Христос Раждається! Christ is Born!

Dear Parishioners,

As we begin this new year of 2019, many of us may have made a “New Year’s Resolution”. Regardless of the specifics of these good intentions, the end goal is improvement.

It is interesting to note that within the word, “resolution”, one can find the word “solution”. Knowing this, one could say that in every “resolution” there is a “solution”. It is good to keep in mind that the word “solution” has several meanings. It could certainly be an answer to a problem. In the scientific world, a “solution” could be a “mixture”, a “blend” of different components that results in something new.

Humanly speaking, from time to time, some solutions may be very difficult to achieve, especially if we try to do it on our own. Keeping this in mind, should help us to remember that when God “mixes” with us, a ‘solution’ will always be found.

Our parish renewal program, Awaken, could be described as “resolutions” looking for “solutions”. The data that has been gathered by way of our parish survey and from the special parish meeting that was held on October 21, and a second meeting which involved catechism teachers and parents on November 4, contain many good ideas, suggestions, and hopes. From this data, “resolutions”, we must proceed to “solutions.”

The information (“resolutions”) gathered have been compiled into the following 5 Strategic Priorities.

ENGAGING FAMILIES, YOUTH AND CHILDREN How/what can we do for kids, youth, young adults and young families?

OUTREACH AND COMMUNITY Includes evangelization and social justice

BUILDING THE PARISH COMMUNITY How can we educate and inform parishioners of the church operations?

MAKING PEOPLE FEEL AT HOME Making the parish a welcome place for all

IMPROVING COMMUNICATION IN OUR PARISH What can we do to improve communication with parishioners?

What is the next step? Five task committees, one for each of the above mentioned strategic priorities must be formed. This is where the “mixture” of parishioners can help move the process from “resolution” to “solution”. If you are interested in being part of any of the task committees, please email the parish office, [email protected]. In the subject line, please write AWAKEN. In the near future there will be a joint meeting of all the task committees. As we proceed with AWAKEN, please keep our parish of St. Joseph’s in your prayers.

Peace and Prayers,

Fr. Dmytro

“At your baptism in the Jordan, O Lord, worship of the Trinity was revealed, for the Father’s voice bore witness to You, calling You His beloved Son, and the Spirit in the form of a dove, confirmed the truth of these words. O Christ, our

God, who appeared and enlightened the world, glory be to You!” (Tropar of Theophany / Baptism of the Lord)

The Lord “reveals” Himself; He appears unto us. That’s what He does, on this great feast of Theophany celebrated today. He doesn’t hide Himself from us, but exposes Himself, immersing Himself into, and giving His light and “enlightenment” to, the “waters” of our world in the river Jordan. Let us not hide ourselves from Him either, today, but come to Him in honesty, in some heartfelt prayer. Let me respond to His openness to us, and to His readiness to immerse Himself in all the “waters” of our lives, opening our hearts to His enlightening presence, and letting ourselves be immersed in it. Thank You, Lord, for sanctifying, again and again, all our “waters,” which we tend to pollute and muddy with our human shortcomings. “God is the Lord, and has appeared unto us. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

Baptism of Our Lord

At the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan, the public ministry of the Saviour begins. John the Baptist points to Christ in the Jordan and identifies Him as the “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). During the baptism of Jesus, the Most Holy Trinity is made known: “Worship of the Trinity was revealed; the voice of the Father bore witness to You, naming you the beloved Son, and the Spirit in the form of a dove confirmed the word’s certainty.” “The voice of the Father” is the voice of the Heavenly Father, and the “Spirit in the form of a dove” is the Holy Spirit, who descends upon Christ, revealing him to be the Son of God. For this reason, Church tradition refers to the Baptism of Jesus Christ as the Theophany (from the Greek, meaning divine appearance).
