaders and teams become stronger together. A key part of my process and framework includes difficult conversations teams need to have in order to bring issues to the light, resolve conflict, become connected and committed and find a way forward together. I personally know the benefit of difficult conversations. My wife came to me early in our marriage when I was 31 and told me if I didn't change, she was going to leave me. I listened, I changed and became a better man, husband and father. If you read The Energy Bus, George was based on me. Seeing how divided our country is right now, it's clear we need to have a difficult conversation about race in America. Instead of being separate teams we need to become one team. It starts by listening to and understanding those who are frustrated and hurting. This is not just about George Floyd's death. This is about hundreds of years of slavery, systemic racism, prejudice, and inequality in our country that are still very much with us and felt by African Americans daily. My friend, and head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers, Doc Rivers, has been called countless racial slurs throughout his life. He has been pulled over by the police numerous times for no reason and even had his house burned down. My friend and former Georgia football star Rennie Curran told me how the night before a speaking engagement to an elementary school he was pulled over and had his car searched for no reason. If it happens to college and professional athletes and coaches, imagine how often it happens to other African Americans. My friend Quentin Williams, who is a former FBI agent and Federal prosecutor, teaches black NBA players a three-step process of what to do when they get pulled over by the police. The fact that there is a need for this type of training should tell us something. My friend Emmanuel Acho, who I've known since his playing days at the University of Texas and is now an ESPN analyst, told me that African American parents have to have the "talk" with their kids about what it means to be black in America. "You don't get the benefit of the doubt," he said. "In fact, you have to be extra careful so you won't be accused of something you didn't do." Emmanuel told me that whether he's in an elevator, walking down an empty street or getting out of his car in a white friend's neighborhood being black is always in the back of his mind. He must always intentionally make sure that other people know he's not a threat because they look at him like he is. I've never walked in his shoes or lived in his skin so I can't possibly feel and fathom what it must feel like but by listening to Emmanuel, Doc, Rennie, Quentin, Derwin Gray and other friends I can feel the heaviness in their heart, understand their struggle, hear the frustration behind their words, see the tears that flow when they talk and learn and grow from our conversations. We can all grow if we listen. Please know that this is not an attack on police officers. My dad was a NYC police officer. You can honor the overwhelming majority of police officers who selflessly risk their lives each day to protect us and also condemn bad cops who commit evil acts. You can also work to create social justice. It's not either or. You can do all three. This is about being honest and real about our country's flaws so we can get better. This is about addressing the years of prejudice, racism and inequality in our country that still exists today. Let's not hide from it. Ignoring it will not make it go away. Admitting there is a problem, talking abut it, healing it and growing from it is how we all get better.

Page 14: Blessed Sacrament Parish June 7, 2020 · Karol Dunford, Joe Eisel, Janine Estep, Marietta Fenton, Rose Finch, Patty Geissinger, Joe Gregg, Kathleen Groom, ... There has been a camp

Quentin Williams and his organization DedicationtoCommunity.org, in addition to helping athletes, also trains police departments how to engage and work with communities while also helping communities work with the police. He brings police departments and communities together to become one team and his program is a model that should be implemented throughout the country. As a society we must create policies and implement solutions that address these systemic issues. Head start programs are a must. Community gardens in inner cities would provide the fruits, vegetables and nourishment for enhanced health and immune systems. We need to spend a lot more on early education programs than we do on prisons. We must work with families who are struggling and must enact criminal justice reform. Currently a small crime puts you into the system and once you are in the system it's hard to get out. This has led to a mass incarceration of African American men who make up a large majority of the prison system. If you want to learn more about this, I encourage you to watch the 13th documentary on Netflix. It was eye opening for me. I want to be transparent and tell that this was hard for me to write. It would be a lot easier for me to talk about organizational issues rather than societal issues and not tackle this subject. But then I wouldn't be living up to the leadership books I write. If I can help teams and organizations, I have an obligation to share what I've learned that will hopefully help others have difficult conversations and help our country. As I write this protests and riots are happening in cities around the country. I know some may want to direct their anger at me for bringing this subject to the light. But let's not take the bait of hate. Let's not let bitterness take root. The truth is you can be pro law enforcement, believe in the right to protest peacefully while also condemning the rioting, looting and violence that is happening. Again, it's not either or. You can do all three. I support the police. I support social justice initiatives. I support conversations and solutions that will make us all better. I condemn violence of any kind. If you disagree with any of this let's talk about it and learn and grow together. Only by having difficult conversations will we become one team working together to create a better future. -Jon P.S., The difficult conversations teaching that I share with teams is from my book The Power of a Positive Team.
