My dear parishioners, Merry Christmas! Back in the year 2000, I led a pil‐grimage to the Holy Land from my first assignment. I was only a priest for a little more than a year. When I first arrived to meet my pastor, after we had spoken for a while, he asked me if I had anything else to say. I asked him if I could lead a pilgrimage to the Holy Land the next year for the Jubi‐lee Year 2000, remembering the birth of Jesus Christ two thousand years before. As he tells it “How could I say no to a newly ordained priest about something like that?” I led a small group of twenty; my mother was one of the pilgrims. When we went, it was a bit of a scary time. There had been peace for most of the year, but violence had picked up. Even the day we were supposed to leave I was torn with the deci‐sion to cancel the trip. I decided to go, but we did change a lot of our itinerary to avoid the violence. Oddly enough, the situation worked out to our advantage. There were very few other pilgrimage groups there at the time. The lines were short wherever we went; the vendors were looking to sell what they could, so we got a great many of deals, etc. One day we traveled to Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus. We celebrated Mass in Shepherd’s Field in a cave similar to one where Jesus would have been born. The Mass we celebrated was the Mass of Christmas. In the Holy Land, you are permitted to celebrate the Mass that is appropriate to the place, i.e. at the tomb of Jesus, you can celebrate Easter Mass., on Mount Tabor you celebrate the Mass of the Transfiguration, etc. Then we went to the Basilica of the Na‐tivity to visit the place where we believe Jesus was actually born. Our tour guide told me “Father, if you had been here in August, you would have had to wait two hours to get in‐side.” When we arrived there was no line and we walked inside. We had to climb down the steps to reach the place where Jesus was born. Each pilgrim is allowed to venerate the spot where Jesus was born, either by touching it or kiss‐ing it. Usually you have to leave right after that. Since there were no other pilgrims, we spent a half‐hour down there, as I read the Scripture of the birth of Jesus aloud. It was a blessed time, to be allowed to remain there, at the place where the Incarnation took place. Quite a few of the pil‐grims shed tears as they meditated on the love of God, who took on human flesh to be like us in all things but sin, a God who does not want to lose us, but to keep us close. Seven‐teen years later, I can still remember the joy of celebrating Christmas on an October afternoon in Bethlehem. One of the great things about our faith though is that we do not have to be there to celebrate or know the love of our God. We experience that abundantly each time we celebrate Mass. Let us remember and cling to the love of God, so that the spirit of Christmas remains in us each day. God bless,

Mis queridos feligreses, ¡Feliz Navidad! En el año 2000, en mi primera asig‐nación, yo guie una peregrinación a Tierra Santa. Yo era sa‐cerdote por poco menos de un año. Cuando llegué por prime‐ra vez a reunirme con mi párroco, después de hablar un rato, el me preguntó si tenía algo más que decir. Yo le pregunté si podría guiar una peregrinación a Tierra Santa el próximo año para el jubileo del Año 2000, recordando el nacimiento de Jesucristo dos mil años antes. Como el lo dice “¿Como podía decir que no a algo así, a un sacerdote recién ordenado?” Yo guie a un pequeño grupo de veinte personas, mi madre siendo una de los peregrinos. Cuando nosotros fuimos era un tiempo un poco miedoso. Habían tenido paz por la mayor parte del año, pero la violencia estaba aumentando. Inclusive el día en que teníamos que viajar, estaba indeciso acerca de cancelar el viaje o no. Decidí ir, pero cambiamos bastante de nuestro itinerario para evitar la violencia. Curiosamente, la situación trabajó para nuestra conveniencia. Había muy pocos grupos de peregrinos allá en ese tiempo. Las líneas eran cortas don‐dequiera que íbamos; los vendedores buscaban vender lo que podían, así que obtuvimos grandes rebajas, etc. Un día viajamos a Belén, el lugar donde nació Jesús. Celebramos Misa en el Campo de los Pastores en una cueva similar a la que probablemente nació Jesús. La Misa que celebramos fue la Misa de Navidad. En Tierra Santa, uno está permitido celebrar la Misa apropiada del lugar, por ejem‐plo, en la tumba de Jesús , uno puede celebrar la Misa de Re‐surrección, en Monte Tabor, uno puede celebrar la Misa de la Transfiguración, etc. Después fuimos a la Basílica de la Nativi‐dad a visitar el lugar donde creemos que Jesús verdadera‐mente nació. Nuestro guía me dijo “Padre, si hubiera estado aquí en agosto, hubieras esperado dos horas para entrar.” Cuando llegamos no había línea y nosotros entramos ensegui‐da. Bajamos los escalones para llegar al lugar donde Jesús nació. A cada peregrino se le permite venerar el lugar donde Jesús nació, ya sea tocando o besándolo. Usualmente uno debe irse enseguida, pero como no había más peregrinos, pasamos allí media hora, en lo que yo leía la Escritura acerca del nacimiento de Jesús en alta voz. Fue un tiempo muy ben‐decido, permitírsenos quedarnos allí, en el lugar donde la En‐carnación ocurrió. Bastante de los peregrinos lloraron al medi‐tar en el amor de Dios, quien se hizo carne, para ser como nosotros en todo menos en el pecado, un Dios que no quiere perdernos, sino mantenernos cerca. Diecisiete años después, yo todavía puedo recordar la alegría de celebrar Navidad en una tarde de octubre en Belén. Una gran cosa de nuestra fe, es que no tenemos que estar allá para celebrar o saber del amor de nuestro Dios. Nosotros podemos experimentar eso abundantemente cada vez que celebramos la Misa. Recorde‐mos y apeguémonos al amor de Dios, para que el espíritu de la Navidad se quede en nosotros todos los días. Que Dios les bendiga,
